In 1773 a new county was created from the northeastern section of Baltimore County and was named after the Lord Proprietor of the Province which, at the time, was Henry Harford. On March 22, 1774 Henry Harford established government officials in the county and commissioned Thomas Miller as the first Sheriff of Harford County Maryland. The duties of the Sheriff were to maintain law and order throughout the county and protect the rights and dignity of all it’s citizens. The Basic duties of today’s Sheriff have stayed the same throughout the years although many of the Sheriff’s other responsibilities have been constantly evolving to meet the needs of today’s citizens of Harford County. The Harford County Sheriff’s Office has grown to be the largest Sheriff’s Office in Maryland and Harford County’s primary law enforcement agency, covering an area of 448 square miles while always maintaining the values of Courage, Honor, and Integrity. |
