Khold  'Masterpiss Of Pain'
Moonfog , 2001
Lord Pale :
Moonfog's newest signing Khold turn out to be an old school styled slow and at times rocky blackmetal band . Masterpiss Of Pain skips all the keyboards and gimmicks and just produces cold straight up blackmetal sung in their native Norweigen tongue . Khold have a general beat through their music similar to Darkthrone's latter material , a rocky yet harsh and crushing sound with thick sludgey bass sound that pounds along with the rhythms . Theres not much in the way of catchy chorus' or song structuring to be found here , just ten pieces of grating , no frills blackmetal . Khold's general tempo is slow to mid paced with vocals similar to Nocturno Culto's , a rasping drawl that pervades the music . A few surprises come up , 'Svart Helligdom' starts with an off tempo riff and guitar tuning that is reminscent of Ved Buens Ende , and a few timing changes grab the attention throughout Masterpiss' course , especially the slow crawling bassy intro to 'Bortvandring' . Overall an entertaining album that should hold the attention of most blackmetallers , and a refreshing change from symphonic blackmetal which quite frankly has nearly exhausted all of its options .

Khold  'Phantom'
Moonfog , 2002
Lord Pale :
Norweigen blackmetallers Khold's second album Phantom displays a number of interesting tricks and a new slicker production . Combining rocky riffs and simple drum beats Khold manage to put together a rather interesting album of stripped back slow blackmetal retaining enough familiar elements to get your mind working but I was unable to pin down where I had heard alot of the music before . Some tracks are easier , 'Fra Grav Til Moke' is straight forward Judas Iscariot praise , whilst 'Dodens Grode' has a distinctive Satyricon/Thorns edge on the riffing . Alot more tempo's and style variations encroach uopn Phantom's attack making it an album that is much easier to sit all the way through than Masterpiss Of Pain was . The lyrics are still growled out in archaic Norweigen but this time Moonfog have provided the English traslations to the track titles giving the tracks more personality to the English speaking listener . If you liked the original then it is definately worth picking up Phantom , not as harsh , but certainly more professional .

Khold 'Morke Gravers Kammer'
Candlelight, 2004
Lord Pale:
Khold's third album ( released on new label Candlelight ) see's the Norwegians remaining true to their roots with mid paced, simplistic, catchy blackmetal tracks performed in an arcaic form of their native dialect. Apart from dropping the noticable 'Moonfog' sounding production the band hasn't changed a bit and Morke Gravers Kammer features the same riffing and vocal style of the first two Khold albums. The stripped down cover art and band photography has also been retained similar to the blueprints laid by both Materpiss Of Pain and Phantom. I must say that I am both pleased and dissapointed by the bands lack of progression, on first listen I got just what I was expecting ( with the exception of 'Opera Seria' ), but upon closer listening I started to hear some very familiar riff and vocal lines ( very blatantly at times ) which was bound to happen when a band sticks to a single tempo and style across the span of three albums. All gripes aside however I would have to say that Morke Gravers Kammer is the bands best work to date. Khold seem to be continually refining thier sound ( and at times rehashing it in better forms ) and the best and their new album is the best and latest result. If you're a new comer to Khold then start here, if you're a fan you'll like it, if you're a casual listener, just go and put Phantom on and pretend you've got the new album.
