HOW THE HEART ORNAMENT IS MADE

Step 1: PREPARING THE ROD
Before Mahmoud can begin blowing, he must
get the glass in a form that he can work with.
STEP 2: SHORTENING THE ROD
After 5 minutes or so, of direct
heat applied to the tube, the
glass softens and becomes like taffy. Now
that he has his rod, he can begin blowing.
STEP 3: BLOWING
With a few carefully applied
puffs of air, the rod now has
expanded into the shape of a heart.
STEP 4: REFINING THE SHAPE
Mahmoud doesn't just use
his mouth to create this ornament, he
also has to be very skilled
with his hands. With lots
of subtle twists and turns of the
wrist, he is able to refine the
heart's shape.
STEP 5: ADDING THE HOOK
To make this heart a heart
ornament, Mahmoud must add a glass
hook to it. By applying heat to
the glass, he is able to fuse
the two pieces of glass together.
STEP 6: PAINTING
Now that the ornament is cooled, it
is ready to be painted by Mustafa.
STEP 7: BAKING
Now that paint has been applied,
the ornament is ready for the oven.
It will stay in here for up to
2 hours and will visit the oven
a second time if there is
any gold paint on the ornament or
bottle.
STEP 8: THE FINISHED PRODUCT
Now that the creative birthing
process of the heart is finished,
the ornament is now ready
to leave our precious hands
and join the ranks of your most
treasured objects....
