| The Math of Twins The numbers reach enormous heights The math becomes outrageous I start to count and soon I find the tallying contagious Two hungry mouths, two runny noses This little piggy on twenty toes Four sticky hands, that's twenty fingers On chairs and walls banana lingers. Before our walk I scrub two faces Snap-zip-button and tie four laces After their bath, I trim forty nails And two-fold are their angry wails. Medicine three times each day For ear infections held at bay Will add up to sixty teasppons Force-fed morning, nights and noons. I can't begin to count the teeth The ones on top, the one beneath Or nights I learn a new ones sprouted That teething hurts, I never doubted. Countless eyelashes stuck with cereal Food in the mouth is immaterial Peaches and plums mashed in the hair Baby peas smashed everywhere Twice the head bumps when two collide Double the back strain for each horsey ride At the park, twice the panic when I can't find them On the stairs, twice the challenge to be right behind them. There are two carseats to buckle Sometimes two bruises to kiss And yet when I watch them playing What I feel is double bliss. So the figures aren't all in yet There is no "known quantity" I could tally now to evermore Until infinity I could add up all the laundry And divide lap space and time And subtract the sleep I've missed so far (LOTS) And multiply the grime But however I compute it Through the out, and through the ins The sum total of my number play Is this: I LOVE MY TWINS! |
