This is actually the second time I've tried to work this piece. The first time, I got all the US states done, and then the piece suffered water damage and the stains wouldn't come out. Therefore, I started it over completely on new fabric.
The fabric is 14-count ivory Aida and for an example of scale, in this picture you can see my husband's arm as he holds up the almost-finished piece for photographing. By the way, this is not actually the finished piece in this photo. I thought it was, but it wasn't - I'd forgotten some backstitching and had to fix some mistakes I'd made. When the piece is framed, I hope to take another photo and show how it looks, although I doubt many people will notice the difference. ^_^
This piece took me over a year to finish, as I had a book project published and my son was born (not at the same time, thank goodness) but at least I achieved my goal: to finish before the end of 2003!
Originally, I had much more ambition: I was going to individually chart and color in all the Central and South American nations. Obviously, that didn't happen.
In the photo, the bottom appears "wavy". The fabric is still partly in the large square Q-Snap frame that I used to hold it steady while stitching, but the bottom is loose.
Oh, and someone did ask me if I would use this to poke pins into, to track each year's hurricanes. Would you poke pins into painted artworks?? No? Then why needle art? ::shudder:: Ah well, they didn't know any better.
