Alma Lucy "Annie" (Whitman) Beckwith

Alma Lucy "Annie" (Whitman) Beckwith - 69, New Minas,
N.S., died February 16, 2000, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville, N.S.
Born and raised in Inglisville by her late grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose Whitman and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Whitman.
She was a registered nurse's assistant at the Nova Scotia Sanatorium, Kentville, for a number of years.
She is survived by her husband, Robert; daughter, Vickie, High Level, Alta.; sons, Reginald, Hoyt, New Brunswick; Gary, Perry, Terry, Alberta; sisters, Pauline, Toronto; Bessie, Waterville; Shirley, Kingston; Vivian; Dorothy, Berwick; brother, Garfield, Waterville, four grandchildren.
Funeral was held Monday, Feb. 21 in W.C. Hiltz Funeral Parlour, Kentville, Capt. Kevin Pilgrim officiating.


Robert DeMont Beckwith

Robert DeMont Beckwith - 72, Kentville, N.S., passed away Thursday, November 7, 2002, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Aylesford, Kings Co., he was the son of the late Nollet Beckwith and Mabel Beckwith Ward. He spent his working career as a cook.
He is survived by daughter, Vickie (Mrs. Roger Light), High Level, Alta; sons, Gary, Ontario; Perry (Tracey), Terry, both of Calgary, Alta; stepson, Reginald "Reg" (Barb) Whitman, Hoyt, N.B.; sister, Geraldine Baltzer, Berwick; five grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Alma Lucy Whitman; his stepfather, Chester Ward. No visitation or funeral service by family request.


Douglas Frank Cousins

Douglas Frank Cousins. The family and friends of Douglas Frank Cousins are devastated by his sudden death on September 20, 2004. He leaves his cherished wife, Daniela; son Adam; daughter Alexandra; brother Gordon and family; his mother Eleanor Cousins and girlfriend of Adam, Destenie Snow. Family, friends and associates mourn his untimely passing. A formal leave-taking for Douglas will take place on Sunday, September 26, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre, 1535 South Gateway Road, Mississauga (Dixie Road, 2 lights south of Eglinton, (905) 602-1580. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Arthritis Society, Lung Association, Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Kidney Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
The following is added by Eleanor (Whitman) Cousins, mother of Douglas.

Douglas was born in Brampton, Ont. on November 19, 1950, son of Howard Edward and G. Eleanor Cousins (Whitman), brother of Gordon George Cousins, also born Brampton, Ont., August 10, 1948. The boys were the grandsons of George and Ida Whitman, Hillcrest Farm, Nictaux Falls, Nova Scotia. Both boys completed high school in Port Credit (Mississauga).
Douglas then obtained his B.A. at MacMaster University in Hamilton, then his LL.B. from the Law School of University of Western Ontario at London. He articled in London, practised in Mississauga for 26 years and earned the title of Specialist in the Study and Practice of Family Law. He was highly regarded as evidenced by the large attendance at his service.

He and Daniela were en route to a holiday in Europe but before getting across the Atlantic Ocean he succumbed to a massive heart attack and the flight was diverted from Vienna to Shannon Airport. It has all been a dreadful experience for all of us. Adam is age 20 and working in a Tool and Die job. Alexandra will be 18 in December and plans to study Journalism and Photography.


Lois Marie Guilbault

Lois Marie Guilbault, 66 years, of Inglisville, died Saturday, August 16, 2003 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Lawrencetown, she was a daughter of the late Eldridge and Sylvia (Whitman) Wood. She enjoyed music, attending jam sessions and variety shows and singing at the Port George Community Hall. She was employed at Andrew's Department Store, North Hills Nursing Home as a P.C.W., and recently retired as a home care worker.
Surviving are daughter Valerie (Chris) Leonard, Middleton; sons, Patrick, Inglisville; Clifford (Patricia) Lawrencetown; sisters Evelyn Palmer, Annapolis Royal; Joan (Stuart) Barteaux, Berwick; Janet (Wendell) Pye, Inglisville; Barbara Wood, Paradise; June (Ralph) Hiltz, Aylesford; Donna (Richard) Rice, Coldbrook; Mary (Norman) Gautreau, Orleans, Ont.; brothers, Murray (Evelyn), Port George; William "Billy" (June), Inglisville; Harold (Pat), Nictaux; Russell, North Bay, Ont.; grandchildren, Michael, Corey, Trent. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by foster parents Olive and Clifford Spurr; husband, Gerald; son, Kirk Alan; sister, Phyllis; brothers, Stephen, Carl, and Ralph.
Visiting will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, both in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton. Interment in St. Hubert, Que., at a later date.


Alice Blanche Whitman

Canning - The death occurred at her home at Sheffield Mills on Tuesday evening, 13 October, 1936, of Alice Blanche Whitman widow of Rev. Asaph Whitman. She was 44 years of age and was the daughter of George Sanford and Theresa (Wood) Sanford of Scott's Bay. She was apparently in good health yesterday, her death coming very unexpectedly after supper last evening.

She had been a resident of Sheffield Mills for the last ten years having come there with her husband after his retirement from the Port Lorne pasterate. Her husband predeceased her last December.

She is survived by two children, Paul and Pauline, also four stepchildren, Mrs. Ross of Medland, Mass.; Mrs. Sabine in New Hampshire; Mrs. Crawford of Craig, Sask. and Laurie Whitman living at home. Also surviving are her mother, Mrs. Alfred Marshall of Mount Rose, Anna. Co.; two brothers, Trueman Sanford of Wolfville and Charles of Swampscott, Mass., and three sisters, Mrs. Jacob Slocomb of Medford, Mass.; Mrs. Clyde Spindle of Rockland, Shelburne Co., and Mrs. Cora Sanford of Middleton.

The funeral service was held from her late home on Thursday afternoon, October 15th, the oficiating clergyman being Rev. R.W. Lindsay. Interment was at Hillaton.


Rev. Asaph Whitman

Sheffield Mills, 11 December 1935 - Rev. Asaph Whitman passed away Friday, Dec. 6, at his home, after an illness of many years duration. Rev. Mr. Whitman was born in 1851 at Round Hill, Annapolis County and was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Dimock Whitman.

He was educated at Acadia University and ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1890, holding pastorates in St. Margaret's Bay, Waterville, Sackville, New Ross, Tancook, West Jeddore, Port Lorne, Port Hilford, Onslow, Hammond's Plains and Lake George.

He was twice married, his first wife being Miss Ida Fader, of Chester and by whom he has four surviving children, Mrs. Crawford, Craig, Sask.; Mrs. Sabine, Keene, NH; Mrs. T. Ross, Medford, Mass.; and Lawrence Whitman, Sheffield Mills. His second wife, who was Miss Alice Sanford of Brickton, survives him and two children by this union, Paul and Pauline, residing at home.

One sister, Mrs. Porter, Lynn, Mass. and three brothers, William Whitman, Portage la Prairie, Man.; Isaac Whitman, Round Hill; and Rupert Whitman, Hansport; also survive.

The funeral, held from his late home Sunday afternoon was conducted by Rev. R.W. Lindsay, of the First Cornwallis Baptist Church and a mixed quartette sang. He was laid to rest in Hillaton Cemetery.


William "Bill" Albert Roscoe

William "Bill" Albert Roscoe, 74, of Lawrencetown, N.S., died June 28, 2000 in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Sheffield Mills, he was a son of the late George Britt and Lydia Maie Roscoe. After retiring as a Chief Petty Officer with the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy), following 25 years of service, he worked for 11 years with Nabisco Brands in Bridgetown. He sailed around the world on ships that included the Swansea, Iroquois, Crusader, Chignecto and Margaree. An inventive and generous man, he was well known for utilizing his skills as blacksmith, mechanic, carpenter, etc. to build or fix anything for family, friends, and the community. He also volunteered his time for Laubach Literacy, Income Tax for Seniors, Meals on Wheels, School Trustees, Church Trustees and was a valuable contributor to the Roscoe family history.
A selfless and caring father, grandfather and devoted husband, he is survived by his loving wife of fifty-one years, the former Barbara Geraldine Whitman; son Britt (Laurie Haynes), Lawrencetown; daughter, Terry (Wayne Boucher), Greywood; son Barry (Janice Frank), Lawrencetown; son David (Lynn Sheppard), Clarence;
daughter Jennifer (Bruce Graham), Caledonia, Ontario; and son Christopher (Kathryn Sharpe), Dartmouth; grandchildren, Annah, Emily, Kalle, Barry Justin, Robert, Richard, Christopher Britt, Matthew, Ashley, Marion and William; sister, Ruth (John Vickery), Woodville. He was predeceased by his brothers George and Henry "Buddy" Roscoe and sisters Helen Taylor Selfridge, Phyllis Whitman, and Ethel MacKinnon. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton. Memorial Service will be Sunday, July 2, 2000 at 7 p.m. at the United Baptist Church, Lawrencetown, Rev. Keith Wilbur officiating. Burial in Fairview Cemetery.


Charles Henry Whitman

Charles Henry Whitman, died February 21, 1938 at the age of 79y-8m-19d, and was born in Arcadia, N. S., June 2, 1858. He was a painter.
The death occurred early Monday night of Charles Henry
Whitman, one of Yarmouth's best known citizens, after only a brief illness. In his usual health until a few days ago, Mr. Whitman would have been 80 years old next June. The deceased was known far and wide as one of the most enthusiastic of Yarmouth's sport followers, his enthusiasm in baseball having taken him all over the province and several times to St. Steven, N. B., with local Gateway Nine. Basket ball was another hobby of the sportsman, and he was a familiar figure at championship meets in both games at Provincial and Maritime points. Son of Rev. Jacob and Mrs. Whitman, he was born in Arcadia. His parents were natives of Liverpool, N. S.
The deceased was the last of his family, two brothers, both over 80 years of age, having died last year, and a sister also having died at the age of 84 years. His last brother was killed recently when struck by an automobile in a highway accident. A painter by trade, the deceased had been retired for some years. He was an elder of Central United Church, a member of the I. O. O. F., which he joined in Camden, N. J., and a member of the Redmen Club of that city.
Fureral will be held on Friday afternoon at 2:30 from Sweeney's Funeral parlors with Rev. N. M. Rattee officiating, and with I. O. O. F. honors at the cemetery. Interment will be made at Yarmouth.


Charles Paul Whitman

Whitman, Charles Paul - age 28, of Church Street, Sydney Mines, N.S., died following a single car accident on Highway 105, Little Bras d'Or, Monday morning, September 4, 1978.
Born in Kentville, N.S., he was a son of Paul and Amanda (Saunders) Whitman. He came to Sydney Mines at the age of two. A graduate of Sydney Mines High School, he was in partnership with his father in the Fillmore-Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines.
A member of Clyde Avenue Baptist Church, he was vice-president of Sydney Mines Kinsman Club, and was involved in community sports.
Surviving are his wife, the former Catherine Barry; a brother Alan, Halifax; two sisters, Alice at home; Janet, Halifax.
The body is at Fillmore-Whitman Funeral Home, Sydney Mines. Funeral will be at 2 p.m., in Clyde Avenue Baptist Church. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery.


Rodger Austin Whitman, MD, CCFP, FCFP.

Peacefully on January 30, 2004 at age 85. Best friend and much loved husband of Marjorie (Owen). Dear father of Janis Bisback (Peter), Hensal, Anita Lindsay and fiance Jim McGrath, Selkirk, Joanne and (Darlene) Dee, both of Hamilton and chosen children Ernst and Laura Heuser of Stevensville. Loving grandpa to Victoria Whitman Bisback (Rego) (Clayton) of Toronto, Peter Owen Whitman Bisback and David Whitman Bisback of Hensal, Kevin Lindsay (Shannon) of Etobicoke, Trevor and Renee Lindsay of Selkirk. Special great grandpa to Olivia and Lauren Rego, Dear brother of Vern (Eileen), Peachland, B.C., Eleanor Cousins, Port Credit and Marion Dawdy, Beamsville. Family will receive friends at the Whitman residence in Selkirk on Sunday, February 1 st and Monday, February 2nd from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm. Special thanks to the staff of the Stonechurch unit of the Village of Wentworth Heights for their wonderful care. Also to Lillian and Karla and the families of the other residence for the ongoing support. Funeral service to be held at the St. John's Anglican Church. Cheapside at a later time. The family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer's Society or a charity of your choice.


Harland Leroy Whitman

Whitman, Harland Leroy - 85, of Port George, Annapolis County died August 7, 2003 at home. Born in Lawrencetown, he was a son of the late Leroy and Laura (Slauenwhite) Whitman. He served with the Canadian Army overseas during the Second World War. He was a member of Royal Canadian Legion, Lawrencetown Branch #112, member of the Lawrencetown Baptist Church where he sang in the church choir and served on various committees and a member of the Lawrencetown Male Choir. He was a well-known blacksmith and wheelwright. He was an active resident of the Port George community and enjoyed music and dancing. He is survived by daughters Luramae (Larry) Gillis, Grafton; Ann Marie (Don) Jans, Calgary; son Jack, Outram; sisters Thelma Callicott; Barbara Roscoe and Laura (Clyde) Gehue all of Lawrencetown; Geneva Wood, Bridgetown; brothers Frank (Rita) and Charles both of Lawrencetown; four grandchildren Carrie, Christa, Candice and Mark and two great grandchildren Jake and Mitchell.
He was predeceased by his wife the former Phyllis Roscoe; sisters Myrna and Sylvia, brother Douglas and great grandson Tyson. Royal Canadian Legion #112 will conduct their service 7 p.m. Saturday at the Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lawrencetown Baptist Church, Rev. Tom McGaw and Rev. Eugene Foster officiating. Interment in Hillside Cemetery, Port George. Donations to the Mid Valley Palliative Care Service or charity of choice.
Harland had a very strong sense of commitment for family and friends and passed away peacefully by the Bay.


Phyllis Lura Whitman

Whitman, Phyllis Lura - 74, Port George, Annapolis County, formerly of Clarence, Annapolis County, died November 28, 1992, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Gaspereau Valley, Kings County, she was a daughter of the late Britt and Mae (Spicer) Roscoe. She was a member of Clarence United Baptist Church and Women's Missionary Society.
She is survived by her husband, Harland; two daughters, Mrs. Luramae (Lorie) Gillis, Grafton, Kings County; Ann Whitman, Calgary, Alta.,; son, Jack, Outram; two sisters, Mrs. Ethel MacKinnon, Kentville; Mrs. Ruth Vickery, Keswick, N. B., brother, William, Lawrencetown; four grandchildren. She was predeceased by a sister, Helen; two brothers, George, Buddy.
The body is in Warren T. Roop Funeral Home, Middleton, where funeral will be 2 p.m. today. Dr. Phillip Griffin-Allwood officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Port George.


Pearlie "Anne" Whitman

Whitman, Pearlie "Anne" - 63, Lawrencetown, N.S.,
died May 9, 2003, in Soldiers Memorial Hospital, Middleton. Born in Amherst, she was a daughter of the late Claude and Wilma (Smith) Furlong. She was formerly employed as an x-ray technician at Soldiers Memorial Hospital and was a member of the Lawrencetown Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are her husband, Charles; son, James, Wilmot; brother, John Coleman, P.E.I.;
Graveside service will be held 11 a.m. today in Whitman Cemetery, Lawrencetown, Rev. Eugene Foster officiating.


Stephen Wayne Wood

Stephen Wayne Wood - 40, of Inglisville, Annapolis Co., died July 9, 2002 at home. Born in Middleton, he was a son of Sylvia (Whitman) Wood, Inglisville and the late W. Eldridge Wood. He was employed at the Department of Transport for 24 years. He enjoyed hunting, the outdoors and visits to the Apple Pit in Bridgetown.
Surviving are sisters Lois Guilbault, Inglisville; Eleanor Durling, Annapolis; Joan (Stuart) Barteaux, Berwick; Janet (Wendell) Pye, Inglisville; Barbara Wood, Paradise; June (Ralph) Hiltz, Aylesford; Donna (Richard) Rice; Coldbrook; Mary (Norman) Gautreau, Orleans, Ontario; brothers Murray (Evelyn), Port George; William "Billy" (June), Inglisville; Harold (Pat), Nictaux; Russell, North Bay, Ontario. Predeceased by sister Phyllis; brothers Carl and Ralph. Graveside service 11:00 a.m. Friday at Fairview Cemetery, Lawrencetown, Rev. Philip Griffin-Allwood officiating.


Sylvia Bernice Wood

Sylvia Bernice Wood - 86 years, of Inglisville, Annapolis Co., died
October 26, 2002, in Valley Regional Hospital, Kentville. Born in Lawrencetown, she was a daughter of the late LeRoy and Laura (Slauenwhite) Whitman.
Surviving are daughters, Lois Guilbault, Inglisville; Ellie Palmer, Annapolis; Joan (Stuart) Barteaux, Berwick; Janet (Wendell) Pye, Inglisville; Barbara Wood, Paradise; June (Ralph) Hiltz, Aylesford; Donna (Richard) Rice; Mary (Norman) Gautreau, Orleans, Ont.; sons, Murray (Evelyn), Port George; William "Billy" (June), Inglisville; Harold (Pat), Nictaux; Russell, North Bay, Ont.; sisters, Laura (Clyde) Gehue, Lawrencetown; Geneva Wood, Bridgewood; Barbara Roscoe, Lawrencetown; Thelma Callicott, Lawrencetown; brothers, Franklyn Whitman, Lawrencetown; Charles Whitman, Lawrencetown; Harland Whitman, Port George; 44 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren; four great great-grandchildren.
