The 36th ulster division was created in 1914 from battalion`s of the royal irish rifles, the royal irish fusilier`s and the royal inniskilling fusilier`s.
The recruite`s were  almost wholly drawn up from sir Edward Carson`s, ulster volunteer force.

The original flag of the division , was plain red with the free edge ending in a swallow tail of two point`s. Later in the war in 1916 a distinctive badge was added to the flag. This was to be a red hand on a khaki shield which was placed in the centre of the flag.

To this day , having visited the national army museum in london and the ulster museum i was saddened to discover that there is no surviving flags.
