Godkiller ‘The End Of The World’ Wounded Love , 1998 Lord Pale : Godkiller’s second album moves away from their medieval blackmetal roots into a harsh realm of atmospheric metal . The blackmetal vocals remain and menacingly rasp the rather doomy lyrics accompanied by some rare clean vocals and spoken passages . The riffs are mid paced , heavy and crunchy akin to Samael’s ‘Passage’ but where Samael are spacey and cosmic Godkiller are ominous and dark . The keyboards add to the atmosphere with twinkling pianos , broad sweeping parts , choir synth , samples , and church bell chimes complimenting the gloomy aggression perfectly . The production job highlights all the instruments well although intentionally a little raw to get the right feel and the mix is also very good . Enough variation is presented from the techno style themes of ‘Down Under Ground’ to the slower feel of ‘Nothing Left But Silence’ to the clean vocalled ‘De Profundis’ whilst retaining a consistent feel and emotion . I really got into The End Of The World for its unique style and atmosphere but some may find it to be a little too repetitive . Overall a well thought out original release for fans of dark music . Gone is the fuzzy production of yore , and in its place is a crisp clean sound , and gone are the snarling blackened rasps and in their place are some clean vocals that sound a little poor at first but take time to get used to . Utilising huge chunky metal riffs and combining them with samples , soft core techno keyboards , and abrasive synth , Duke has managed to make a Godkiller album that would play half bad in a metal dance club . There is a huge mosh element to the more uptempo tracks , but occasionally the songs slow to harsher more serious realms whilst still retaining a good beat . Lyrically Deliverance is a gem , with Duke having strung together whole songs worth of dark and cheekily manipulated ( though not changed ) bible quotes , that when combined form a suicidal and hopeless atmosphere . Deliverance's newer artwork also backs this theme up with blood running down a sink in a more modern looking package . Deliverance is sure to capture some new fans for Godkiller , but I feel that with the lack of extremity in places and a general more commercial theme , they are bound to lose as many as they gain . A good album . Favourite Tracks - For My Days Are Vanity , Nothing Is Sacred , At Dusk Mark - 7.5/10 |
