Marriage and the Traditional Family: A World Turned Upside Down

INTRODUCTION


World When George Washington accepted the surrender of British General Cornwallis at Yorktown in 1781, a British band played the tune, "The World Turned Upside Down," most likely in a condescending and patronizing manner. You see, the British were upset that the world's greatest Army and Navy had been defeated by such a ragtag assortment of what were, for the most part, ordinary farmers or tradesmen turned into upstart citizen soldiers. Indeed, the American victory was a stunning turn of events. But in things of a social and cultural nature, the Americans didn't do much to revolutionize their heritage.(1)

In recent years however we have suffered an astonishing onslaught of our cultural and historical heritage. A great cultural revolution, which began at least as far back as the sixties, has changed much of the social landscape. The age old institution of marriage has also suffered greatly and is in danger of being redefined out of existence.

That war continues. It is raging right now in the United States-the war against western culture and the family-but this is a war which is not being fought with soldiers, guns, tanks, planes, or paratroopers. It is an ideological war and is fought with ideological bullets.

Those fighting against the family seek to demoralize American society and turn it into a moral wasteland. They are warring against all the "wisdom that has come to men through their ages of experience," and are seeking to "overturn and destroy the very foundations upon which society, government and religion rest."(2)

Recently, one of those ideological bullets was fired by an opponent of the family-a vice-president of Volvo Cars North America, a division of Ford Motor Company, when he offered a reason why the company would fund certain homosexual groups which promote homosexual marriage:

For us, it was very natural to address gay families. We're targeting people with modern day values. It's a value set and the Volvo-minded consumer is very diverse. 'Family' is much more than the traditional family.(3)
On the opposite side, a defender of traditional families stated:

The union of husband and wife assures perpetuation of the race and provides a divinely-ordained setting for the nurturing and teaching of children. This sacred family setting, with father and mother and children firmly committed to each other and to righteous living, offers the best hope for avoiding many of the ills that afflict society.(4)

This article will examine this cultural warfare against the family, and try to explain to the reader how alternative family constellations and alternative life-style choices are contrary to the best interests of the traditional family, community, state and nation. At this point a disclaimer needs to be presented-the evidence I provide will not be exhaustive nor comprehensive, or even qualify as a overview-it is merely a brief exploration into a broad and expansive subject.

SOURCE OF LAW

One of the things that a well-ordered civilized society needs is law. Law which is either inherent in the nature of things (natural law) or law as given by God, Divine or revealed.(5) It's pretty easy to determine the source of Divine law-that of God as revealed to his Prophets-but somewhat more difficult to determine the source of Natural Law. However, God so structured the world, that in the absence of Divine Law, man was not left alone to determine how man-made law should apply to govern society or to protect freedom.(6) But even this man-made law, in order for it be just, had to be built upon the foundation of natural or revealed law. In other words, man merely discovered law--that which was moral and just--and applied those principles in the enacting of law.(7) For instance, God provided man the ability to reason(8) intellectually(9) , and feel intuitively(10) the proper course to guide one's actions and in the enacting of man made laws.

So then, in the United States in regards to marriage and the law, the traditional idea of marriage as consisting of a man and a woman and any children (or none, if the wife is barren) appears to have both a "natural law" and a Divine mandate. It is a crime against nature, for instance, for men to leave "the natural use of the woman" and seek relationships of "men with men working that which is unseemly."(11) We also hear the admonition of David, that "whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing,"(12) and of Jeremiah counseling Israel to, "Take ye wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that ye may be increased there, and not diminished."(13)

Since marriage between a man and a woman is "ordained of God," and has a Divine mandate, one might infer that attempts by man to alter the definition of marriage or to substantially alter family law, or the "forms" of marriage, or to simply disregard God and his teachings regarding marriage, might have drastic consequences. What may befall our nation when the family law itself is moving toward focusing on "functional parenthood" rather than recognizing the role of biological parenthood? Or that family law be reconstituted, go "beyond conjugality," and focus on the "substance of relationships," and that alternative relationships must be put on a level playing field with that of traditional marriage?(14) The Bible tells us that it is "righteousness" which "exalteth a nation." Perhaps it is this righteousness, or the lack thereof, that Col. Mason, a delegate to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, had in mind when he lamented the fact that the new Constitution would not abolish slavery:

As nations can not be rewarded or punished in the next world they must be in this. By an inevitable chain of causes & effects providence punishes national sins, by national calamities.(15)

Calamities certainly happened anciently when man disregarded God and the sacredness of the institution of marriage--witness the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Or witness the fall of the great Roman Empire due, to summarize the work of the historian Edward Gibbon, to a rapid increase of divorce; the undermining of the dignity and sanctity of the home, which is the basis of human society.(16)

Traditional marriage is also firmly rooted and grounded in Common law and early statutory state law. At three early court cases, Vidal v. Girard's Executors,(17) People v. Ruggles,(18) and Updegraph v. Commonwealth(19) demonstrate how the Bible and the basic principles of morality derived thereof were part of that law. Furthermore, these decisions illustrate the belief of the judiciary of the time that these principles of the Bible and basic morality, when enacted into law, tend to strengthen civil government and the sacredness of traditional family relationships.

CAUSES OF THE CURRENT FAMILY CRISIS

While this paper will not address, except for a short digression, the causes of the current cultural revolution against traditional families and marriages, it is instructive to note that chief among the enemies of the traditional family are those who adhere to the ideology of Marx and Lenin. For instance, many of the past and present leaders of the feminist (such as Bella Abzug, Shulamith Firestone, Gloria Steinham, and others)(20) and the homosexual (Harry Hay, Dennis Altman, Marshall Kirk, Erastus Pill, and others)(21) movements are, or were, Marxist. Karl Marx himself called for the "abolition of the family," in the Communist Manifesto,(22) so it should come as no surprise that an expert on Marxism, testified before Congress in 2003 that, "the planned destruction of the family was part of the communist agenda from its inception by Karl Marx and Frederic Engels."(23)

In a boast, Michael Walzer, bragged about some of the battles that Marxists have won in their war against family and western culture. For instance he bragged that through their efforts there has been, among other things he named, a "visible impact of feminism," an "emergence of gay rights politics, and . . . the attention paid to it in the media," "the transformation of family life, [including] rising divorce rates, changing sexual mores, new household arrangements-and, again, the portrayal of all this in the media," and the "legalization of abortion."(24)

While Marxism is an ideology in which men believe, it is also crucial to understand that it is also a conspiracy in which men participate.(25) Understanding this aspect of Marxism is vital to understanding: their tactics and strategy;(26) their use of agent provocateur's to provoke change in society and culture; and to gain the information vital to those seeking to oppose these Marxist change agents and their diabolical plans.

I mention all of this so that those who are seeking to preserve traditional families might get a better understanding of the enemy they are fighting. For the primary movers, or activists, seeking to abolish the family adhere to the ideology of Marx and Lenin. They seek to establish moral anarchy. Since the "perfect classless society" will supposedly be established upon the ashes of chaos and anarchy, moral anarchy is the goal. A "psy-ops war" is being conducted against us then, where infidelity, atheism, moral licentiousness, intemperance, civil corruption, greed, avarice, and ambition-personal, political, and national-are glorified and promoted-all in an effort to weaken us and our will to resist. The casualties in this war include not only their victims but those who have been pulled and thrust into new fields of action-hence the Marxist "peaceniks" have now mutated into environmental and NAMBLA activists-and new lines of thought-the moral relativists mutating into the worship of "self esteem", a belief in aliens, magic and "new age" psychology. These activists are shaking the faith, undermining morals, and polluting the lives of their victims who are then thrown so far off balance in their activities-economic, social, political and religious-that civilized society stands in danger of being overthrown.(27)

Further, the harm done by these social activists is not limited to those areas where they seek to advance "avant garde," or "vanguard of the proletariat," lifestyles and alternative family relationships. One study suggests that the influence of Marxist socialism and resultant socialist programs they are able to get governments to adopt, is enough by itself to deteriorate the family. For instance, that study suggests that the welfare state in Sweden has stripped the family of the economic benefits of having children, promoted lower fertility rates, and greater dependency upon paternal or "big brother government":

While a nation's family system may reorganize, for a time, around the nuclear "husband-wife" unit of reproduction, even that basis of independence eventually dissolves. The end result of state intervention is progressively diminished fertility, with living individuals left standing alone in a dependent relationship with the government.(28)

Further, socialistic intervention by government is often, and I would argue that it is usually, harmful. As one religious leader observed:

There are those who would define the family in such a nontraditional way that they would define it out of existence. The more governments try in vain to take the place of the family, the less effective governments will be in performing the traditional and basic roles for which governments are formed in the first place.(29)

In other words, if the traditional and proper role of government is to protect citizens in their life, liberty and property,(30) it becomes less effective the more it assumes a paternal role in society.

Marxism, in all its variants, is an enemy to the United States, western society and culture, and contrary to reports otherwise, is not dead but is instead actively engaged in seeking to destroy our society, culture, legal institutions, including those most fundamental to preserving a free society--marriage and the family. This understanding is vital to those interested in preserving these institutions.

BROAD BENEFITS

Exactly how do alternative lifestyles and alternative family constellations work against the best interests of the individual involved, the families involved, and the greater good of communities, states and our nation? One of the first things that need to be mentioned is that there are certain broad benefits that accrue to those living in a traditional marriage or traditional family unit. Those benefits can be classified into groups, such as physical health, spiritual or emotional health and happiness, economic, social, political and other benefits. As a former Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson, broadly stated it:

No nation rises above its homes. In building character the church, the school, and even the nation stand helpless when confronted with a weakened and degraded home. The good home is the rock foundation--the cornerstone of civilization. There can be no genuine happiness separate and apart from a good home, with the old-fashioned virtues at its base. If your nation is to endure, the home must be safeguarded, strengthened, and restored to its rightful importance(31)

Or as another expert at the J. Reuben Clark law school put it:

Committed heterosexual marriages provide the best setting into which children can be born and reared. Duel-gender parents show children how to relate to other people, provide the safest and most stable compassionate unit of society, and offer the most secure setting for the sharing of social knowledge and skills.(32)

According to Patrick F. Fagan, of the Heritage Foundation, the "safest environment for a child, that is, the family environment with the lowest risk ratio for physical abuse, is one in which the biological parents are married and the family has always been intact." Further, the statistics for abuse rises sharply when alternative family constellations are adopted afterwards. Abuse for children in families other than the traditional rises at the following rates:

  • 6 times higher than the traditional family when the mother remarries
  • 14 times higher if the child lives with the biological mother who lives alone
  • 20 times higher if the child lives with the biological father who lives alone
  • 20 times higher if the child lives with the biological parents who are not
  • married but are cohabitating
  • 33 time higher if the child lives with the biological mother who is cohabitating with another man(33)

Regarding children and the "best setting" into which they can be reared, it is interesting to note that the French Parliament recently rejected the legalization of adoption or medically assisted procreation by partners in homosexual marriages.(34) They noted that "Marriage is not merely the contractual recognition of the love between a couple; it is a framework that imposes rights and duties, and that is designed to provide for the care and harmonious development of the child."(35) It is clear, to the French at least, that the traditional family is the best setting for children.

Children who come from traditional families are also less likely to have to endure the hardships that come with poverty. The percentage of children in poverty, according to one study, of children in poverty according to family arrangement are as follows:

  • 12% of children from 1st marriage, traditional families
  • 13% of children from subsequent marriages
  • 31% of children from divorced families
  • 39% of children from cohabitating parents
  • 41% of children with parents who are separated
  • 67% of children from a mother who never married(36)

TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE VERSUS SAME-SEX CIVIL UNIONS

If the traditional heterosexual marriage provides the best setting for children, it stands to reason that any deviation from that ideal would be harmful. But those harmful effects are not confined solely to children, there are other detrimental effects.

First of all is the legal consideration. The fact is that homosexual relationship simply do not fit "fit the minimum necessary condition for a marriage to exist--namely, the union of a man and a woman" and the institution of marriage itself is not a creation of the law--it predates both the Constitution and the law.(37) Therefore, as it stands right now same-sex partners, in every state of the Union, are denied the right to legally marry. Because homosexual relationship partners are denied the legal benefit of marriage some societal turmoil results. For instance, partners in a same-sex relationship do not have the legal (tax benefits, inheritance, etc.) or financial (health insurance and other) benefits that married couples have.(38) For instance, families can be torn apart-if there are any children involved, they can be taken away from the remaining partner in the case of death or "divorce." There is no right of inheritance. The remaining partner has no say in speaking up for the wishes of a deceased or seriously ill partner.

But suppose the laws throughout the different states were changed and same-sex marriages, or at least civil unions, were now allowed. How would that impact the law and society? At least one study suggests that such a change would negatively impact society by ignoring those who share a "household" but are not at all interested, legally or otherwise, with marriage. People such as a "daughter living with her elderly mother, a grandson living with his infirm grandfather, a friend who looks after a disabled person on a long-term basis, or two friends sharing on a long-term basis."(39) These are people who appear to be in much greater need of support by government that would be completely ignored.

Other studies suggest that homosexual marriages would deny certain benefits to society. Things such as:

  • Foster the bonding between men and women
  • Foster the birth and rearing of children
  • Foster the bonding between men and children
  • Foster some form of healthy masculine identity
  • Foster the transformation of adolescents into sexually responsible adults(40)

Homosexual partners are also more likely to: transmit disease; participate in abuse or violence; have greater health, emotional, or behavioral problems; have higher illicit drug use; have higher frequencies of arrests; subsist at poverty levels; have higher rates of school failure or expulsion.(41)

There are other reasons to avoid legalizing same sex marriages, or authorizing civil unions between those of the same sex. Reasons such as:

  • Children born either through the use of in-vitro technology or the use of surrogate mothers still hunger for their biological parents
  • A child's need for a father
  • A child's need for a mother
  • Children raised in same sex homes have a higher incidence of gender and sexual disorders
  • Same sex marriages would most likely undercut the norm of sexual fidelity within marriage
  • Falling fertility rates
  • An absence of the domesticating influence that women and marriage have on men(42)

To avoid these health and safety problems then, society in general and the legal profession specifically, needs to reject any attempt to normalize or legalize same-sex civil unions or to redefine marriage to include same-sex couples. On the other hand, there are certain general or broad benefits to society in general and traditionally married couples in specific that come from living within a traditional marriage and of living a traditional lifestyle.

DIVORCE

The general rule of law, according to natural, Divine, and even most man-made law in the several states of the United States, is that the traditional family is the best place to raise children and provide them with the necessary nurturing and guidance. Broken families, either through death or divorce therefore would come short of the ideal. Regarding the issue of divorce and the impact that this has on families, at least one researcher notes that it "harms children" and is an "infectious social plague that hurts the commonweal."(43)

I agree in general. In fact, I would agree with a position that the Catholic Church teaches in its "Catechism of the Catholic Church" that in general divorce:

is a grave offense against the natural law. Divorce is immoral . . . because it introduces disorder into the family and into society. This disorder brings grave harm to the deserted spouse, to children traumatized by the separation of their parents and often torn between them, and because of its contagious effect, which makes it truly a plague on society.(44)

Statistics seem to bear this position out. Since no-fault divorce laws were enacted in the early 70's divorce accelerated 17 percent between 1968 and 1988.(45) and children of divorced parents were 50% more likely to divorce their spouse.(46)

Further, divorce has a detrimental effect on children. Children in general, lose the following benefits from broken families:

  • The benefit from economic resources that both parents bring to the household
  • Parental modeling of appropriate male-female relations and character building traits, such as fidelity and self sacrifice
  • With both parents in the home they are able to "spell" one another and to monitor each other's parenting, thus reducing stress and helping to ensure that there is a moderation between the two extremes of being either too strict or too permissive in their parenting, as well as reducing the likelihood of abuse
  • With fathers in the home they can act as guides to their children inintroducing them to the outside world
  • Natural parents have the family history and culture, the authority, and the trust of children(47)

Children from broken homes also, on average, are more likely to drop out of high school, bear children out of wedlock, end up in prison, and to increase the chances of impoverishment.(48) For these reasons, in conclusion, the law should make every effort to support couples and the sacred institution of marriage--not make it ever more easier to get out of.

ADOPTION LAW

For the reasons before cited, in regards to children doing better physically, emotionally, financially, and otherwise, in the traditional family, and in seeking the rule of what is in the best interest of the child, there should be a high legal preference to traditional married couples. I agree with the model legislation proposed by the Institute for Marriage and Public Policy that, "it is in the child's best interest (where possible) to provide that child with the closest possible restoration of that child's natural right to the care and protection of both a mother and a father," and that "family structure is highly relevant to child well-being," and charging the legislature as part of the act, to seek the best interest of an adoptive child by "placing the child with a married mother and father."(49)

However, many states ban discrimination based on marital status, with five states specifically making it "illegal to prefer married couples in placement decisions," and only the state of Utah codifying a "clear preference for married couples in adoption."(50) As of March 29th of this year (2006) the Arizona House passed legislation giving preference to married couples in adoptions but it remains to be seen whether the Senate or the Governor will sign such legislation.(51)

Historically however, adoption has only been very recently (mid 1800's) a "legal structure," and the first adoption laws, significantly enough, were "designed to imitate nature [the traditional marriage between a man and a woman]."(52) American society, as well as the political and legal professions, needs to return to their roots regarding adoption and return the traditional married couple to their rightful "preferred" position regarding adoption and adoption proceedings.

CUSTODY AND VISITATION

Historically, Custody in the United States, is the right of a parent to make decisions for the child and to take care of the child, and visitation is the right (some jurisdictions deeming it a privilege) of a non-custodial parent to visit with their children. It used to be the case that most jurisdictions preferred custody going to the biological mother (as the one most qualified) and most jurisdictions would limit visitation rights to only those with a biological relationship.

Today, however great inroads have been made. For example, in a recent Pennsylvania case, non-relatives sought to obtain visitation rights,(53) and in a Utah case, a former lesbian lover sought the same.(54) While most jurisdictions acknowledge that it is the most biological mother who is usually the one most qualified to care for the child other jurisdictions have been more liberal in their approach.

Judges today, in seeking to determine visitation rights, attempt to determine what is public policy and what is in the best interests of the child when seeking that determination. The problem being that "public policy" and what is actually the "best interest of the child" might be two entirely separate things. And leads to, in the words of one family expert, an "expansion of state power and fragmentation of the family."(55) But, do judges really know what is in the best interest of the child when all they are going on is the interview, of a couple hours length (if their lucky) of a family in crisis by a social worker, who basically tells the judge what to do?

Is seeking the best interests of a child even justified? What about seeking the best interests of the family? While I know that there are plenty of instances where children need to be protected from abusive parents or other adults, children are resilient and perhaps more effort needs to expended by society to keep families together rather than seeking to tear them apart.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, let me quote these words from the Heritage Foundation:

Marriage is a fundamental institution, deeply rooted in all societies, which has been tested and reaffirmed over thousands of years. It is the permanent union of one man and one woman. Marriage is not, in the words of a Massachusetts court, an "evolving paradigm," but instead a time-tested pillar of civilization.(56)

Perhaps, to put it more succinctly, we ought to recall these words, from a value-laden era, and from a man--Benjamin Franklin--who firmly believed in the law of chastity, contrary to what certain historical revisionists make him out to be, who penned a letter to a young man attempting to persuade his friend from adopting a mistress and rejecting the institution of marriage:

Marriage is the proper remedy. It is the most natural state of man, and therefore the state in which you are most likely to find solid happiness. Your reasons against entering into it at present appear to me not well founded. The circumstantial advantages you have in view by postponing it are not only uncertain, but they are small in comparison with that of the thing itself, the being married and settled.

It is the man and woman united that make the complete human being. Separate, she wants his force of body and strength of reason; he, her softness, sensibility, and acute discernment. Together they are more likely to succeed in the world. A single man has not nearly the value he would have in that state of union. He is an incomplete animal. He resembles the odd half of a pair of scissors. If you get a prudent, healthy wife, your industry in your profession, with her good economy, will be a fortune sufficient.(57)

And finally, to quote Newsmax pundit, Steve Farrell, we ought to keep in mind that there are wicked, haughty, and destructive eyes peering:

down on Marriage and the Family--and yet marriage between a man and a woman, and children raised by mother and father, are still Divine institutions. The nation that makes war on them will rue the day as surely as the sun rises tomorrow. The nation that rises up and defends them will save itself.(58)

In order to stem these destructive forces assaulting the family and our Judeo-Christian culture and heritage--and isn't that what George Washington and his gallant soldiers fought for when boiled down to its essentials?--Shall we not attempt to do everything in our power to become involved in civic affairs and strive to make our influence felt by our vote, our letters, and our advice?(59)

To do any less would be to give up the fight to moral and ideological reprobates who, are striving with all their might, to turn our society, culture, values, and indeed the whole world upside down.

Barruel. Memoirs Illustrating The History Of Jacobinism. City: Real-View-Books, 1995. Abbe Barruel was a Catholic Jesuit priest who saw the influence of the secret combination known as the Jacobin's on the French Revolution. Barruel and Robison (who wrote Proofs of a Conspiracy) were contemporaries who each wrote books detailing the rise of a secret combination which sought, and is still seeking today, to overthrow all the governments and religions of the world and supplanting them with a world government of their own making. Although Barruel and Robison were different in their methodology and viewpoint, both works support and buttress each other and both should be read, along with the more modern work, Fire in the Minds of Men, to grasp an understanding of a vast world-wide conspiracy which exists today that seeks to undermine our Judeo-Christian heritage, including the vital institutions of marriage and the family, and to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations and countries.

Billington, H., James. Fire In The Minds Of Men. City: Basic Books, 1983. Originally written in 1980, Billington has impeccable credentials and is the current historian for the Library of Congress. What makes his work even more important is that Billington verifies the works of Robison and Barruel, and all of this from an admitted liberal. Billington notes in extensive detail the ideological and conspiratorial roots of modern day Marxists and revolutionary movements. This is an important work to understand in order to comprehend what is behind our current social, political, and sexual activists seeking to undermine western cultural heritage.

The Book of Mormon: Another Testament of Jesus Christ. Salt Lake City: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1981. The Keystone Scripture for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. President Ezra Taft Benson said of this scripture that one of the books purposes was to expose:

the enemies of Christ. It confounds false doctrines and lays down contention. (See 2 Nephi 3:12.) It fortifies the humble followers of Christ against the evil designs, strategies, and doctrines of the devil in our day. The type of apostates in the Book of Mormon are similar to the type we have today. God, with his infinite foreknowledge, so molded the Book of Mormon that we might see the error and know how to combat false educational, political, religious, and philosophical concepts of our time. President Benson also said that this book:

states that the downfall of two great American civilizations came as a result of secret conspiracies whose desire was to overthrow the freedom of the people. 'And they have caused the destruction of this people of whom I am now speaking', says Moroni, 'and also the destructions of the people of Nephi (Ether 8:21).' Now undoubtedly Moroni could have pointed out many factors that led to the destruction of the people, but notice how he singled out the secret combinations, just as the Church today could point out many threats to peace, prosperity, and the spread of God's work, but it has singled out the greatest threat as the godless conspiracy. There is no conspiracy theory in the Book of Mormon--it is a conspiracy fact. Then Moroni speaks to us in this day and says, 'wherefore, the Lord commandeth you, when ye shall see these things come among you that ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation, because of this secret combination which shall be among you (Benson, Ezra Taft. Regarding the connection which the Book of Mormon has to Marxism, or Communism, and the influence these ideologies have upon modern society, President Benson had the following to say:

Concerning the United States, the Lord revealed to his prophets that its greatest threat would be a vast, world-wide 'secret combination' which would not only threaten United States but also seek to 'overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations, and countries' (Ether 8:25). In connection with attack on the United States, the Lord told the Prophet Joseph Smith there would be an attempt to overthrow the country by destroying the Constitution. Joseph Smith predicted that the time would come when the Constitution would hang, as it were, by a thread, and at that time 'this people will step forth and save it from threatened destruction' (Journal History, Brigham Young's Speech, July 4, 1854). . . . The Prophet Moroni seemed greatly exercised lest in our day we might not be able to recognize the startling fact that the same secret societies which destroyed the Jaredites and decimated numerous kingdoms of both Nephites and Lamanites would be precisely the same form of criminal conspiracy which would rise up among the gentile nations in this day. The stratagems of the leaders of these societies are amazingly familiar to anyone who has studied the tactics of modern communist leaders. The Lord has declared that before the second coming of Christ it will be necessary to 'destroy the secret works of darkness . . City: Kessinger Publishing, 2003. Written in 1798, Robison details the origin, rise, and influence of the secret society known as the Illuminati (and its eventual successor Communism) and its effect on the French Revolution. Proofs of a Conspiracy is an important work to get to know and understand for anyone seeking to understand modern day Communism. This book was also influential on George Washington and the President of Yale University, Timothy Dwight, in helping them understand the rise of Secret Combinations seeking to overthrow the newly born Republic. This understanding of the conspiracy that George Washington gained by reading this book led to the so-called Citizen Genet affair and the Alien and Sedition Acts. This influence of the Jacobins on the early United States is probably one of the most neglected areas in all of U.S. history.

It should be on everyone's shelf if they desire a greater understanding of the thoughts, ideas, speeches and writings of those who were instrumental in shaping ideas, and in the founding of the American Republic.
