SECOND GENERATION

THOMAS WHITMAN (2)


1. Thomas Whitman (2) was born in 1629. He died November 17, 1712, at the age of 83 years.
Thomas was "the oldest son of the ancestor." In 1641, Thomas, who was about 12 years old, along with his mother and other siblings joined his father John (1), in Massachusetts.

He was made free in 1653, in Boston, when he was 24 yrs. old and a church member.

He married Abigail Byram (2) the daughter of Ensign Nicholas Byram and Martha (Shaw) Byram.

They had seven (7) children:
1. John Whitman (3) born September 5, 1658 ~ Died: July 28, 1727
2. Ebenezer Whitman (3) born about 1673 ~ Died: 1713, aged about 40 yrs.
3. Nicholas Whitman (3) born 1675 ~ Died: August 6, 1746, aged 71 yrs.
4. Susanna Whitman (3) Died: aged 98 yrs.
5. Mary Whitman (3)
6. Naomi Whitman (3)
7. Hannah Whitman (3)

THIRD GENERATION

John Whitman (3) was born September 5, 1658, in Weymouth, Norfolk County, Massachusetts. He died July 28, 1727. He married Hannah Pratt in 1686.
It is said that he lived near his grandfather Byram in Bridgewater, on the east side of what is now called the Forge Pond. When he was 18, he was an active partisan soldier, and was in the King Philip's war. He died without children and in his will dated July 24, 1727, he mentions his wife Hannah as living. He bequeaths his homestead to his nephew David, who is the son of his brother Nicholas and appoints his brother as executor of his estate. He distributed his outlands and other property among his other relatives. He was well respected in society when he died.

Ebenezer Whitman (3) was born about 1673. He died in 1713, at the age of 40 years. On November 17, 1699, he married Abigail Burnham. She was the daughter of John Burnham and Abigail (Wells) Burnham. He was the second son of Thomas, and is said to have settled in the south of Bridgewater. He went there in about 1700, shortly before he became free. He lived on Wolf-trap Plain, where it has been occupied by five generations, until 1865.

They had 5 children:

3. John Whitman (4) born in 1707 ~ Died: young.
4. Hannah Whitman (4) born in 1709
5. Ebenezer Whitman (4) born in 1713 ~ Died: August 20, 1804

Nicholas Whitman (3) was born in 1675. He died August 6, 1746, at the age of 71 years. He first married Sarah Vining, in 1700, of Weymouth, Mass. She died in 1713.

They had 6 children:
1. Thomas Whitman (4) born in 1702 ~ Died: December 15, 1788, at the age of 86 years.
2. John Whitman (4) born in 1704 ~ Died: in 1792, at the age of 88 years.
3. Josiah Whitman (4) born in 1706 ~ Died: young.
4. David Whitman (4) born in 1709 ~ Died: in 1790, at the age of 80 years.
5. Jonathan Whitman (4) born in 1710 ~ Died: October 3, 1778, at the age of 68 years.
6. Seth Whitman (4) born in 1713 ~ Died: July 16, 1778, at the age of 65 years.

After the death of Sarah, he then married Mary Cary, who was the daughter of Francis and Hannah (Brett) Cary.

The had 2 children:
7. Eleazer Whitman (4) born 1716 ~ Died: May 31, 1807, at the age of 91 years.
8. Benjamin Whitman (4) born in 1719 ~ Died: young, unmarried.

After the death of Mary, in 1719, he then married again in 1719, to Mary Conant, granddaughter of Roger Conant.

Nicholas was given an honorable mention in the early history of the county.

They had 8 children of whom 4 died in infancy.

10. William Whitman (4) born in 1722 ~ Died: young.
11. Josiah Whitman (4) born in 1724 ~ Died: April 18, 1754, at the age of 29 years.
12. Sarah Whitman (4) born in 1726 ~ Died: April 26, 1818, at the age of 93 years.
13. Abigail Whitman (4) born in 1728 ~ Died: young.
14. Nicholas Whitman (4) born in 1731 ~ Died: 1803, at the age of 72 years.
15. Susannah Whitman (4) born in 1734 ~ Died: young.
16. Ebenezer Whitman (4) born in 1736 ~ Died: 1786, at the age of 50 years.

Susanna Whitman (3) was the oldest daughter of Thomas. She married Benjamin Willis. They lived near Town river in Bridgewater. She had many descendants, some of whom are known to have received a public education.
She Died: at the age of 98 years. He Died: May 12, 1696.
She had 5 children:
1. Thomas Willis (4) who died in infancy.
2. Capt. Thomas Willis (4) born in 1694.
3. Benjamin Willis, Jr. (4) born in 1696.
4. Susanna Willis (4)
5. Elizabeth Willis (4) born in 1688 ~ Died: March, 1773, at the age of 85 years.

Mary Whitman (3) She was the second oldest daughter of Thomas. She married Seth Leach. Caleb Leach, who was her great grandson, was a famous clockmaker and inventor. He assisted Dr. Fobes in the construction of the orrery, which was presented to Brown University.
They had 1 child:
1. Seth Leach (4)

Naomi Whitman (3) She was the third daughter of Thomas. She married William Snow. She was mentioned in the will of her brother John, which was dated July 24, 1727, as already being deceased. There are no records that show her birth or her death.
They had 6 children: (so she was absolutely living)
1. Bethiah Snow (4) born September 26, 1688.
2. James Snow (4) born October 14, 1691 ~ Died: August 28, 1749, at the age of 57 years.
3. Susanna Snow (4) born September 27, 1694.
4. William Snow (4) born August 14, 1697.
5. Ebenezer Snow (4) born July 14, 1701 ~ Died: March 29, 1789, at the age of 88 years.
6. John Snow (4) born on August 14, 1706.

Hannah Whitman (3) She married David Leach, who was the son of Giles and Anne (Nokes) Leach. He was born in Salem, Mass., in 1632, and as a young man settled in Weymouth, Mass., and then to Bridgewater. He was one of the 56 original proprietors of that town.
They had 7 children:
1. Mercy Leach (4) born November 22, 1693.
2. Hannah Leach (4) born August 31, 1696 ~ Died: July 31, 1716.
3. Ephraim Leach (4) born December 19, 1699 ~ Died: in 1771, probably without issue.
4. Experience Leach (4) born June 10, 1702.
5. David Leach (4) born May 20, 1706 ~ Died: before 1799.
6. Mehitabel Leach (4) born July 18, 1711 ~ Died: 1799.
7. Abigail Leach (4) September 15, 1714.
