Enochian Crescent 'Telocvovim' Woodcut , 1997 Lord Pale : Okay , I got hold of this after hearing the bands newer material , but it is clear to see a logical prigression from 'Telocvovim' through to 'Omega Telocvovim' . Mainly consisting of chunky chord riffs , with occasional melodic overalys , the guitar work isn't as proficent or well written as the later releases but is still able and varied with occasional acoustic breaks and trippy riff leads . Vocally , Telocvovim is rather expansive , generally the rough black rasps dominant but interspersed amongst them are a variety of other styles like deeper clean vocals , deathy vocals ala Covenant's 'In Times Before The Light' , and a mixture of the rougher snat with clean thrashy vocals . Some choir synth appears very breifly in a couple of tracks , but the keyboards are never very abundant and not used to lead tracks more as a distraction . This is definately primitive blackmetal , not in the vein of 'Transilvanian Hunger' , but more so like scathing releases like Khold with a more modern sound . The drumming is fairly simplistic but suited to the music , occassionally reaching a slow blastbeat tempo , but never breaking any speed or technicality records , however thats not the point here . Overall a worthy debut , and one for the collectors . 'Babalon...' is the bands second release, and second part of the Telocvovim saga, this time in the form of a five track mini cd. Featuring a cover of Bathory's 'Thirteen Candles’; 'A Mathilde’, a satanic poem turned into a song; and three other new tracks. The bands vocalist Wrath spews forth-satanic lyrical mayhem in a sickly rasp with occasional deathy growl and even a touch of clean singing in ‘Mortiferum’. The guitar work here is mainly heavy and mid paced with occasional touches of melodic riffery for chorus' and breaks, however they have broken away from the mold set by other Finnish melodic bands and instead sound more akin to the lighter moments in Dissection rather than the gay bombast of Children of Bodom. Drummer Genesis also has a good ear for a decent beat and uses double kicks and slower parts to help the flow of the music without relying on blastbeats and technicality. Overall a great release from an upcoming band. Enochain Crescent descends upon us again with their brutal form of mid paced, heavy and insane blackmetal. This time the lyrics are sicker, the music is more aggressive and the melodic passages are even weirder (see Vakisinkastettu's twin layered guitar intro). Omega Telocvovim weaves a sick satanic atmosphere without the use of keyboards or samples, instead it hammers the listener with pounding drums and thrashing riffs combined with a variety of unhealthy sounding blackmetal vocals combined with clean vocals in various forms from chants to verse singing. With a full album some comparisons can be made more easily, 'Grey Skin' sounds like Agathodaimon, with clean/rasping vocal changes over and acoustic build ups, whilst 'Tis The Sound Of The Tepest That Drowns Us Out' starts off with a riff that sounds surprisingly like Borknagar with rasping vocals that switches to a clean vocal fade out. The greatest thing about Omega Telocvovim is its psychotic lyrics; they paint vivid images in the listener’s mind of twisted dementia and blood. Switching between English and Scandinavian lyrics mid song on occasions is also reminiscent of Agathodaimon, but for all the comparisons I can make Enochain Crescent have their own unique sound and that's the great thing about them ... excellent.
