From 1973-1977, Betty starred as a recurring character on the hit series The Mary Tyler Moore Show as the spunky, sharp-tongued, man-trap, Sue Anne Nivens. Nivens, who hosted a household hints show, became known as television's Happy Homemaker. Betty was cast on MTM after the producers of the show decided to cast a new character--someone who was an "icky-sweet Betty White type." After twelve actresses read for the part, one of the producers finally decided to call Betty herself (who, actually, was already good friends with Mary Tyler Moore). Betty won Emmy awards two consecutive years for her portrayal of Sue Anne Nivens, in 1975 and 1976. |
