Augustus Edward, or Gus Deaton's ancestors arrived in Virginia in 1701 from England. The Deaton Coat of Arms is one of the oldest in England, dating from before 1,000 A.D. It was designed before metal shields came into use, as a wooden shield to be covered with rabbit fir with one wide red stripe across the center.
