Ebony Lake ‘On The Eve Of The Grimly Inventive’
Cacophonous , 1999
Lord Pale :
Schizophrenic Norwegian darkmetal inspired by the consumption of Absinth sound appealing ? Then Ebony Lake is what you are looking for . Initially On The Eve Of The Grimly Inventive sounds like a mess , but the more one listens , the more structure can be seen amidst the chaos . Vocalist Aphelion’s range varies from blackened rasps , to deathy growls , to paranoid spoken narrative , to clean vocals , whilst female vocalist Amber occasionally sings in a variety of deranged but can definitely hold a melody . Back to the music . Heavy deathmetal riffs churn in varying tempo’s ( which constantly shift ) as piano and synth passages do their own thing seemingly over the top . Drum rhythms usually follows the guitar work but also wanders on its own path when it feels like it . Psychotic lyrics all based in an older time suit the theme of the artwork and the band who dress in the appropriate period costume . Overall a slightly warped but entertaining voyage into insanity .
