Angel Corpse - The Inexorable Osmose, 1999 Gloon: From the opening assault of 'Stormgods Unbound' two words come to mind. Morbid Angel. In fact Angel Corpse make no secret of their Morbid Angel admiration in magazine interviews as well as their music, however AC are well removed from the standard of imagination of their idols. Though The Inexorable bleeds technicality, brutality and speed in equal amounts, it fails to capture or conquer any new ground. The musicianship though high just covers well-trodden ground with the repetition of riffs used sounding awfully familiar and old. The vocals are also one-dimensional and are more associated with the Blackmetal rasp than the traditional low guttural growls we usually distinguish with the genre. With the little varied vocals and unorthodox song writing, choruses pass you by and listening to the album as a whole can become tiring. That this is their 3rd-4th album is also a worry with bands usually coming into their own and shaping their own identity by this stage in their careers. I don't doubt that some death metallers out there will hail this album as a return to the faster, brutal days of death, but I remain unimpressed. If you like your Death Metal fast and furious I suggest you check out Hate Eternal instead, The Inexorable just misses the mark.
