Bates Motel ‘Deux Ex Machina’
Self Released, 2002
Gloon:
Hailing from the Motherland, Bates Motel are a four-piece metal act aiming to put England back on the metal map. Blending elements of grunge, hard rock and traditional metal Bates Hotel create a sound and style which is both gripping and immediately grabbing. ‘Cease and Desist’ is a catchy little number which is sure to be a radio favourite, and while displaying some minor Nu Metal tendencies still manages to stay true to the band’s traditional metal blueprint. Next comes the Sabbath fest of ‘Sludgefuckers’, a great rockin cut with powerful vocals and some great lead work courtesy of Mr Readhead and Mr McDonaugh. ‘Lost My Way’ features some almost Helmet like riffing and structuring with a great chorus and build up, while closer ‘Regression’ continues in this fashion with a slower more haunting feel. Bates Motel have managed to cover a lot of ground on this four track mini, showcasing their songwriting abilities and genre blending to the fullest. The end result is a modern sounding slab of heavy metal with mainstream potential, a more than solid debut.
