A HAT-TRICK FOR JAMIE
(04/05/08) It took extra-time to seperate the teams as the Under 17s ran out 4-3 winners aganst Amlwch yesterday to go through to the final of the Bobby Hughes Memorial Shield where they will now meet Holyhead Peibio at Cemaes Bay next Friday, 9th May. The game had ended 2-2 at the end of normal time but a hat-trick from Jamie Aston and a further strike from Scott Hughes was enough to see Glan through to a second final.
WEEKEND TOURNAMENTS
(02/05/08) The Ospreys are at the Llangefni Tournament 2pm on Saturday 3rd April and the Red Dragons are at the Pen-Y-Groes Tournament on Sunday 4th April.
UNDER 17s THROUGH TO FINAL
(30/04/08) Glantraeth Under 17s raced into a three goal lead this evening against Felinheli in the semi-final of the R.S.Gardner Cup with goals from Matti Jones (2) and Kyle Liggins only for the visitors to stage a tremendous comeback to draw level. However, second half goals from Scott Hughes and Jamie Aston saw the lads win 5-3 and go through to the final on Friday 23rd May when they will meet Amlwch, Bontnewydd or Holyhead Peibio. Venue to be confirmed.
CAERNARFON TOURNAMENT
(28/04/08) The Ospreys and the Red Dragons reached the semi-finals of the Caernarfon Wanderers Tournament on Sunday both finishing in fourth place in their group against strong opposition, the Dragons only losing to a last minute goal against Caernarfon. Two Under 9s teams entered, winning some games and enjoying themselves but failing to reach the final stages.
17s THROUGH TO 2ND SEMI-FINAL
(27/04/08) Goals from Scott Hughes (2), Ben Hull, Sean Davies, Jason Edwards & Kyle Liggins gave the Under 17s a 6-2 win at Cae Glyn Caernarfon on Saturday to go through to the semi-finals of the Bobby Hughes Memorial Shield. That's an incredible 25 goals scored in the last four games by the lads! They now meet Amlwch at Cae Cob next Saturday morning. In the semi-final of the R.S.Gardner Cup the 17s are at home to Felinheli this Wednesday evening.
JUNIORS REVIEW
(23/04/08) The Red Dragons had a creditable 1-1 draw at Amlwch last weekend with Ryan the scorer. The game was played in a strong wind making it literally a game of two halves. Both the Dragons and the Ospreys travel to Caernarfon Wanderers next Sunday, 27th April, to take part in a friendly tournament. The tournament starts at 9.15 am. Instructions on how to get to Cae Top, Caernarfon can be found on their web site at www.caernarfonwanderers.co.uk
The Under 17s are away to Cae Glyn Caernarfon on Saturday in a quarter final of the Bobby Hughes Memorial Shield. The winners will be at home to Amlwch in the semi-final on Saturday 3rd May. Finally, best wishes to treasurer Karen Evans who was taken ill on holiday in Tenerife but is hopefully now on the road to a full recovery. Also get well soon to Geraint who manages the Under 17s with Mike.
BACK ONLINE...FOR NOW
(21/04/08) I have put the Juniors web pages back online for now and will do a weekly round-up of any news supplied to me, without pictures, until the Glantraeth Tournament in July when I will make a decision whether to close the site for good. One of the reasons for going back online is to flag the apology printed below proving I dont always get everything 100% right. There is a league committee meeting tonight and at least one league official has been in touch and expressed disappointment about the site being suspended. I have explained my reasons to him and he might bring the subject up for discussion. The league need to formulate a clear policy as to whether the photographing of games in the Anglesey Junior League is permissible or not and, if necessary, publish some sensible guidelines. I can no longer accept a situation where the league general secretary is quizzing Robin about me taking photographs when I am stood just twenty yards away, making me feel as if I am engaged in some kind of criminal activity. When my wife heard she wanted me to stop doing the site for good and I can understand her point of view but I am reluctant to do that as I feel it has been good for the club AND good for the league. (SS)
APOLOGY
(20/04/08) In my report of the Glantraeth Under 17s v Llanfair Scarlets game on 5th April I perhaps made too much of the decision to award a penalty to Glantraeth in a way that came over as being critical of the young referee who was controlling the game. The comments obviously caused offence and on second reading my comments I can understand why. I am only too happy to retract those comments and apologise as in no way do I want to be responsible for deterring a promising young referee from continuing his career in the game. I would just add that a couple of weeks previously I had said about the same referee that 'the game was well controlled by a young referee who looks destined for higher things.' (SS)
JUNIORS WEEKLY ROUND-UP
(17/04/08) Glantraeth Under 11 Red Dragons had a tremendous tussle with Menai Bridge Tigers on Monday evening in Malltraeth before finishing up 2-1 winners, the winning goal coming from Jack after great work from Ryan and Jamie. Jamie was the other scorer. The Under 9s had a stunning 7-0 win at Trearddur Bay on Tuesday night. The Bay are a useful side but on the night our boys were magnificent. Tonight the Under 17s completed their season as runners-up with a 7-0 win at Llanfair Scarlets. On target were Matti Jones (4), Sean Davies, Scott Hughes & Kyle Liggins. Well done guys, some great results there.
GREAT GOAL WINS IT
(15/04/08) The Red Dragons won a close game with Menai Bridge Tigers by two goals to one and as on Saturday they started slowly with the Tigers taking an early lead. The Dragons were soon back on terms through a well struck shot from Jamie but had a couple of let-offs as Jack cleared off the line then a post came to their rescue. The Dragons' second goal towards the end of the first half was worthy of winning any game, started with a defence splitting pass from Ryan that sent Jamie away down the right and his perfectly delivered cross was nicely finished by Jack. The second period was goalless with Iwan going closest for Glantraeth with a header that was just over.
NEW DATE FOR CAE GLYN GAME
(15/04/08) Last weekend's postponed Under 17 fixture at Cae Glyn has NOW BEEN REARRANGED FOR SATURDAY 26th APRIL. The semi-final of the R.S.Garner Cup will see the 17s at home to Felinheli on Wednesday 30th April. In their final league game the Under 13s went down 6-0 to Llangoed last night, a much better performance by the boys against a team from the higher reaches of the division.
THANX TO 'JINX'
(14/04/08) Robin has asked me to pass on thanks to 'Jinx' of Holyhead who had the 20 winning ticket at a recent Dragon's game and insisted on donating the money back to the club. Although we don't know his real name we would like to thank 'Jinx' for his generous gesture (SS).
GOOD RUNOUT FOR DRAGONS
(13/04/08) The Red Dragons travelled to Llandegfan today for a friendly fixture and found themselves 2-0 down at half-time. However, the boys got their passing game going after the break and ran out 5-3 winners. Ryan got three with Dion and Jake also on target. With three regulars missing it was a good result with Osian coming in and contributing towards an impressive team performance.
LATE WINNER DENIES JUNIORS
(13/04/08) A goal five minutes from time gave Amlwch a 1-0 victory this morning at Cae Cob over the Under 9 Juniors. The youngsters defended well and Dafydd rated it as amongst their best performances of the season. In another Under 9s game the Colts lost to Llanfairpwll.
UPDATED DRAGONS FIXTURES
(09/04/08) Next Sunday, 13th April, the Dragons are away to Llandegfan Leopards in a friendly, kick-off 10:30 am. The following Tuesday, 15th April, they are at home to Menai Bridge Tigers in a league match, kick-off 6.15 pm, and on Saturday 19th April the boys travel to Amlwch for their final league game. That one kicks-off at 11.30 am. Bob is also hoping to arrange a further two games with Trearddur Bay and Cemaes Bay before the tournaments start.
17s MOVE A STEP CLOSER
(08/04/08) Last night's result in the Under 17's League saw third placed Felinheli lose 4-2 to Cae Glyn Caernarfon which means that if Glantraeth win their final league game at Llanfair Scarlets they will finish runners-up. Following Saturday's win over Llanfair in the RS Gardner Cup Glantraeth will now be at home to Felinheli in the semi-final. Next Saturday the lads are away to Cae Glyn in the Bobby Hughes Memorial Trophy with the winners meeting Amlwch or Penrhosgarnedd.
DAVE TELLS IT AS IT IS
(05/04/08) I am afraid it was the same old story for the Ospreys. After another dominant display it pains me to have to describe yet another negative score line. The bottom line is we lost 0-2. The Ospreys should have won easily despite missing 3 players. We had at least 4 times as many opportunities as Valley to score but we failed to convert point blank chances at one end and let in 2 'cheap' goals the other. Although we were the force we were not beyond critic. On a negative note we tended to wait for the ball to reach the opposition when more alert anticipation was needed. Stepping in first, tackling and intercepting the ball should now be second nature. Al and Gwern did this well, Colin at times. All balls in the air should be dealt with! A couple of players were off the pace all through the match, and concentration and general reading of play was low by some. Have we forgotten that if we put the ball in the back of the opponents net we can score a goal too?! We appear to do the difficult and challenging things well and mess up doing simple things in vital places. Some players are living off the speed, fitness and ability of others, although they are capable of good football themselves at times. If they can't catch people and run past players they will become virtual spectators. This last league game is the water shed. No more free rides, it is sink or swim now preparing for the summer tournaments. No train, No fitness, No play! All we have to offer now is sweat and toil in order to prepare for the remainder of this year and next. Parents and players must make their child available for all training sessions otherwise they will simply not get on the team sheet. On a positive, immediately before the final whistle, I saw the Ospreys string together a 7 pass move from one end to the other. This move twice involved Guto, cutting the opposition into pieces. This resulted in a chance on goal for Sion. More of that please! Surely it is just a matter of time before some body is on the receiving end of an avalanche of goals. Gwern worked hard and was like 'steve G' . Al 'the rock' was superb. Dan gave it everything as did most of the team most of the time. Sorry to be ultra picky but you'll get the praise when the score line improves. Thanks for the loyalty and to every body for helping me and Cliff this year and lets try and do some thing!!
PENALTY SWINGS IT FOR 17s
(05/04/08) A penalty midway through the second period swung this game in Glantraeth Under 17's favour in an evenly balanced cup tie in which visitors Llanfair Scarlets had given a good account of themselves. After a good early save from Paul Evans the first half was pretty devoid of goalmouth incident with both keepers virtually spectators. The second period was little different until a spot kick was awarded for a challenge on Bryn Jones and Sean Davies converted the penalty to break the deadlock and put Glantraeth ahead (picture above). Four minutes from time Carl Edwards (pictured left) swept the ball home first time from a Matti Jones' corner kick for an excellent strike to confirm a semi-final place for the home side. Photos now online.
JAMIE AT OLDHAM ATHLETIC
(04/04/08) Glantraeth Under 17's left sided midfielder Jamie Aston will miss tomorrow's cup tie with Llanfair Scarlets as he returns to Oldham Athletic on trial. We wish Jamie all the best as he attempts to follow in the footsteps of Kenleigh Owen of Holyhead who was on trial at Oldham two years ago and was then awarded a contract with the Lancashire club.
SUNDAY TRAINING FOR DRAGONS
(04/04/08) Bob reports that there is no game for the Dragons again this weekend but there will be a training session at Cae Cob on Sunday at 11.00 am.
17s GO FOR SEMI-FINAL PLACE
(04/04/08) Weekend fixtures include the Under 17s at home to Llanfair Scarlets on Saturday in a quarter-final of the R.S. Gardner Cup, kick-off 9.30 am at Cae Cob. The Ospreys are also at home on Saturday for their final league game of the season with Valley the visitors although they will be without Dion and Jonathan who are unavailable. Kick-off for this game is 12.30 pm. The Under 13s are away to Llanfair Swifts.
ENTRY FORMS NOW AVAILABLE
(03/04/08) Entries are now being accepted for the Glantraeth Juniors 7-a-side Tournament that will be held at Glantraeth Juniors' own ground at Cae Cob, Malltraeth, Anglesey on Saturday 5th July & Sunday 6th July. GOOD DISPLAY...BAD RESULT
(02/04/08) Dave reports on Bro Benllech 3 Ospreys 0: We asked for no quarter and were given no quarter as the Ospreys met a 'beefed up' Bro Benllech team. I can honestly say for 2 thirds of this game the Ospreys were the dominant force. The first half belonged to the Ospreys but we were simply not able to get on the score sheet. Good football was being displayed by all. Victory would go to whoever scored first. In the final quarter Bro Bellech broke the dead lock with a dipping shot or cross from the left which looped into the net. The Ospreys' replied mounting several attacks. The best was after some brilliant passing down the left when a good opportunity fell to Marcus. His shot was on target but there wasn't enough venom in it to trouble the goal keeper. Ospreys had other opportunities which fell to others who experienced similar difficulty. In a final effort to level the scores we gambled and pushed three up in attack. Unfortunately this also left us short at the back and we leaked two more goals. This game was another example of failing to convert a good display into a result. I cannot fault the effort, commitment and ability shown by all the players tonight in an excellent display of football. This bodes well for the future. We played really well against a good team, shame about the score.
PROGRAMME ADVERTS
(02/04/08) Glantraeth Juniors' secretary Robin Griffiths has sent out a bilingual letter requesting programme adverts for the Juniors' tournament in July:- Dear Sir/Madam, It is the intention of Glantraeth Juniors Football Club to organize a 7-a-side football tournament for children under 9, 11 and 13 years of age. The tournament to be played on July 5/6 , 2008. We intend to produce a programme for the tournament and we are looking for sponsors to advertise in the programme. For a small fee of 10, 20 or 30 we can advertise your business and we in return can purchase match balls for the games. If you have an interest please send a cheque made payable to Glantraeth Juniors with a business card or ready made advert. Teams from all over North Wales will visit therefore it is a good opportunity to put your business and Anglesey on the map. I thank you beforehand for your support and co-operation in this matter. Yours sincerely, R.Griffiths, Hafod Yr Eithin, Penlon, Newborough, Anglesey LL61 6RS.
JUNIORS NEWS
(31/03/08) The Glantraeth Tournament is now planned to be played over the weekend of 5th/6th July with the Under 9s and Under 13s on the Saturday and the Under 11s on the Sunday. Robin expects to have rules and entry forms available shortly. Last week's Junior League meeting voted in favour of a change of age groups next season to U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s. It is planned to also have a youth league although the format and who will administer it have yet to be sorted. The Ospreys game at Bro Benllech Moelfre yesterday was postponed and has now been arranged for this Wednesday on Moelfre School pitch (6.00 pm). A game has also been arranged for this Saturday at home to Valley, kick-off 12.30 pm. The Under 13s have a game away to Trearddur Bay tomorrow (Tuesday). At the request of Huw here are some more Photos of the 10-1 hammering of Llangefni by the under 17s.
GLANTRAETH...10 LLANGEFNI...1
(29/03/08) Stan reports: Despite the atrocious conditions the Under 17s turned on a masterful display this morning at Cae Cob to go through to the quarter-finals of the R.S.Gardner Cup, annihilating Llangefni by ten goals to one. Huw Williams opened the scoring after 11 minutes scoring from close range after hesitation in the visitor's defence. A left foot cross from Dion James fell for Jamie Aston five minutes later and although his shot came back off the crossbar Ben Hull followed up to head home. On 27 minutes Sean Davies swept the ball home from a right wing corner kick and three minutes later Matti Jones scored a fourth with a nice turn and shot after the ball had been played forward by Ben Hull. The same player almost completed a hat-trick in three minutes as he added another then fired inches wide straight from the kick-off. Shellshocked Cefni were wanting the game abandoned and although the wind and rain was a bit special the referee quite rightly elected to play on. The half-time interval saw keeper Paul Evans unable to continue so he moved to an outfield role with Scott Hughes taking over between the sticks. Two minutes into the second period Sean Davies fired in a tremendous shot from 25 yards to make it 6-0 and the massacre continued with a goal from Jamie Aston five minutes later. If things couldn't get any worse for the visitors, they did, as a ball into the area from Kyle Liggins was deflected into goal off a Cefni defender. The visiting side gained a consolation goal from Douggie Fowlie with 14 minutes played as he met a corner kick from the left but normal service was soon resumed as a Ben Hull shot was half saved only for Sean Davies to follow up for a simple tap-in to complete his treble. With time almost up Llangefni's humiliation was just about complete as Ben Hull squared the ball for Paul Evans (pictured right) to jubilantly get his name on the scoresheet. Glantraeth will now at play at home to Llanfair Scarlets next Saturday.
SAME OLD STORY FOR 13s
(29/03/08) Against a strong Bodedern side the Under 13s gave a good first half display in this morning's game at Malltraeth and were only three down at the interval then came close to pulling a goal back soon after the break. From then on it all went downhill in what has become a familar story as an avalanche of second half goals gave the visitors victory by eleven goals to nil. It must be frustrating for the coaches to see goals so easily conceded after the early play has so often looked promising.
UNDER 17's GAME BACK ON
(28/03/08) Martyn has phoned to say the Under 17s cup tie with Llangefni is now back on for tomorrow (Saturday), kick-off 11.00 am, having been switched to Glantraeth Juniors' CAE COB ground. The Under 13s home game with Bodedern will now kick-off at 9.30 am.
CALLING ALL UNDER 11s
(27/03/08) There is an invitation for all the Under 11s that will be moving up to Under 13s next year to attend training sessions with Kenny and the current under 13s at Cae Cob TONIGHT (Thursday) starting at 5:15 pm until 6:30 pm.
It's very important for the players to start learning the rules of the 11 a side game. Thanks, Bob.
WEEKEND FIXTURES
(26/03/08) The Ospreys have arranged one of their two remaining fixtures for next Sunday when they will travel to face Bro Benllech Moelfre, kick-off 10.30 am. The Under 17's R.S.Gardner Cup quarter final at Llangefni scheduled for Saturday has been postponed because of damage to the Llangefni pitch which has put the ground out of use for the rest of the season. It is proposed to switch the game to Glantraeth on Wednesday 9th April. The Under 13s play Bodedern at Cae Cob on Saturday morning, kick-off 10.30 am.
THE FUTURE OF THE WEBSITE
(26/03/08) I went along to the Under 13s home fixture with Amlwch on Saturday 15th March to take a few pictures of the game for the website. I only stayed about 15 minutes as I had to catch the coach to Denbigh with the first team. I have since learned that a woman, presumably a parent, with the Amlwch team was making enquiries as to who I was and expressing concerns about me taking pictures. By coincidence or otherwise the Anglesey Junior League Secretary came along to the Under 17s game a week later and was following much the same line of enquiry which suggests to me that a complaint may have been made. I have had nothing but support from everyone at Glantraeth since setting up a Juniors website including the use of pictures and in truth I am sure many of our opponents enjoy visiting the site and until now there has never been a word of complaint, however, it only takes one to ruin it for everyone. I have been in the game a long time working with senior and junior sides and in trying to do something constructive for Glantraeth Juniors I wasnt expecting my integrity to be questioned. Maybe thats naivety on my part. Of course we have to be protective of our kids and many common sense procedures have been introduced but the words common sense are not in the vocabulary of the humourless zealots who despite being in the minority always take these things a step too far and in the process will destroy the fun and innocence that is so much part of being young. The ironic thing is that Amlwch themselves had asked my advice about setting up a junior website and now I have had to advise them of the problems they might face which might now deter them from going ahead. If league officials are not going to represent the views of the vast majority of parents (and kids) who see no problem and in fact take pleasure from team and action pictures on websites like ours and instead take sides with that tiny, though often very vocal, minority that see the worst in everyone then there seems little point in continuing with the junior website. Possibly some clarity may emerge from Thursdays league meeting, I am sure Amlwch themselves would welcome some guidance. It will be a great shame if the website closes, I enjoy doing it, I believe it has complimented the great strides Glantraeth Juniors have made over the past 12 months and it has been part of my efforts to try and encourage a whole club mentality here at Glantraeth, not always easy at the best of times. (Stan Strickland)
LEAGUE MEETING THURSDAY
(25/03/08) There is an Anglesey Junior League meeting this coming Thursday at Cae Bob Parry the home of Llangefni Town FC. The meeting starts at 7.30 pm and managers are welcome to attend.
GLYN AGAIN THE PARTY POOPERS
(22/03/08) Cae Glyn fought back from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw and put a dent in Glan Under 17's hopes of the runners-up spot. The Caernarfon side had won the first meeting 2-1 and although Glantraeth always looked the better side they just could not kill off the visitors. Matti Jones (pictured) and Sean Davies went close in the opening minutes then Ben Hull headed over a Jamie Aston cross as the home side piled on the early pressure despite playing against a strong wind. On 26 minutes Matti Jones turned and shot over but five minutes later a scarmble in the Glyn goalmouth saw Huw Williams force the ball home. A minute later it took a fine save from Paul Evans as Glyn's number 11 met a long free kick and it signalled a spell of pressure from the visitors. Glan began the second half strongly, Dion James putting in a good effort from 25 yards then Scott Hughes fired just wide. Eight minutes in Matti Jones scored a second after Aston's shot had been blocked but four minutes later the visitors pulled a goal back as a right wing corner was converted at the near post. With ten minutes remaining Kyle Liggins met a Sean Davies cross only to head narrowly wide. It proved a costly miss as play quickly switched upfield for Glyn to snatch an equaliser. Despite a late siege Glan just couldn't get a winner. Credit to both teams for an entertaining game in difficult conditions, played in a good spirit and well controlled by a young referee who looks destined for higher things. Photos now online. The Under 13s went down 3-1 at Cemaes Bay.
JUNIORS & COLTS BOTH END 1-1
(21/03/08) The Under 9s had a double header with Trearddur Bay this morning at Cae Cob. The Juniors game ended 1-1, Aron giving the Juniors a first half lead
only for Bay to draw level in the second period. Only an outstanding display by the Bay keeper prevented a Glantraeth win. It was much the same story in the Colt's game with the visiting keeper again distinguishing himself. This game also ended one apiece with Arwel on target for the Colts.
LLANGEFNI FIXTURE ARRANGED
(20/03/08) The Under 17's R.S.Gardner Cup quarter final match away to Llangefni Juniors has been arranged for Saturday 29th March, the winners will be at home to Llanfair Scarlets the following Saturday. In the Memorial Trophy quarter finals Glantraeth have been drawn away to Cae Glyn Caernarfon on Saturday April 12th. This Saturday the lads are at home to Cae Glyn in the second last league fixture, kick-off 10.30 am. With Holyhead already champions second place is between Glan and Felinheli who still have to face the leaders. The Under 13s travel to face Cemaes Bay. Updated fixtures for the Under 17s and Under 13s are now online. Bob reports: No game for the Dragons this coming weekend, Menai Bridge unable to play due to work commitments.
We only have two games to go, home to Menai Bridge and away to Amlwch.
After that we intend to play a few of the stronger sides from the Ospreys' league.
HOLYHEAD BEATEN BY DRAGONS
(16/03/08) Robin reports Red Dragons 2 Holyhead 1: The Dragons started with the wind behind them and although Holyhead had the better of the opening period, Carwyn making a fine save from Elliot, the Dragons steadily got on top taking the lead through Dion with a Beckhamesque (?) type shot from the halfway line that caught the keeper unawares, the ball entering the net off a post. There was uncertainty about the second Dragon's goal as to whether Ryan or Osian or Dion got the final touch which Bojangles will hopefully clear up. 2-0 at half-time. The Dragons began well against the wind with Aled solid at the back but Holyhead pulled a goal back as Carwyn saved but the ball fell kindly for the visitors to score. Despite that the Dragons looked comfortable and should have added a third five minutes from time with the best move of the game. Final score 2-1 to the Dragons. (Bojangles has now passed judgment that Dion also got the second goal so it will be credited to him 'til someone tells me different - Stan).
HARD GOING FOR UNDER 13s
(15/03/08) Stan reports: I only managed to catch about ten minutes of this morning's Under 13s game as I was travelling on with the first team to Denbigh. Up against Amlwch who had won all 15 games they have played this season the lads were on a hiding to nothing and so it proved as they lost by twelve goals to nil. I have nothing but admiration for Kenny, Rhys and the lads, they always give one hundred percent and enjoy a fair proportion of the game but their inexperience costs them dearly. During the short time I was there Glantraeth came close to scoring three times yet a goal was all too easily conceded at the other end which pretty well sums up their season. Keep going boys things can only get better.
GLANTRAETH TOURNAMENT
(13/03/08) At last night's committee meeting it was agreed that we would hold a Junior Tournament at Malltraeth over the first two weekends in July. The Under 9s tournament on Saturday 5th July, Under 11s Sunday 6th July, Under 13s Saturday 12th July and Under 17s Sunday 13th July. Full details and an application form to download will be online over the next few days.
COMMITTEE MEETING WEDNESDAY
(10/03/08) There is a Juniors Club committee meeting this Wednesday at Ysgol Bodorgan, 7.30 pm start. Would all team managers and committee members please attend.
WELCOME TO GLAN JUNIORS
(09/03/08) I sent an email last week to Blackburn Rovers asking them to welcome Glantraeth Juniors to Saturday's game over the PA system or in the programme. Robin tells me the welcome was in the programme, he wasn't sure if it was announced over the PA. The youngsters watched a 1-1 draw with Fulham at Ewood Park and arrived home about 9.00 pm last night pretty tired after a long, but hopefully enjoyable, day. (SS)
OSPREYS DESERVE BETTER
(09/03/08) The Ospreys can rightly feel aggrieved at losing 3-1 to Llandegfan Leopards this morning, they were every bit as good as their opponents who had won the first meeting 5-2 and a last ten minutes that saw them lay siege to the Leopards goal came close to giving them the draw their performance deserved, the goal coming fron Sion Thomas and being denied by a post. Photos now online.
SIX PLACES REMAINING
(05/03/08) There are six places remaining for Juniors players (up to and including under 17s) for Saturday's trip to Blackburn Rovers. The cost is 10 which includes entrance to the stand and coach travel. Pick-up points can be discussed. If you want to go phone Robin on 01407 840386 (daytime) or 01248 440630 (evening) or Cogs on 01407 840833 (evening).
EWOOD ARRANGEMENTS
(02/03/08) Next Saturday a party of under 11s and under 9s with team coaches will be travelling to Ewood Park to see the Premiership game between Blackburn Rovers and Fulham. The coach leaves Ysgol Bodorgan at 9.30 am on the Saturday morning and the boys will need a packed lunch and pocket money. There will be a toilet stop on the way. It is anticipated that the coach will arrive back at Ysgol Bodorgan between 8.30 and 9.00 pm.
DAVE PRAISES THE 'STALWARTS'
(02/03/08) Dave reports the Ospreys 7-1 defeat at Cemaes Bay: It was a little disappointing to see so few Ospreys had made themselves available for this encounter against the strongest team in the league. We only just mustered a team! I thank all who did play for the support and effort shown both on the field and off. Cemaes were frantic at the start and dominated the Ospreys some of whom were still suffering 'Jet lag' after the journey. Cemaes made repeated goal attempts and were solid at the back. As I have come to expect the Ospreys showed fight and tried to play football when in possession although outgunned at times. We conceded 3 before half time with the elements. Cemaes were able to bring on some fresh legs and soon it was 6-0. I was looking for the umpire! In the final quarter we enjoyed our best period of the game and basically stopped the rot. Gwern won a leg race with two full backs to slot home a goal as spirits raised and we rallied. Dion and Daniel led by example. In the final minutes of the extended 2nd half we conceded goal 7. Judging by the law of averages the final score was about right for the amount of chances created. Some difficult efforts were saved and simple efforts leaked by Ospreys. On a high note I am told our goal is only the 3rd Cemaes have conceded all season! In conclusion, 'We cannot just rely on our stalwarts. It would be nice to choose from a full squad for our remaining 3 games'.
DRAGONS 2 BODEDERN 0
(02/03/08) Bojangles reports: Playing into a strong head wind and with the Boded boys on a high after beating Llangefni last week (the only team to do so this season) the Glan boys took hold of the game from the off with some good passing and structured movement resulting in decent attempts at goal, the work rate and commitment of the boys was good this morning with only a few lapses throughout the course of the game, Boded had one clear attempt at goal with their striker one on one with Carwyn who stayed up on his feet made himself big and knocked the shot out for a corner. Boded were a much improved side to the one the Dragons played at the start of the season working well together but the Glan boys always looked the more likely to score which they did towards the end of the first half when Ryan on the edge of their box turned his man well and blasted the ball through the mass of bodies into the back of the net. The second half started much in the same vein with the wind now at their backs the Dragons surged forward again and again keeping the Boded goalie busy throughout the half in fact the boys were playing a little to much football instead of using the wind and just shooting from distance (no pleasing some people), mid way through the second half Dion pounced onto a wayward ball adjusted himself and slotted the ball well into the Boded goal, 2 -0 the final score. Well done to all the boys who played this morning.
LIAM GIVES 13s EARLY LEAD
(01/03/08) Glantraeth Under 13s went down 6-1 to Cemaes Bay this morning at Cae Cob. Liam Owen gave the home side an early lead just after Cemaes had hit a post but the visitors soon pulled level despite a great effort from Luke to keep the ball out then took the lead with a fluke as a cross dropped over everyone into the net. Cemaes scored again through a fine goal from their number 4 to lead 3-1 at the interval. Glantraeth had an equal share of the second half but were hit with three more goals to give the scoreline a look that didn't really do justice to the effort they put in. There is much to admire about the boys, they always give 100% and contribute fully but at times their inexperience shows and they get severely punished as they did today. A mention to Oliver Evans who had a fine game in goal.
UNDER 17s POSTPONED
(29/02/08) Mike reports that the Under 17s fixture tomorrow at Llanfair Scarlets has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch meaning no games for three weeks.
OSPREYS 1 DRAGONS 2
(29/02/08) Ospreys' manager Dave Webster reports on yesterday's friendly at Cae Cob: A solid performance from the Ospreys had the Dragons on 'tenderhooks' for large parts of this friendly encounter. It was a vast difference to the Ospreys weak display in the pre-season. Both teams had players missing but possibly most affected were the Dragons. An unfortunate headed own goal after a dangerous corner saw the Ospreys take the lead in the first half. A defensive lapse saw the Dragons equalize, as the both Ospreys players charged towards the ball carrier, oblivious to players loose in the box. It was 1-1 at the break and the Ospreys were looking 'good value for money'. There were chances for both teams in the second half but, towards the end, Jack struck a low drive into the corner of the goal to break the deadlock. There was no coming back from that! Although the Ospreys were on the wrong side of the score line we can take heart from matching the Dragons in many departments. Personally I enjoyed watching this game. It was more entertaining than Middlesborough v Sheffield Utd the other night on the box!
UNDER 13s IN WITH A CHANCE
(28/02/08) The Ospreys have arranged an away match at Cemaes Bay for Sunday, 10.30 am kick off. It will be a tough game for the youngsters as they lost 5-0 in the home encounter. The Ospreys and the Red Dragons were due to meet in a friendly game at Cae Cob this evening. With only two league games remaining the Under 17s travel to Llanfair Scarlets on Saturday looking to consolidate second place behind champions-elect Holyhead. The Under 13s are now at home to Cemaes Bay on Saturday, kick-off 10.30 am at Cae Cob, and this is a game that they must have a chance of winning against a side with a similar record.
FOUR FROM JAMIE AS 17s GO NAP
(23/02/08) Glantraeth Under 17s beat Bontnewydd 5-0 at Cae Cob this morning with an excellent display in which every player played a full part although midfielder Jamie Aston (pictured above) stole the headlines with four goals. Matti Jones broke his recent goal drought by opening the scoring after 13 minutes and five minutes later Glan were two up as good play from Jason Edwards created the opening for Jamie's first. Bontnewydd were also contributing to what was an entertaining game despite the strong crosswind and were close to pulling a goal back on 20 minutes as keeper Paul Evans was called on to make a flying save from Caio Iwan (son of singer and politician Daffyd Iwan).
Sean Davies came close to a third for the home side with 7 minutes of the half remaining with a shot from 25 yards that clipped the post but four minutes later Jamie got his second following a fine threaded pass from Dion (pictured right). Jason struck the crossbar eight minutes into the second period as Glan continued on top and two minutes later Matti scored what looked a perfectly good goal only for the referee, who otherwise had an excellent game, to accept a club linesman's claim that there had been a hand ball. It was a brief respite for the visitors as Jamie completed his hat-trick on 65 minutes. Matti, twice, and Kyle Liggins went close before Jamie completed the scoring two minutes from time. Photos now online.
WEEKEND REVIEW
(22/02/08) The Ospreys home game with Llandegfan scheduled for Saturday has been cancelled. Dave reports that there are two more training sessions at Bodedern School gym at 7 pm on Thursdays then training moves on to Cae Cob. The Under 17s entertain Bontnewydd tomorrow morning, kick-off 10.30 am and the Under 13s are away at Llanfair Swifts. Cogs reports no game this weekend for the Dragons.
MARCH FIXTURES RELEASED
(21/02/08) The Under 13s and Under 17s fixtures for next month have now been published. The Under 17s are away to Llanfair Scarlets on Saturday 1st March. At present no games are scheduled for the following two Saturdays with Cae Glyn the opponents at Malltraeth on Saturday 22nd March. The Under 13s have no game on 1st March and the following Saturday travel to Llandegfan Leopards in the 1st Round of the Alec Beech Memorial Shield. On Saturday 15th March they are at home to Amlwch and a week later travel to Cemaes Bay.
ALL SQUARE AT LLANFAIRPWLL
(17/02/08) This morning's meeting of the Red Dragons and Llanfair Hotshots ended all square at 0-0. Bojangles reports: A beautiful morning to watch a match so that was a plus with the usual warm welcome, it's never an easy game when the two teams in question meet and today was no different with the play see sawing from end to end but for me the Dragons keeper Carwyn was our man of the match pulling off some fine saves and taking command of his area well, that's not to say the Dragons didn't have their chances with three or four of the boys having good attempts at goal with their keeper stopping a fine shot from an early free kick, at the death the Dragons broke down field with a fine pass onto Jamie who was one on one with the keeper but just dragged the ball wide of the post, having said that I would have taken a draw half way through the 2nd half. As my old school reports used to say "Could do better" but it wasn't a loss, well played to both team's.
The Under 9 Juniors lost 4-1 to Llanfair Siarcod at Cae Cob this morning with Alex the scorer. With sufficient players now available the Under 9 Colts are now in action, losing today 1-0 against Valley. As reported the Colts won 1-0 at Llangefni last week with Callum getting the winning goal.
AWESOME DISPLAY BY OSPREYS
(17/02/08) Dave reports on yesterday's amazing fightback by the Ospreys: This was a simply awesome display of tenacity and belief from the Ospreys. Coming back from 3-1 down to win 3-4! Dion showed a master class of controlled football in the middle, Colin bossed the back and Gwern ran his socks off. I can honestly say this was a whole squad effort where all 12 players did their duty. At the start Glan sat back a little and Sbarcs took advantage and were first to score but Daniel soon scored an equaliser. The first half seemed to last forever and we went into half time 2-1 down. At the restart we conceded a third against the run of play. Spirits did not fade as we continued to try to pass and fight for every ball. Daniel looped a ball into the net and took us to 3-2. A little later a ball rebounded to Dion from a corner and he struck a pearler into the top right of the net and suddenly it was 3-3. About 5 minutes from the end Marcus netted after a goal mouth scramble. It was 3-4 and the boys closed the game in solid fashion. This was just reward for all the effort shown throughout the season. Previous league games have shown us unlucky to be on the wrong end of scorelines. We deserved this one! Llongyfarchiadau i'r pawb roedd yn chwarae! NB: The Under 17 and Under 13 fixtures were cancelled because of frozen pitches.
BLACKPOOL TRIP CANCELLED
(15/02/08) Dave informs us that the participation of the Under 11s in this year's Blackpool Tournament has been cancelled. He further explained: There were some communication problems with the event organiser. He had failed to reply to four emails and I constantly received an answering service on his landline. Eventually I did receive an email to the effect he was on a family holidays and had computer problems. He added he wanted the whole of the £3.600 fee up front, in the form of a personal cheque, on 20th March, with final numbers. He would only furnish our hotel details after receipt of these funds and our final numbers. I replied by explaining our collection was already geared to 20th April and we could only offer him a £900 deposit (a quarter) on 20th March and the balance on arrival. Alternatively, I offered to pay the full remittance on 20th March via Barclaycard. I then received an email stating 'Unfortunately your method of payment is unacceptable and we have therefore arranged for our cashier to refund your deposit'. I was not given any opportunity to respond. I am sorry to say there will be no Blackpool trip for us. I have discussed this issue with Robin. He stated that he will try to find an alternative and suggested I retain the deposits paid to me for the interum to see if some thing else can be arranged....Cheers Dave
WEEKEND ACTION
(14/02/08) The Ospreys are away to Llanfair Sbarcs on Saturday, kick-off 10.30 am, while the Red Dragons are also at Llanfairpwll to face the Hotshots on Sunday. At home are the Under 13s to Bodedern on Saturday (10.30 am) and the Under 9s who entertain Llanfair Siarcod on Sunday (11.00 am). In the first round of the R.S. Gardner Cup the Under 17s make the short journey to Llangefni.
ARON LEADS THE WAY WITH FOUR
(10/02/08) Robin reports on the weekend action: The Red Dragons drew 2-2 at home to Bro Benllech Moelfre this morning, a disappointing result as they were winning 2-0 at the break, Jamie scoring both. The visitors came back in the second period, taking advantage of two unnecessary free kicks and slack marking. The Under 9s completed a double over Llangefni, quickly running up a three goal lead through Aron and although Cefni pulled a goal back another goal from Aron in the first half made it 4-1 which proved the end of the scoring as the Glantraeth team lost their shape somewhat probably due to over-confidence. There was a good atmosphere at the game amongst both sets of parents. In a second game Glantraeth won 1-0. The Under 13s (pictured above) lost 9-0 at home to a strong Llandegfan Leopards outfit. After competing well early on it was again a late scoring burst by their opponents that made the scoreline appear less than flattering at the final whistle. Finally, the Ospreys played a friendly away to Trearddur Bay, losing 8-2.
SUPER KEEPER SAVES PENRHOS
(09/02/08) Martyn reports: The Under 17s can count themselves unlucky not to come away from Treborth without all three points. With constant pressure from Glantraeth the home side could not match the pace and passing, unfortunately for Glan they came up against a goalkeeper that made save after save - not Lucky, but outstanding - whether it was one on one's or shots from distance he was equal to the task. Matti Jones when he did beat the keeper found the far post and Kyle Liggins with a cracking left foot shot from outside the box saw the ball fly past the far post and another shot rebounded off the crossbar. HT 0-0. Five minutes into the second half the keeper again made two fine saves, first from Matti Jones then Jamie Aston, the ball fell in the path of Bryn Jones who hit an unstoppable shot into the net with the keeper beaten at last. More pressure from Glantraeth but no addition to the score. A quick throw on the right by Penrhos found the defence sleeping and Paul Evans in the Glan goal was left with no cover 1-1 as time drew to an end it was Penrhos who could have snatched all three points as a thunderous shot by the centre forward from 25 Yards crashed against the cross bar and rebounded to safety. Final Score 1-1.
ANYONE LOST A KEY?
(08/02/08) Robin found a key on the Junior's ground last week. Please see him if you know who it belongs to or want to claim it.
UNDER 13s FACE MASSIVE TASK
(07/02/08) The Under 9s are away to Llewod Llangefni this weekend and the Red Dragons at home to Bro Benllech Moelfre, kick-off 10.30 am Sunday. The Under 13s entertain Llandegfan Leopards on Saturday morning. It is a huge task for Kenny's boys who suffered their heaviest defeat of the season at Llandegfan earlier in the season. The Under 17s travel to Penrhosgarnedd looking to make it six league wins on the trot. The Ospreys have cancelled Sunday training and agreed to play a friendly away to Trearddur Bay, 10.45 am Saturday.
EASY WIN FOR UNDER 17s
(02/02/08) Martyn reports: No game is ever easy, but the U17s cruised to victory over local rivals Llangefni. Playing on the senior's pitch for the first time in the league they showed just how to use the wider pitch and were constantly on the attack throughout the game. After 18 minutes a corner from the left was cleared out to Carl Edwards, who coolly hit the ball past the visiting keeper. Five minutes later it was 2-0 when Matti Jones crossed from the right and a clever dummy by Jason Edwards found Jamie Aston who placed the ball wide of the keeper for a precise finish. HT: 2-0. The second half started with Glantraeth constantly on the attack, the score could have been greater with Scott Hughes and Matti Jones having chance after chance that either hit the post or was saved by the Llangefni keeper. The third soon came after a corner taken from the right fell kindly in the box for Huw Williams to poke home, similarly the fourth came from a goalmouth scramble that Sean Davies poked home. The fifth and final goal came from Kyle Liggins who cut in from the right and hit an unstopable drive past the keeper. Paul Evans in the Glantraeth goal only had a handful of saves to make as the defence stood solid. A good result that helps the boys strive for the runners-up Spot in the league, helped by the fact Bontnewydd and Felinheli drew 2-2. Photos supplied by Jon Morris now online.
PROUD TO BE AN OSPREY
(02/02/08) Dave reports: The whole twelve man squad and supporters are fully committed to our team. It showed today in a dominant display as our boys bossed a tenacious Holyhead side in most areas of the pitch for large slices of the game. Playing with the elements we forced the young Holyhead side completely onto the back foot. Towards the end of the first half Daniel scored a great goal, a left footed half volley into the top left corner (captured n video!). This was after a superb looping left footed cross from Jon Pommerening. Alas that eventually proved to be our only reward for our efforts. Unfortunately for us Holyhead replied immediately owing to a lack of concentration, whilst the boys were still euphoric after scoring. Amazingly It was only 1-1 at the break and we had failed to press home our advantage. Changes were made for the 2nd half. Before the new boys had time to settle a missed header allowed the sharp Holyhead striker behind our defence again to score a second. I heard Victor Meldrew shout, 'I don't believe it!' several times or was it me or Cliff? There after we pressed forwards. Holyhead looked to cause us problems on the break but they were well marshalled. Two small defensive lapses lost us this game which was a high price to pay. Well done to both teams who provided a fair contest and displayed exciting and entertaining spectacle. Thanks to everyone who took part including the tea ladies who raised 15! No match next week. Training 11am Sunday 10th Feb at Cae Cob.
WEEKEND PREVIEW
(01/02/08) The Ospreys home fixture with Holyhead has been arranged for Saturday at Cae Cob, kick-off 11.45 am. The Under 13s are away to Llangefni while the Under 17s home derby with Cefni has been switched to the first team pitch at Trefdraeth with a 10.30 am kick-off. The Red Dragons are at home to Holyhead Sunday morning and the Under 9s are away to Holyhead.
CHELSEA'S IN THE MONEY
(28/01/08) Somewhat belatedly here are the results of January's Monthly Draw made at the last committee meeting. The 25 first prize was won by Chelsea Roberts (No.50) with B.Roberts of Bangor (No.1) picking up the 15 second prize. The 10 winning ticket (No.51) was unsold telling you there are still some tickets for sale so see Robin, Karen or a team manager if you want to join and support the kids.
DRAGONS DRAW WITH CEFNI
(27/01/08) Robin reports on today's games: The Dragons travelled to face unbeaten Llangefni Juniors and for the second time this season fought out a draw, this time 0-0. An even first half saw Andrew Jones hit the post for the home side with Ryan squirting a shot just wide for Glantraeth. After the break Ryan again went close with Carwyn in the Dragons' goal having to pull off a fine save late in the game to deny Llangefni the win. It was a real team performance with Jake again outstanding and Dion and Aled deserving of mention. Cae Cob was looking in fine condition this afternoon after being cut and marked with the Under 9s going down 3-1 to Llangefni after a goal from Alex had given Glantraeth a deserved first half lead. Despite having Daniel and Sam missing the boys played well but the visitors equalised midway through the second period as their fitness through playing more games recently told and two late goals gave them victory.
PATCHY DISPLAY FROM OSPREYS
(26/01/08) Dave reports Llangefni 4 Ospreys 0: We played into a strong wind during the first half. The boys stuck to their task well but conceded a couple of fortuitous goals to go 3-0 down at the break. Such was the advantage of the elements I didn't believe the lead was insurmountable. Alas, we had to wait until the final 10 minutes for us to come out of our shell with the full backs pressing properly. It was now 4-0, as we laid siege on the Llangefni goal. Spurned chances and good Llangefni goalkeeping caused us to draw a blank. Over all this was a patchy performance. A 100% effort, for the whole game, is required if we are to improve our results. We have 12 players and every one will be given a good slice of every match. Everybody had some good spells but those named stood out for effort this time: Daniel, Gwern, Harri, Jamie, Guto and John (Iffy in patches!).
SO UNLUCKY FOR GLAN
(26/01/08) A goal two minutes from time from Asa Thomas gave Holyhead a 1-0 victory in an Under 17 Coast Cup quarter-final that Glantraeth never deserved to lose, only the woodwork, the heroics of Holyhead first team keeper Elliot Smith (pictured right) and the refusal of a blatant second half penalty preventing Hotspur going down to their first defeat of the season. Glan keeper Paul Evans had hardly a shot to save throughout while Smith at the other end turned in a man of the match performance. Matti Jones almost put Glan ahead in the first half as he saw his shot thud against the crossbar then Jamie Aston and Carl Edwards both failed to cash in on unmarked headers from good positions. Three tremendous saves in a two minute spell by Smith early in the second half kept Holyhead in the game then Matti Jones was clearly tripped in the area but the whistle did not come. With time almost up there was heartbreak for Glan after such a good performance as Thomas got behind the defence and finished well with a lob over Evans.
WEEKEND ACTION
(25/01/08) Mike reports that the Under 17's Coast Cup game at Holyhead will be played at Peibio tomorrow morning. Dave has been on to say that the Ospreys are playing away to Llangefni Juniors on Saturday at the Cricket Ground, kick-off 11.00 am. The Under 13s are due to be at home to Holyhead Peibio tomorrow morning and the Under 9s at home to Llangefni Juniors B (Sunday 2.00 pm). The Red Dragons are also scheduled to meet Llangefni away.
LET'S GIVE THEM OUR SUPPORT
(22/01/08) Next Saturday morning, weather permitting, the Under 17s travel to face Holyhead Hotspur Peibio for a place in the semi-finals of the North Wales Coast FA Cup. It is a massive test for the lads against a team that have won every league and cup game this season but we have enjoyed periods of supremacy in both league games between the two clubs despite losing and with a good performance and good support there is a feeling we can reverse previous results this time. Regarding the Under 17s we have been informed by the Anglesey Junior League that our players cannot sign or play for Glantraeth first team without ruling them out of playing in youth competitions in this age bracket. We are trying to clarify this rule as it appears that it is not being enforced as it supposedly should.
NEXT MONTH'S FIXTURES OUT
(21/01/08) The Verdant Anglesey Junior League have released February's fixtures for the Under 13s and the Under 17s. The Under 17s host Llangefni Juniors on Saturday 2nd February and the following weekend are away to Penrhosgarnedd. In the first round of the R.S.Gardner Cup Glan face Llangefni again on Saturday 16th February, this time away from home, and finish off the month with a visit from Bontnewydd. The Under 13s are away to Llangefni Juniors on 2nd February followed by Llandegfan Leopards home then Bodedern home and then travel to face Llanfair Swifts on the final Saturday of the month.
OSPREYS OFF
(20/01/08) Dave reports that this morning's Ospreys' game has been called off to protect the juniors pitch at Malltraeth.
EVEN CAE COB IS STRUGGLING
(17/01/08) So much rain has fallen this week that even the juniors' ground at Malltraeth is struggling to cope with surface water now clearly visible on some areas of the pitch meaning there must be a serious doubt that the Under 17s home game with Llangefni can go ahead on Saturday. The Under 13s are scheduled to be at Cemaes Bay. There may be enough 'dry land' to accommodate small-sided games with the Red Dragons due to be at home on Sunday at 10.30 am and the Ospreys at home to Valley Juniors also on Sunday, kick-off 11.00 am (refreshments available). The Under 9s are at Trearddur Bay weather permitting. Dave wants to remind parents that final numbers/names and deposits are required asap for the U11's Blackpool trip. He will be at the Red Dragons home game on Saturday. People who want a form or wish to hand him their deposits can do so then. He has extended the cut-off point to 21st Jan owing to communication problems, etc. He needs to supply the event organiser with accommodation forms for the Hotel before the 23rd Jan! Robin has been in touch to say that there are now Glantraeth Juniors' Beannie Hats available this weekend at 5 each. A bargain.
WIN ONE - LOSE ONE
(12/01/08) In games played today the Under 17s won 2-0 away at Amlwch with spectacular strikes from Sean Davies and Jamie Aston and the Under 13s lost 5-1 at home to Llangoed.
COMMITTEE MEETING MONDAY
(11/01/08) There is a Juniors' Committee Meeting next Monday evening (14th January) at Ysgol Bodorgan, 7.00 pm start. Please try and attend as there are several important issues to discuss.
FULL WEEKEND SCHEDULE
(10/01/08) Despite being surrounded by flood water in all directions Cae Cob, the pitch that soaks up water like a sponge, was in perfect condition today ready for the weekend's fixtures. The Under 13s entertain Llangoed on Saturday morning wth the Red Dragons and the Under 17s scheduled to be away to Amlwch. The Under 9s are at home to Amlwch on Sunday, kick-off 10.30 am. Bro Benllech Moelfre have cancelled the Ospreys away match with them owing to 'their grass being too long.' It is hoped they will play us at the end of the league season.
LIAM STRIKES IN FINAL MINUTE
(07/01/08) A tremendous last minute strike into the top corner from Liam Vaughan Jones gave the Under 9s a 1-1 draw at Menai Bridge yesterday. It was a one sided game that a Glantraeth side depleted by flu should have won but smaller than usual goals made scoring and making that dominance count very difficult.
GLAN TO FACE HOLYHEAD
(05/01/08) In the quarter-final of the NWCFA Cup Glantraeth Under 17s will now be away to Holyhead Peibio on Saturday 26th January. Holyhead this morning beat Bontnewydd 4-0 to keep up their 100% record this season.
LATE GOAL CRUEL ON OSPREYS
(05/01/08) After losing the first game between the two teams 6-0 the Ospreys knew they had a tough task on down at Cae Cob this morning against unbeaten Trearddur Bay but a herculean effort saw them go so close to snatching a deserved draw before losing 2-1 to a late goal. Playing with the wind the Ospreys took the game to Bay in the first period and a series of attacks came so close to giving them the lead before they finally broke through just before the break as Harri converted Gwern's cross from the right. Up against the elements the Ospreys had to draw on their defensive qualities in the second period as Bay stormed forward, finally drawing level midway through the half. With just over four minutes remaining the visitors sneaked a winner, cruel reward for a tremendous display that must have delighted Dave and Cliff.
BLACKPOOL 2008 TOURNAMENT
(04/01/08) Dave writes: The coaches of the U11's teams have provisionally agreed to enter a Glantraeth Juniors U11 side in the above tournament to be held on May 3rd and May 4th 2008. The Red Dragons and Ospreys will combine resources to assemble an 11 a-side team/squad. The team will play at least 6 matches. The price includes 2 nights B&B and evening meal at one of the 13 sponsored Blackpool front, Hotels. Full details are included in the attached poster (download here) or from your coach. Together, we will try to raise money to help finance this venture and reduce the final cost to the players. A minimum ratio of 1 adult per 3 children is needed. Names and a 15 deposit is required asap, (before January 16th)...Many Thanks Dave W
OSPREYS RETURN TO ACTION
(02/01/08) One game confirmed for this weekend is the Ospreys home game with Trearddur Bay that kicks off at midday on Saturday. The away fixture ended in a 6-0 win for Bay but the Ospreys showed metal in the second half and will be hoping for better this time. Dave reports that the players v coaches & parents game last weekend ended 6-6 with the players winning after a penalty shoot out. There are rumours of an Easter re-match.
GAME BACK TO SUNDAY
(28/12/07) Because the weather forecast is wind and rain for tomorrow the managers/parents v players game has now been put back to Sunday, kick-off 1.30 pm. Let's hope for a good turnout.
JANUARY FIXTURES
(27/12/07) The Under 13s and Under 17s fixtures have been released for January. Neither team have a game on Saturday 5th January but the Under 17s are away to Amlwch the following Saturday followed by Llangefni Juniors at home on the 19th. The last Saturday of the month sees the quarter final of the NWCFA Cup when Glantraeth travel to face the winners of Holyhead Peibio or Bontnewydd which has still not been decided. The Under 13s entertain Llangoed on the 12th, followed by Cemaes Bay away then Holyhead Peibio at home.
SHOWDOWN AT CAE COB
(24/12/07) Slowly details are beginning to emerge of the game between the managers/parents and the players that will take place next Saturday, 29th December, at Cae Cob, kick-off 1.30 pm. The players will consist of four under 11s, four under 13s and four under 17s according to Cogs and the rules are still being written as we speak!
JACK'S GOAL PROVES WINNER
(23/12/07) A second half goal from Jack gave the Dragons a one goal victory over Amlwch this morning at Cae Cob. The first half was a fairly even affair but the Dragons dominated after the break and would have won by more if they had taken their chances. The goal came following a ball downfield by Carwyn that was picked up by Ryan who set up Jamie for a shot that was half saved with Jack following up to score. Our reporter at the game tells us that another highlight of the second half came when Bob tried to head the ball back only to fall over the water bottles and land flat on his **se!
SEASON'S GREETINGS
(23/12/07) Happy Christmas to the players, parents, officials and sponsors of Glantraeth Juniors and all our friends in the Verdant Anglesey Junior Football League.
ADVANTAGE HOTSHOTS
(16/12/07) This morning's game between the Red Dragons and Llanfair Hotshots played in freezing conditions at Cae Cob ended in a 2-1 win for the visitors. Ryan put the Dragons ahead but the Hotshots soon levelled and a goal in the second half gave them victory. Robin reports that they adapted to the conditions better and just about deserved their win.
LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE UNDER 13s
(15/12/07) The Under 13s finally made it this morning by winning 3-2 at Cae Cob against Trearddur Bay Colts for their first league win of the season. Congratulations to Kenny and the boys for sticking at it through what has been a tough learning curve and getting their just reward. Sylvester writes: I was so glad to be at Cae Cob this morning to witness the under 13s winning a match. It was a fully deserved win, outplaying their opponents with their passing and movement around the field. These lads have shown that with determination and team effort anything is possible. They are a young team and will develop further this season, giving them experience ready for next season. They work hard, and never give up. I would also like to congratulate the managers for their hard work in training and for having faith in the boys, even if they win or loose. This win today meant so much to the lads, one even said it was their best Christmas present! WELL DONE LADS, YOU ARE A GREAT BUNCH, GOOD LUCK WITH THE REST OF THE SEASON. FROM A PROUD SUPPORTER.
SENSATIONAL LATE SHOW WINS IT
(15/12/07) 3-1 down with little more than fifteen minutes remaining it looked all over for Glantraeth Under 17s at Felinheli this morning only for a dramatic late turnaround that saw them score three times to run out 4-3 winners. They could have hardly started in worse fashion as a weak clearance led to the home side taking the lead after just 23 seconds. Glan levelled on 27 minutes through a tremendous volley from Ben Hull (pictured left). Two goals in a minute midway through the second period seemed to have settled the game in Felinhelis favour but they reckoned without the battling qualities of Glantraeth. The fightback started on 74 minutes as a superb through ball from Jamie Ashton gave Matti Jones a clear run on goal and although his first effort came back off a post he was able to finish at the second attempt. A minute later Felinheli half cleared a Ben Hull free kick and Sean Davies swooped to smash a low shot through a crowd of players and past the keeper. With three minutes remaining there were jubilant scenes as Scott Hughes struck from close range to score the winner and give Glan the double over the Gwynedd side.
UNDER 13s ENTERTAIN BAY COLTS
(13/12/07) The Under 13s look for their first league points of the season on Saturday morning when Trearddur Bay Colts are the visitors to Malltraeth, kick-off 10.30 am. The youngsters have given a good account of themselves for long periods of several games before conceding late goals that have hardly done their performance justice but the game against the Colts earlier in the season was a fairly close run affair and they must have a chance. Glantraeth Under 17s have a tough game at Felinheli who have only lost one game all season and that was against Glantraeth back in September! The lads currently lie in second place behind Holyhead who have a 100% record. Matti Jones (pictured) and Scott Hughes are both on 8 goals for the season and will be looking to add to their tally on Saturday. Kick-off is 10.30 am. No confirmation yet as to whether the Red Dragons have a game this weekend.

A REAL THRILLER AT CAE COB
(09/12/07) Rarely will Cae Cob see a better game than this as the Red Dragons and Llangefni Juniors finished one apiece this morning. It was a thrilling end-to-end encounter throughout with some great skill and commitment on display. Ryan gave the Dragons an early lead only for Cefni to level two minutes later and that's how it remained 'til the interval. The visitors came out strongly after the break and Carwyn made two great blocks then the Dragons began to threaten at the other end. With both sides going for the winner Glantraeth almost won it at the death as Ryan freed Cameron who found the keeper well positioned to save.
GLANTRAETH 3 DENBIGH TOWN 2
(08/12/07) In what was likely the only game of football to be played on Anglesey today both teams should take great credit for a battling performance. Martyn reports: Despite playing against a fierce wind Glantraeth constantly put Denbigh Town under pressure and after 35 minutes a low shot from outside the box saw Scott Hughes beat the diving keeper to make it 1-0. Thats how it stayed until half time. In the second half again Glantraeth made all the early running and persistance by Matti Jones saw him get to the ball before the opposition keeper and guide it into the net 2-0. The boys then forgot everything the manager had told them and decided to take the sky route which saw the ball drift everywhere, this followed a disputed free kick which some thought should have gone the other way. From the resulting free kick the slippery ball went through the keeper's gloves and the pressure was on. 10 minutes from time Denbigh equalised having got a lucky rebound from a clearance, this time Paul Evans in goal had no chance 2-2. This shocked the boys into life and saw first Jamie Aston shave the cross bar, Scott Hughes and Sean Davies going close and from a corner a scramble and from a header from Ben Hull the visiting keeper tipped the ball over. Extra time again saw pressure from the home side with very few attacks really troubling Paul Evans. The second period kicked off and within seconds the ball was played back to Carl Edwards who hit the ball high with the wind the ball bounced and deceived the keeper who was then in a race with Scott Hughes who was following up to tap the ball home. Thats how it stayed to the end with both teams having a few chances. However with the rain and the wind falling the final whistle went and both teams congratulated each other. NB: In the next round Glantraeth are now away to Bontnewydd or Holyhead Hotspur Peibio who play next Saturday.
17s GO FOR LAST EIGHT
(07/12/07) The Under 17's delayed North Wales Coast FA Cup game against Denbigh Town takes place at Malltraeth tomorrow morning kick-off 10.30 am with the heavy rain having had little effect on the Cae Cob pitch. The Under 13s were due to play Bodedern at Gwalchmai but this game has now been called off. The Red Dragons have a game with Llangefni on Sunday.
BLOWN AWAY
(01/12/07) Despite the heroics of John in goal the Ospreys went down 5-0 to an impressive Cemaes Bay side this morning at Cae Cob. In very windy conditions the youngsters battled gamely to keep Bay out for long periods but the pressure finally told with a goal in the last minute making it five for the visitors. Dave reports: Ospreys struggled in the gale and had little confidence to link up any passing. Cemaes were larger, quicker and a more competitive and a better drilled team. They moved quickly onto slow/loose balls and overwelmed us in the second half playing with the elements.Credit to all our boys who fought on to the final whistle showing real spirit to keep the score down. There was some last ditch defending by the Ospreys. A team with lesser characters would have completely folded. Clearly the big footballing teams in our league are the two 'Bays' so we must accept this and move forwards. To sum up our league season, at this half way stage, I would say: 4 fairly close matches, 2 sound defeats, 2 good results. As we were only formed at the start of the season, Not too bad. Mark awarded C+. I know we can improve in 2008. We continue to keep as many involved as possible, whilst trying to remain competitive. We have 5 youngsters who will be useful players for next years U11's. Hopefully some of our older boys will be considered for the U13's team in the next 2 years. A big thank you to Robin and everyone for sorting out a new kit for us, the boys had wide eyes when they saw it. They cannot wait to wear it.
C'MON...GIVE US A GAME!
(30/11/07) Two of Glan's younger players are pictured in fancy dress challenging the managers, Bob, Cogs, Webbo, Cliff, Kenny, Rhys, Mike and Geraint (and maybe some under 17s?) to a fundraising game before Christmas. So come on fellas, get your panto gear on and "give us a game".
WEEKEND PREVIEW
(29/11/07) Through no fault of our own we have been forced into a situation where the Under 17s now have no game this weekend, and to say we are not best pleased would be an understatement, so it will be the Ospreys on Cae Cob on Saturday morning when they entertain Cemaes Bay, kick-off 11.15 am. Please give them your support. The Under 13s face another tough challenge away to Holyhead Peibio on Saturday, kick-off 10. 30 am.
NWCFA CALL 17s GAME OFF
(27/11/07) Saturday's Under 17 Coast Cup game at home to Denbigh Town Youth has been put back seven days following a decision by the North Wales Coast FA after Denbigh claimed they had 'transportation problems.' We have received no satisfactory explanation as to why they should have 'transportation problems' this Saturday but not the following Saturday.
CHRISTMAS BINGO
(26/11/07) Glantraeth Juniors' Christmas Bingo takes place at Ysgol Bodorgan on Friday 7th December, 6.30 pm for a 7.00 pm start. As ever your support will be much appreciated. Prizes and helpers on the night are still wanted. Please contact Robin. On the same night the first 100 Club monthly draw will be made.
DISAPPOINTING FROM OSPREYS
(25/11/07) Dave reports Llandegfan Leopards 5 Ospreys 2: Spirit and mind was lacking at the start of this game. Muddy conditions made the going slippy and uncomfortable which dampened the mood further. It was a bit of a shock to the system to suddenly experience this having just come out of a warm bed. The Leopards went into an early lead with a fairly simple goal. This sparked some life into the Ospreys and Dylan slotted home in an immediate response. The Leopards scored two more goals before half time, at least one of these should have been dealt with. After half time the Ospreys tried to press forwards but were caught out on the break, by a quicker Llandegfan midfield, who ran through the defence to net a further 2 goals. The better football came from Ospreys in the last quarter and a fantastic passing move down the right and a shot by Sion saw the ball spill to Dylan who slotted home again. The Ospreys came close to scoring a third several times and they managed not to concede further goals after better goalkeeping. The Ospreys can only rue that more consistency and a 100% effort from all would have probably reaped better rewards.
17s CRUISE TO VICTORY
(24/11/07) Martyn reports: The Under 17s were hardly troubled in their 3-1 victory over Penrhosgarnedd with the woodwork, four times, and five excellent saves by the visiting keeper saving the visitors from being routed. Penrhos should have taken the lead after 10 minutes when Sean Davies was adjudged to pull back an attacker in the box, however the penalty hit the post and the follow up was sent wide. Glantraeth took the lead after 25 minutes when Matti Jones fed the ball to Scott Hughes who coolly slotted it past the approaching keeper. Five minutes later the defence where guilty of not playing to the whistle when they stood still expecting an offside flag it did not come and Penrhos made it one apiece. In the second half with the wind at their backs Glantraeth piled on the pressure and after 57 minutes some good work down the left the ball was crossed in and found Jamie Aston on the edge of the box who cracked the ball into the net. The Penrhos keeper then made a string of excellent saves, first a bullet shot from Matti Jones, a powerful header from Ben Hull, a one-on-one with Scott Hughes and a long range effort from Jason Edwards. However, he was finally beaten and by a great goal. Matti Jones received the ball outside the penalty area and blasted a shot that rebounded of the crossbar to Jamie Aston who himself was 20 yds from goal, he shot and put the game out of reach of the opposition. A good result despite the blustery conditions.
17s HOME - 9s & OSPREYS AWAY
(22/11/07) Despite the heavy rain this week the pitch at Malltraeth has soaked up water like a sponge and is perfectly playable for Saturday's Under 17 fixture at home to Penrhosgarnedd. Kick-off is 10.30 am. The Under 13s are scheduled to be away to Llandegfan Leopards as are the Ospreys who have a good chance of a result against a team with a similar record. That game takes place on Sunday with an 11.00 am kick-off.
DECEMBER FIXTURES
(20/11/07) Under 13 and Under 17 fixtures have now been released for December by the Verdant Anglesey Junior League. Following their NWCFA Cup game at home to Denbigh Town on Saturday 1st December the Under 17s will be away to Llanfair Scarlets the following week and on Saturday 15th December visit Felinheli. The Under 13s travel to Holyhead Hotspur Peibio on 1st December followed by Bodedern home and Trearddur Bay Colts home on 15th December. There will be no fixtures on 22nd and 29th December.
LATE GOALS HARSH ON UNDER 9s
(18/11/07) The Under 9s lost 5-1 at Llanfair Siarcod this morning. Two nil down at the interval a goal from Jamie early in the second half gave Glantraeth hope but two late goals from the home side clinched victory. Although Llanfair passed the ball better and deserved their win the scoreline was harsh on a Glan side who worked hard although their final ball often let them down.
HOME DRAW FOR 17s
(18/11/07) In the Third Round of the North Wales Coast FA Cup Glantraeth Under 17s have been drawn at home to Denbigh Town Juniors. The tie is scheduled to be played Saturday 1st December. League fixtures for December are expected early this week.
1-1 OSPREYS
(17/11/07) The Ospreys met Llanfair Sbarcs on a bitterly cold morning with the game ending honours even. Cliff (pictured suffering from hypothermia) reckons Glan edged the game but had to be satisfied with a 1-1 draw. The Ospreys goal was scored by Dylan, aka 'Rooney.' The scheduled Red Dragons fixture was not played.
YOUNG 'UNS CENTRE STAGE
(15/11/07) Due to the Wales v Republic of Ireland Euro 2008 qualifier there are no Under 17 or Under 13 games on Saturday so it is the Under 11s and Under 9s who take centre stage. It has been confirmed that the Ospreys will be at home to Llanfair Sbarcs on Saturday, kick-off 11.30 am. The Red Dragons are scheduled to be at home to local rivals, Llanfair Hotshots, and the Under 9s are due to travel to face Llanfair Siarcod on Sunday.
GOOD WORKOUT FOR OSPREYS
(12/11/07) Without a league fixture over the weekend the Ospreys had a friendly with Llanfair Hotshots on Sunday morning that ended 1-1. Dave reports: Sion 'La una habil' , 'the skillful one' scored our goal after another good performance by the side. This could easilly have been double figures if only the finishing was on target. Every player did his duty today. Dion and Daniel figured highly for me and carried the game to Llanfair. The defence was mean but lost composure at times. Matthew on his debut acquitted himself well. A good soild performance but we missed 'El rapido,' 'the fast one' Gwern and 'El jovenes,'' the young ones.'
DRAGONS IN WINNING FORM
(11/11/07) Bojangles reports: From kick-off the boys ripped into Benllech time and time again with some great passing, wave after wave of attacks going up field towards the Benllech goal mainly through Jack on the right wing it was only going to be a matter of time before the Dragons found the net which they did after Iwan blasted a shot that the goalie could only parry out to the feet of Ryan who buried it into the back of the goal. Not long after the Dragons worked up the pitch again with Iwan taking a shot which hit the post and out, first to react was Ryan who again made no mistake by slotting the ball home taking the Dragons into half time 2-0 up. The second half started and the boys again as last week against Holyhead looked to ease off though Dion drilled the ball from long range and hit the bar and in 3-0 up, slowly Benllech started to string some attacks together with one of their players taking a long range shot that Carwyn struggled to deal with making it 3-1, the boys worked another up field move with Jamie steering in the fourth, then the Dragons had a bad 10 mins or so towards the end which saw them playing ragged football again they payed the price by not clearing resulting in an own goal. Final score: Dragons 4 Bro Benllech Moelfre Colts 2.
ARON LEADS WAY WITH THREE
(11/11/07) The Under 9s overcame Llewod Llangefni this afternoon by four goals to one in a sparkling exhibition with Aron celebrating with a hat-trick and Jamie also on target. Strong at the back with Owen and Daniel giving Cefni little sight of goal it was an excellent team performance that must have delighted Dyfed and Gareth. Thanks also to Karen for getting the refreshment caravan up and running for the first time, another useful fundraiser for the various teams as well as a source of sustinence on a cold day.
17s BACK TO WINNING WAYS
(10/11/07) Martyn reports: Glantraeth got back to winning ways away to a very competent Bontnewydd side. After the first 20 minutes all indications looked like another disappointing day for the boys with Bontnewydd passing and moving and piling on early pressure. On 25 minutes some slick passing finally saw Jason Edwards head the ball into the path of Matti Jones who coolly slotted it past the keeper. Bont still attacked and equalised on 30 minutes after a through ball left Carl Edwards on his own with 2 players to mark. Five minutes later Glantraeth were back in front when Ben Hull (pictured) caught a defender in possession, won the tackle and netted from just inside the penalty area. HT 1-2. Glantraeth came out in the second half and played like they finished the first and like they started the season, slick passing and attacking with pace. Ten minutes in and a through ball by Jamie Aston saw Matti Jones in again on the keeper to bag his sixth league goal of the season. Some good work down the left and Bont were in trouble again Matti Jones won the ball and passed to an unmarked Jamie Aston on the edge of the penalty area who drilled it past the keeper. The Manager ensured all players got a game and Glantraeth ran out worthy winners by four goals to one.
BRAVE EFFORT FROM UNDER 13s
(10/11/07) The Under 13s went out of the Coast Cup this morning, losing 6-2 to Penrhosgarnedd, but it could have been so different if they had taken their chances during a second period in which they put the visitors under tremendous pressure. Playing against the wind in the first half Glan were only losing to a 20th minute penalty approaching the interval but two late goals gave the visitors a three goal half-time advantage. Nathan Moore quickly pulled a goal back for Glan and they could easily have pulled level with the chances created but a fourth for Penrhosgarnedd just about sealed the tie. A late goal from Dafydd Harris made it 6-2.
13s LOOK TO MAKE PROGRESS
(08/11/07) Top billing this week goes to the Under 13s who entertain Penrhosgarnedd in the third round of the North Wales Coast FA Cup. Kick-off at Cae Cob is 10.30 am on Saturday. The Under 17s are at Bontnewydd, kick-off 10.30 am on Saturday. The Red Dragons travel to face Bro Benllech Moelfre Colts on Sunday, kick-off 1.00 pm. The Under 9s, now sponsored by Royal Mail, will be looking to deliver on Sunday when Llewod Llangefni will be the visitors. That game now kicks-off at 12.30 pm. The Ospreys with no league fixture have arranged a friendly at home to Llanfair Hotshots kick-off 11.30 am on Sunday.
COMMITTEE MEETING THURSDAY
(05/11/07) A reminder that there is a Juniors Club committee meeting at Ysgol Bodorgan next Thursday (8th November), 7.30 pm start.
GWERN'S GOAL NOT ENOUGH
(04/11/07) Dave reports Holyhead 2 Ospreys 1 in his own inimitable style: Ospreys arrived early for this encounter and were fortunate to see some of the Red Dragons game, and some of the players they'd be up against! Holyhead started at a high tempo thinking they could run through the Ospreys. Not so ....game on! Glan weathered the initial surge and started to cause Holyhead a few problems too. Pressure eventually paid off for Holyhead and Glan were one goal down at half time. In the second half Glan took the game to Holyhead more, losing their shape a little. It was after one of these forays that Holyhead regained possession and scored on the break. Glan soldiered on and Gwern Ap Rhobat slotted one in from close range after a good move up field. Glan had some good opportunities but the equaliser was just out of reach. 'El jovenes' Jamie and Marcus 'played well!'. Daniel, 'El Fuerte', good tackling, Gwern 'El rapido', 'deserved his goal'. Dion, ' El Capitan', in charge. John 'El Grande stood up in goal. Colin and Guto ' Los dos amigos', real stoppers..Sion 'La una habil' played his heart out..Good !
DRAGONS JUST EDGED OUT
(04/11/07) The Red Dragons lost out 3-2 at Holyhead this morning in a tremendous game that swung from end to end throughout. A draw would have been a fairer result as the Dragons twice hit the crossbar in the later stages through Cameron Owen and Jamie Roberts. Two first half goals within a minute from Osian Jones had given Glan the best possible start but the home side quickly pulled a goal back and then drew level early in the second half before taking the lead for the first time. Despite the Dragon's brave fightback they couldn't get the all important goal they deserved. Team photo now on Red Dragons page.
GLAN PAY FOR ERRORS
(03/11/07) A harsh scoreline for Glantraeth's Under 17s this morning as they went down 4-0 to Holyhead Peibio. The visitors were the better side in the first period and deservedly led by a goal at half-time but Glan were well on top after the break and looked to be heading for an equaliser only for two poor clearances to be punished by some slick finishing from Peibio that left the lads with a mountain to climb.
17s FACE LEAGUE LEADERS
(01/11/07)
Holyhead Hotspur Peibio Under 17s are the visitors to Cae Cob on Saturday for a game Glan need to win if they are to keep in touch with the visitors who have won every game. Kick-off is 11.30 am. The Red Dragons will be looking for a return to action at Holyhead Peibio. To date they have played two, won two, with no goals conceded. The Ospreys are also away to Holyhead. That game will be played at Holyhead Leisure Centre on Sunday, kick-off 11.00 am. To complete a series of games with Holyhead the Under 9s are due to be at home to Peibio this weekend (day/time to be confirmed). The Under 13s travel to Amlwch for a game put back from last week looking for their first league points.
MORE GROUND NEWS
(31/10/07) The caravan has now been moved to the ground that will be used for serving refreshments once connected to services. Whoever acquired it for next-to-nothing has played a blinder as it is perfect for the job.
SCORELINE TOUGH ON OSPREYS
(27/10/07) Dave reports Ospreys 0 Cefni Celts 3 - Another good display from the boys saw them run Cefni close. The score flattered Cefni as Glan had a good part of this game matching Cefni in most departments. The first goal came after 17 minutes which Cefni deserved following several late attacks. The boys came in for half time having battled for every inch of the pitch unable to take advantage of their opportunities. In the second half Dion Williams was strong and passing well and Gwern ran for miles. Dion was behind many attacks as he orchestrated events in midfield. Glan were passing well and got into some good positions but failed to get the last strike on goal. At one point I thought an equaliser was on the cards as the Cefni goal area became a 'Pin Ball Machine'. Glan were always vulnerable to the counter attacks as they pressed for an equaliser. The 2nd goal came as our goalie allowed a bouncing ball to spill. A Cefni player was quick to find the net. It was disheartening to concede from an error rather than good play. Glan frustrated Cefni as they refused to roll over and kept playing some decent football. Tempers flared as Cefni came in with some heavy challenges. Some changes were made which ultimately resulted in Glan conceding a soft third. Ospreys are becoming more streetwise and the team are managing their game better. Simple mistakes and wrong options are creeping into play less. Remember the 3 C's..Controlled aggression, Concentration, Communication. Quote 'A hard run for six may save another a run of sixty' - Ron Atkinson.
WEEKEND PREVIEW
(25/10/07) Local derby games with Llangefni dominate the weekend fixtures although the Red Dragons game at home to Llangefni Juniors has been cancelled. The Ospreys are at home to Cefni Celts on Saturday, kick-off 11.00 am, when anyone who hasn't played so far will get an opportunity to be included in this fixture. The Under 9s are away to Llangefni Juniors on Saturday, kick-off 2.00 pm at Ysgol Corn Hir. The Under 17s were due to play Blaenau Ffestiniog on Glantraeth's main pitch in the NW Coast Cup but their opponents have withdrawn so Glan get a walkover into the third round. The Under 13 fixture has also been cancelled as their opponents Amlwch have asked for a free date. In the third round of the Under 13 NWCFA Cup the Under 13s have another home tie when CPB Penrhosgarnedd B will be the vistors to Malltraeth on Saturday 10th November. Next month's fixtures for the Under 17s and Under 13s are now online.
SHOCK DEFEAT FOR 17s
(24/10/07) The Under 17s went down to a surprise 2-1 defeat this evening to Cae Glyn at Caernarfon Town's Oval ground. Matti Jones gave Glantraeth the lead on 27 minutes as he reacted quickly to steal in and head home but two goals in two minutes put the home side ahead as they shaded the first period. Three minutes after the break Matti Jones had a penalty saved and despite constant second half pressure and several near misses Glan could not draw level as a determined Cae Glyn defence held on for the points.
UNDER 17s AT THE OVAL
(23/10/07) Glantraeth Under 17s are away to Cae Glyn tomorrow evening (Wednesday) in a league fixture put back from last Saturday. The game is being played at Caernarfon Town's Oval ground kick-off 6.30 pm.
UNDER 9s WANTED
(22/10/07) We need some more under 9 players to join the club. At present the squad is a little too large for one team but three or four short of making up two teams and resurrecting the Colts. Anyone wanting their youngster to join the club should phone Dyfed on 01248 371781 as soon as possible. In other weekend games the Under 13s went down 7-2 to Llanfair Swifts while the Under 9s won 7-2 in a friendly with Valley after their scheduled game with Trearddur Bay Cubs was cancelled.
OSPREYS CELEBRATING VICTORY
(20/10/07) Dave reports: The match conditions were unlike any in the league. Tiny goals and a massive pitch made it difficult for Glantraeth to press home their superiority. Saying that, It was the same for both sides and to be fair to Valley they were generous hosts and made it a close contest. A win was a fair result for Glantraeth who managed to keep the effort and concentration going until the final whistle. Cliff and myself are pleased the boys recorded a victory after putting in so much effort. It was Sion Thomas who finally broke Valleys' hearts 10 minutes from the end, blasting in from close range. There was no coming back for Valley after the goal as the Glan boys froze them out. There was real cause for celebration and the bubbly was flowing....well a bottle of Cola all round!!!
BODED OUTPLAYED BY DRAGONS
(20/10/07) Bojangles reports: The Red Dragons game against Boded this morning proved good to watch, the Reds weren't as flowing as in the Tigers game but for me were still the better footballing side today, they had by far the more chances and should have been a couple up if not more by half time not the 0-0 score line that took them to the break, Boded's best chance in the game came from a shot outside the box which was saved well by Carwyn and pushed over the crossbar, The Reds grew stronger into the second half and were rewarded with a well taken goal from Iwan who calmly slotted the ball into the Boded net, closely followed by some good build up play ending in a well taken goal by Ryan, one or two Reds players had a quiet game this week but having said that there were some that really worked hard all game, which brings me to the third goal and my man of the match Dion who was tireless in his work for the team today and deserved his goal, a good team performance all round well played also to Aled in defence who kept the back strong when Boded attacked.
LATEST GROUND NEWS
(19/10/07) The portakabin has been moved to its final resting place by the main gate and work will now be ongoing to carry out the internal modifications required to provide changing accommodation for players and officials. A small caravan has also been acquired for the ground which when connected to services will provide refreshments on matchdays. There's no doubt that when all the work on the ground is completed we will have a fabulous facility for our junior club.
CAN OSPREYS DO IT ?
