Alchemist “Lunasphere” Thrust, 1994 Gloon: It is hard to catagorise these Aussie metallers but psychodelic, thrashend death comes somewhere close to the mark. This original brand of metal is complimented by a very unusual combination of throaty yells and Daniesque squeals. Variety and uniqueness are the order of the day as Alchemist switch between black metal blast beats ‘Lunation’ and bizarre trippy psychodelica ‘Yoni Kunda’. Samples and Keyboards are used to good effect and with a splash of Oriental and Arabic guitars the music created is nothing short of amazing (check out the Dr Who riff in ‘Lunation’ ripper). The album at first may seem a little unfocused, however after the initial adjustments in mindset are changed this cut can be very rewarding. The only trouble is Alchemist can get a little carried away and lose the listener as they go off on their Mr Bungle tangents with some very unorthodox time changes. There is nothing more I can really say, people who are into Sigh, Orphaned Land or even Bal Sagoth should most definitely check them out, you won’t be disappointed.
