CRICHTON SURVIVES LONGER THAN SIR MUIR
Having unsuccessfully sought the closure of the Crichton Campus of the University of Glasgow in Dumfries, and was forced to backtrack thanks to local pressure, Sir Muir Russell, the Principal of Glasgow University has, according to The Herald newspaper (28.06.08) announced he will step down in September 2009.
Sir Muir who complained that the 2.9% increase in university funding from the Scottish government is insufficient, and threatened to bring in student fees or cut educational services even further. However, despite such harsh budgetting, which resulted in cutbacks in teaching and research, he raised his own salary by a mere 17% to brings his modest salary to just £237,000. He will also be receiving, on retirement, a pay off £215,000 and a pension for life of £65,000 (on top of his civil service pension - he was the man responsible for the third of a billion pound overspend on the Scottish Parliament building).
At the same time as Sir Muir takes a well-deserved retirement the University of Glasgow at the Crichton Campus in Dumfries, welcomes in its first new intake of students since Sir Muir Russell foiled closure attempts. The Crichton Campus is currently one of the few parts of the University of Glasgow with a future secured for the foreseeable future.
