Thoughts on actions by McDonalds workers | |||||||||||
We do not see the events of October 16th as an end in themselves, the point of local self controlled workers' organisations is not to generate an internationally co-ordinated day of action- the point of an internationally co-ordinated day of action is to generate local self-controlled workers' organisations. On October 16th we hope we will see forward looking actions that concentrate on building the confidence and ability of McDonalds workers to take control over areas of our lives that have always been dictated to us. If October 16th is a crescendo to our nascent rebellion that leaves our networks of resistance repressed or burned out then it will have been a failure. But if it is succesful, October 16th will increase the strengths of our networks, increase our numbers, our influence and our confidence. So, the sort of actions that we think will be most effective are those that inspire or inform workers of McDonalds and other corporations regarding the possibility and potential of direct action (just means stuff we do ourselves, rather than through the boss/ politician/ trade union leader, etc.) at work. So to hand out information about MWR or other resistance to your workmates is, at any time, an important act, if it's done on October 16th and linked to similar acts around the world it's also inspiring, if it's accompanied by some disruption of th eproductive process, then even more so. Talking to your workmates, encouraging them to work slowly, phone in sick or disrupt the productive process some other way is perhaps more positive than a dramatic one off act that just gets you fired. By 'disrupting the productive process' we just mean anything that prevents teh smooth operating of McDonalds profit machine. Since we produce all McDonalds profit, we are spoiled for choice when it comes to disrupting the productive process and for possible October 16th actions. Just a few ideas people have come up with... Go on strike, block the plumbing, phone in sick, leaflet your workmates, work slowly, work clumsily and stupidly, give food away for free, defrost food, sabotage equipment, steal stuff, write mwr.org.uk (or similar) on the walls of the crew room, put up posters in staff areas, stop work for a set period of time, insist upon democratic decision making for the day, hide keys to locked areas, hold a meeting with some workmates to discuss issues at your store... use your imagination, get as many people invloved as possible and please tell us about it on Ocotber 16th as soon as you possibly can, by e-mailing both: reports@mwr.org.uk and globaldayofaction@yahoo.co.uk , or by phoning: 0000000000000000 Being part of O16 needn't jeapordise your employment, but if you think the sort of thing you are going to do might possibly risk dismissal, then remember to get any money the company owes you, like holiday pay, paid through before October 16th. Finally, if October 16th is a protest, we hope it will also be a celebration of our new found unity, internationalism and rebellion. So use the excuse to get together with your workmates and have a few drinks, bongs, cups of coffee... Make friends in kitchen, make trouble on tills and make love in the stockroom ;) Enjoy more! |
