Bloodbath - Breeding Death Century Media, 2000 Gloon: Formed as a tribute to when illegible logos, gory artwork, chunky riffs and guttural growls were the shit, Bloodbath's moto is BRUTALITY COMES THROUGH SIMPLICITY. With members like Mikael from Opeth; Anders and Jonas from Katatonia and Dan Swano from Edge of Sanity and others, this was always going to be special. This smacks of when the scene first spewed Death Metal to the masses, heavy, bass driven, and totally fucking brutal. The boys do a great job of keeping the feel of the early days without having resort to rip offs and shit production. Pitty its only a 3 song EP, however there are now rumours of a full length sometime this year (2002). Pure sing-a-long groove driven gore metal, simple as that! Favourite Songs - All Rating - 8/10 Bloodbath ‘Resurrection Through Carnage’ Century Media, 2002 Gloon: How to make the ultimate Swedish Death album, Step 1. Take the template laid down by Grave and the dirty bass sound from Entombed Step 2. Keep things simple focus on groove over speed and catchy song writing over brutality Step 3 Assemble the most talented group of death obsessed musios from across the metal spectrum. The result quite simply is Bloodbath. Oozing with all the old school attributes and magic that made their 3 track EP such an unlikely classic, the mismatch super group finally deliver the hordes a full length of straight up, in yer face, death fucking metal. Pumping out hardly original but highly memorable Swedish Death ‘Resurrection Through Carnage’ meshes brutality, groove and cheesy spookiness to create a sort of belated throwback classic slash tribute to all that came before and all who come after. This may come as a disappointment to followers of the members fulltime bands, more known for there expansion and evolution in the metal community but this isn’t about pushing the envelope this is about stripping death metal back to its core roots and working within the original parameters of what the genre use to be all about. The result quite purely is perfection, want to remember what got you into death metal in the first place all those years ago? spin the disk now and let it all flood back. Favourite Tracks – Ways to the Grave, Death Delirium, Cry My Name Rating – 8/10 Bloodbath ‘Nightmares Made Flesh’ Century Media, 2004 Gloon: After making a Swedish Death classic Mikael Akerfeldt decided hes work in Bloodbath was done, question is how do you replace a metal icon and death metal growler supreme? Easy you enroll the services of another one, welcome Peter Tägtgren. Nightmares….. sees the band essentially morph into a more serious, brutal outfit and evolve a little away from the whole totally old school groove approach into more blast beat, scathing speed territory. While still having that signature Bloodbath sound and song writing approach (Outnumbering the Day could have easily been lifted from their last release), the rumble is now more of a shred and the tempo is more hectic than bludgeoning. This can be attributed to Swano’s move from drums to six string and Peter’s different approach to the vocals, which are a major highlight of the album. Theres also a little more variation on offer such as the blistering of ‘Soul Evisceration’ and the doomy atmospheric ‘Ascension’. Overall a great follow up album allowing a little evolution and progression while staying true to the original concept, killer stuff. Favourite Tracks – Brave New Hell, Out Numbering the Day, Draped in Disease Rating – 8/10 |
