Dissection 'The Somberlain' No Fashion, 1993 Tyrant: Dissection play Swedish melodic blackened deathmetal and are one of the finest underground bands to emerge from the scene. The Somberlain is adorned with Necrolord cover art, engineering from Dan Swano, and an album dedication to Euronymus, showing off their scene credibility nicely. Dissection play semi technical fast to mid paced deathmetal melodicism with acoustic passages, lots of tempo and timing changes, passionate lighter riff sections, and some of the best song writing to emerge so early in the development of this style of music to date. The most unique thing about Dissection is their ability to write emotive riffs where the guitar takes the listener into the frame of mind of the song, this style crops up in a few of the tracks on The Somberlain and helps to involve the listener in the music. Lyrically Dissection are also ahead of the pack with intelligent poetic lyrics sung in a distinctive blackmetal rasp by lead guitarist/vocalist Jon Nodtveidt. My only gripe is the slight lack of consistency, as the first few tracks are lengthy epics, whilst some of the latter tracks aren't up to the same high standard. Overall high calibre original melodic death from an intriguing band. Favourite Tracks - The Somberlain , A Land Forlorn , Black Horizons Mark - 7.5/10 Dissection 'Storm Of The Lights Bane' Nuclear Blast, 1995 Tyrant: Dissection return to dominate the scene with their second album of Swedish melodic death metal. Another excellent Necrolord work of art adorns the cover and the inlay booklet is superbly presented to suit the music. SOTLB is essentially the same brand of speedy death as found on The Somberlain but a little faster, catchier, and alot more consistent. The emotive riffing is still there ( Where Dead Angels Lie ) but less abundant this time around but the quality of the song writing has improved and the album has more hooks and chorus' than before. Lyrically Dissection have also improved with a more refined take on the same breed of dark poetry that The Somberlain displayed. New rhythm guitarist Johan Norman is a great replacement and keeps up with Jon admirably. Guest vocalist IT ( Abruptum/Ophthalamia ) provides some backing vocals on the killer track 'Soulreaper' which is one of my innumerable favourites on the album. Storm Of The Lights Bane is a near on perfect album with no filler tracks, all the songs are brilliant, whilst still retaining a strong underground feeling. Unfortunately due to incarceration of Jon Nodtveidt ( guitar/vocals ) for shooting a homosexual a new Dissection album is a long way from ever being released. A masterpiece. Favourite Tracks - Where Dead Angels Lie ; Retribution - Storm Of The Lights Bane ; Soulreaper Mark - 9/10 Dissection 'Reinkaos' The End, 2006 Tyrant: The much anticipated return of Dissection proves to be worth the wait. Those expecting Storm Of The Lights Bane Pt 2 need not read any further as Reinkaos is a slower more melodic and sometimes even rocky beast. Gone are the blastbeats of old replaced with strongly composed mid paced modern catchy melodic death metal tracks that still retain all of the features of a Dissection song like multilayer riffs and acoustic passages but with a cleaner crisp production. A number of new additions to the Dissection sound arise like chanted passages 'Dark Mother Divine'/'God Of Forbidden Light', exotic female vocals 'Maha Kali', throbbing stagger riffing 'God Of Forbidden Light' adding a new layer of depth that was needed to fill out the lower tempo tracks. Lyrically the album reaches in new directions whilst retaining satanic themes 'God Of Forbidden Light'/'Internal Fire', Reinkaos also embraces other dark/rebellious entities like Lilith 'Dark Mother Divine', Egyptian deities 'Xeper-I-Set' and Kali 'Maha Kali' as well as dark cosmic forces. Reinkaos is a well paced and consistent album and would be comparable to Satyricon's volcano relative to their own back catalogue - a modern, slower, catchier release that retains all the elements of what made the band great whilst presenting them in a new streamlined format. Favourite Tracks - Starless Aeon ; God Of Forbidden Light ; Beyond The Horizon Mark - 8/10 |
