I bought my jeep in November of '98, not fully realizing the full concept of four wheeling and just how much money I'd be spending on modifications. I don't think it ever entered my mind at the time that I'd be modifying the suspension, tweaking with pinion angles, tearing out ring gears and buying a whole mess of spare parts to replace the ramifications of such modifications.
The first thing I did for the jeep was to scrap the gruesome Thornbirds that were on it when I bought it. It only took me about 2 months to figure out what crap they were (well, it took me more like 2 days. The two months was saving money to do something about it). I went to BFG AT's - a safe bet since the jeep was a daily driver. I tooled around the trails with those and a shackle lift, learning how to 'wheel in a basically stock jeep.
February of 2000 came around and I was finally able to throw a lockright in the front diff. Gotta have gription! Well, to compliment that new found traction I needed some meat on the wheels, time to make her taller too! So in March I canned the lift shackles (actually, we torched the suckers), sprung her over (with the generous help of some cool friends - thank you Kash, Jason, and many others), and threw on some 33x12.5x15 Yokohama Geolandar MT's. God, I love my jeep now!
I've also done some other minor modifications to it since the more major transformation, like fabricating a rear bumper with tow points, throwing on some swaybar disconnects, adding leafs to the rear packs, lengthening the rear driveline (after adding the leafs to the rear I learned the hard way that the driveline was too short - sucked) and threw on a Flowmaster.
There are many more modifications to go, I need to put in a CV driveline with SYE, lower gear ratios, find a winch, lock up the rear, and so on and so on ..... So many mods, so low on funds! |

Small update: Thanks to Paul and Darren from Randy's Ring and Pinion, I now have a new powertrax no-slip in the rear diff. We put that in on 9-30-00. Then in October I ditched the nerfbars and fabbed up some rockin' rocker panel protection out of 1/4" thick angle iron. Thanks to Travis for the help! Go ahead and check out the writeups for those (they'll be up soon, have a little patience).
11/00 - another update: Well after only a month, the no-slip crapped out (on the streets). So in went the spider gears again while the unit goes back to Powertrax. Hey, I was a guinnea pig for Randy's. These things happen! She'll be locked up again here soon.
12/23/00 - I installed another no-slip today, went wheelin' with some crazy folk. Love being fully locked! Finally got a chance to test out the rocker protection. It rocks! |
