This is the medal that is given for twenty years service in Emergency Medical Services (EMS). This medal recognizes that EMS is a hard field of employment, comparable to police and the other emergency services. Few work on ambulance for a full twenty years, however, the minimum time on ambulance is ten years, with another ten years required in administrative duties, etc. I now have over twenty years working on ambulance. It has been awarded; however, it still has not been directly presented because I was away travelling the world when the awards event occured! The medal is in my posession now, haveing been handed to me by a secretary. It was not presented in the format expected by the College of Paramedics (see link below - ACP News). Good friends have offered to have it offically presented, since the City of Edmonton ERD - EMS failed in their tasking; however, my other first ones have arrived "through the mail" thus it is not that great of a matter to me, and besides, one should always have intresting stories to tell. The secretary did offer to "pin it on;" however, that would simply add more insult to the injustice!

I am a EMT-Paramedic working in the EMS Branch of the Emergency Response Department of the City of Edmonton. I realize how hard it is to work in this area, thus I have started to undertake Nursing courses from Excelsior College, and have created my own web pages for my notes.
I also instruct on an irregular basis for one of the local private colleges, the Canadian College of EMS.
The ambulances are regular modular types, with all the standard EMS equipment. The service has gone through many changes over the years, and although things have improved, there is still a long way to go. Over the years I had been very active in the union, which has been the major organization fighting for improvement of emergency care in the City of Edmonton. No longer am I an officer in the union, although I partake in normal duties, as required.
Ambulances are currently being replaced by full size modular types, which allow me to stand full erect in the back. We use LP12s, and were participating in a multi city/multi copuntry study in the use of thrombolitics. Hopefully we will be able to again give thrombolitics in the field, for time is muscle!
I also flew on the fixed wing air ambulance out of Edmonton. I borrowed these images from John, who flew with me on this flight to Hinton. As often occurs, the flight ends up being for a more difficult patient than was expected. We were going for a stable patient, then had the patient changed for another who was unstable, intubated, etc. Challenging work.
John started me on web pages, and his family history is very interesting. John receintly received a Queen's Jubilee Medal.
