Featured Driver/Car

Sorry, I haven't been as active in keeping the "Featured Driver/Car" going as I had planned to but that's life. I'm going to try a do a different driver and/or car every 3 months so keep coming back to check up on my progress. If I fall behind, drop me a line and "remind" me. If you know someone or their car worth posting here, let me know that too.

We begin with Mike Alberts and his 1967 Z-28 Camaro. A team that began back in 1979 when he bought a share of his cousin's Camaro. The pair raced the car for about a year until Mike bought out his cousin's share and began what has become a long term relationship, 25 years and still counting.


Mike's Camaro - Early Days

In late fall 1982, Mike and his Camaro went to Soldier's Field for their very first magazine shoot. Sitting on the 50 yard line in 10 degree weather, this shoot was the first of many shoots over the years. Up to and including the May 2005 issue of "Chevy Rumble" magazine, Mike and his Camaro have graced the pages of many a magazine. Magazines aren't the only place either. Many speed parts catalogs, including Auto Meter, have featured Mike and his Camaro.

Experimenting with various engine combinations and nitrous, the car's performance has improved from the low 11's to the low 8's with a current best of 8.18 at 170 mph. Not bad for a 3200lb street car. Currently powered by a tall deck 598ci Chevy big block, a pair of Holley 1150 Dominators and NOS fogger nitrous system. The power is transmitted thru a Turbo 400 modified by Dave Vyhanek to a Strange Engineering 9inch rear end with Richmond Pro 4.56 gear and then out to Hoosier 17x34 slicks.

Besides their performance, Mike and his Camaro are also known for wheelies. What? only 200ft long, must be something wrong here. At Union Grove Wisconsin, Mike and his Camaro went 367ft with the wheels hanging before they touched down. That didn't hurt the performance too much as they still went 8.35 at 166mph.

Racing and wheelies aren't Mike and the Camaro's only "claim to fame". During the winter of 84-85, Mike took his Camaro to a number of ISCA indoor car shows where he won numerous awards. The list includes "Best Comp Car", "Best Undercarriage", "Best Paint", "Best Engine", "Best Detail" and "Best Display". Mike also won the "Gas Coupe & Sedan" class and was number 8 in the ISCA Top 10 for the Great Lakes Division.
