TCG: Basic Rules
You and your opponent are wizards duelling at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Many spells and magical creatures you play will 'damage' your opponent, which means your opponent has to discard cards from his or her deck.
You win the game the instant your opponent's deck runs out of cards.
Before You Play -
Gather your deck, or if you have the Two-Player Starter Pack: pick which deck you want.
- Put your Wizard or Witch card in the 'Wizard/Witch' spot.
- Shuffle your deck and put it in the 'Deck' spot.
- Draw 7 cards for your starting hand.
- Decide who goes first.
Steps of Your Turn
Step 1. Draw a card from your deck and put it into your hand.
Do this first every turn!
Step 2. Damage your opponent with your Creatures that are already on the table. (Don't worry about this on your first turn -- you won't have any Creatures on the table yet.)
Step 3. You have 2 Actions.
You can use an Action to: -
Play a Lesson card; or
- Play a Creature card (you'll need enough Lesson cards on the table); or
- Play a Spell card (you'll need enough Lesson cards on the table); or
- Draw an extra card.
You can do the same Action twice instead of doing two different Actions.
still confused? lemme explain.
there are six types of cards: lesson card, creature cards, adventure cards, item cards, spell cards, and character cards. But, we won't get into item & adventure cards yet; they are for the advanced game.
CREATURE CARDS
The object of the game is to make your opponents deck run of cards. How do you make them run of cards? You use creature cards. On every creature card there is a little box that says:
Damage Each Turn: (then a number, for example 1)
Health: (then a number, for example 3)
The damage each turn means how many cards your opponent must throw away on YOUR next turn. The health means how much damage the creature can take before it can be discarded (this will be explained in more detail later). Take note that creatures CANNOT damage other creature cards. Also, on the corner of every creature card, there will be a number surrounded by either a paw print, butterfly, potion cauldron, or a blue heart. This indicates how many lesson cards it needs to "power the creature". So, you MUST have lesson cards down in order to play creature cards.
LESSON CARDS
there are four types of lesson cards: Care of Magical Creatures (brown pawprint), Transfiguration (pink butterfly), Charms (blue heart), Potions (green cauldron). On the corner of the creature card is a number surrounded by one of these symbols. In order to play the card (that needs 3 cauldrons, for example) you must have 3 lesson cards down, and one of the three MUST be a Potions Lesson. You can never "use up" the power of Lesson Cards.
SPELL CARDS
So if Creatures cannot damage other Creatures, than how can you kill creatures? Easy, you use Spell Cards. To play a Spell card, show it to your opponent, do what it says and put it in your discard pile. Spell cards don't stay on the table like the other cards do. But they still need a certain amount of "power" from lesson cards to be played. You follow the rules of the Spell that are written on the card.
CHARACTER CARDS
These are your witch/wizard cards that were talked about at the top of the page. They are the person that represents you during the game. They are NEVER removed from play. The Starting Character (the one that you ARE) has a special quality. For example, the Hermione card allows you to *after you have already put down two lesson cards* lets you put down two lesson cards for the price of ONE action. Cool, huh? But beware, it MUST say Witch or Wizard at the top of the card to be the starting character. The Hagrid Card is a character card, but not a witch or wizard, so he can only be played in the deck and NOT as the starting card.
Now you understand the basic game. You can play a few games now and not be totally confused. I would suggest buying the two-player started pack, and playing on the playmat until you get the hang of it.
- Advanced Rules - After you have read the Basic Rules, more indepth, for people who are not beginners. "The finer points of the game" so to speak.
- List of Cards - A list of all of the current cards in the game
- Pictures - Scans of some of the cards I have (to give you a better idea of the game).
