CD Dream Catcher |

Recycled Items 2 CDs Beads
Supplies Yarn - approximately 144" (we recommend 24" to 36" continuous lengths) Needle (we used plastic canvas needles as they had large eyes and dull points) Scotch Tape Hot Glue Gun Scissors
Drill Drill Bit (bit size will depend on your needle eye) Safety Glasses Scrap of wood
NOTE: An adult should drill the holes in the cd. It is extremely dangerous for a child to do this! We placed a block of scrap wood under the cd when drilling for stability. We wore safety glasses. Apply gentle pressure while drilling; too much pressure will crack or shatter the cd.
You may need to try different drill bits when first drilling holes to ensure there is enough room for the needle's eye to pass through easily. We drilled one hole at a time and then tried to pass our plastic canvas needle through it until we found the right size drill bit.
When sewing, you may pass through the same hole additional times.
Directions |
1) Use the picture to the left as a guide to drill holes in one of the cds shiny side up. There will be eight holes in the outer ring (black X), then eight holes in the middle ring (red X) centered between the black Xs, and eight holes in the blue inner ring centered between the red Xs.
2) Thread the needle.
3) Hold the cd with holes shiny side up. From the underside of the cd, thread the needle through one of the holes in the outer ring. Secure the end of the yarn to the non-shiny side of the cd with a small piece of Scotch tape. Be careful not to cover up any of the other holes. NOTE: We found taping the end was easier as knots may "pop through" the holes if pulled forcefully.
4) Use a basic running stitch to sew around the outer ring. The running stitch will cause you to "skip" sections as you go around the cd (pink arrows on picture to the left, pink circle is starting point)- when you get back to where you started (pink circle) - simply reverse direction (blue arrows on picture to the left).
5) Repeat Step 4 around both the middle and inner rings. NOTE: If you start to run out of yarn, simply tie another piece of yarn to the strand you have and keep sewing. You can also tape off the end on the non-shiny side, trim any excess, and start again with another strand of yarn.
6) Continue to use a basic running stitch to "zig zag" between the outer and middle rings. The "zig zag" will still "skip" sections as you go around the cd (pink arrows on picture to the left, pink circle is starting point) - when you get back to where you started (pink circle) - simply reverse direction (blue arrows on picture to the left).
7) Repeat Step 6 to "zig zag" around the middle and inner rings and the inner ring and the center hole of the cd.
8) Tape off the end of the yarn on the non-shiny side and trim any excess.
9) Lay the cd in front of you non-shiny side up. String a 10" or 12" length of yarn behind one of your stitches at the top of the cd. Bring together both ends to form a "u" (blue u on picture to the left). This will be the dream catcher's hanger. String desired number of pony beads onto both ends of the yarn. Knot the yarn ends together leaving a small length that can be frayed. Fray the ends.
10) Tie two different lengths of yarn to two separate stitches (blue circles/lines on picture above) at the bottom of your cd. String desired number of pony beads on each strand of yarn. We placed knots at different lengths when stringing beads to keep them from bunching at the bottom. Knot each yarn end leaving a small length that can be frayed. Fray the ends.
11) Apply hot glue to the non-shiny side of the other cd. Glue it to the non-shiny side of the cd with holes. This will "hide" the taped and/or knotted yarn so the dream catcher can be hung anywhere!
