The Greek Folk Music FTPserver was created in an attempt to collect and distribute traditional Greek folk music around the world. There is no other server of a national collection of folk music that we are aware of. The Greek Folk Music FTPserver is the 1st (and only) of its kind.
The collection is to consist of music and songs from all regions of
Greece including Thrace, Macedonia, Thessaly, Epirus, Sterea Ellada, Peloponnese,
Crete, Aegean Islands, Ionian Islands, Cyprus, Asia Minor, Pontus, Propontus,
Eastern Thrace, Eastern Romilia, Vlachika, Sarakatsanika, and others...
The music is ideally traditional, with traditional instrumentation and
in wave or mp3 format. The quality of the music is preferentially high,
starting at 128kbps and above (for cd recording purposes, at least 192kbps
is recommended), although lower quality music may be acceptable, especially
in cases of hard-to-find music.
The concept is a semi-public backup server or file-sharing system that
is accessible by anybody who has access to the internet and an ftp client.
In order to help build the server, there will be an exchange ratio in place,
at least initially. The initial ratio will be 1:3. This means that for
every valid file uploaded to the server, you will be eligible to download
3 files of your choice. Major contributors will receive more access, such
as a permanent account, based on their contribution and may, if desired,
be asked to become a server adminstrator with unlimited access. When the
server is large enough, access will be entirely public, meaning uploads
will not be required in order to download.
Special privileges will be given to those who upload files on the Special Request list (below).
Be sure to read the News (below) for important information and to monitor
the progress of the server. The attempt will be to have the server up 24
hours a day, 7 days a week. However, when this is not possible, messages
will be placed in the News section below with information pertaining to
the availability of the server. If you attempt to log in and are unable
to, please try again at a later time or check this site for current IP
address.
1. In order to access the server, you will require an ftp client/program. If you do not already have one, you can download one of the following free clients: WS_FTP LE (32-bit) 5.08, SmartFTP 1.0 build 961, FTP Explorer 1.00.10, LeechFTP 1.3.1.207.
2. Once installed, use the ftp client to connect to our server at the IP address listed in the Server Information section near the bottom of this page. Currently, the IP address is greekfolk.serveftp.com. The initial login/password for all users is upload/upload.
3. Once you have successfully logged onto the server you are free to browse the directories (by region). If you choose to upload files to the server, please be sure to upload to the UPLOAD HERE folder. ***Also upload a text file with the filename being YOUR name. For example, if your name is Abc Def, then name your text file abcdef.txt or abcdef.doc, or something along those lines. In this text file please include the name of any files you uploaded to the server as well as your contact information (name, location, e-mail address at which we can reach you).
4. Once we have received your files and checked the music (the UPLOAD HERE folder will be checked anywhere from once to several times daily), we will e-mail you with a login/password that will allow you to download music at a ratio of 1:3, meaning 3 downloads for every valid upload.
!
Major contributors to the server will be given permanent or leech access,
or may be given administrator status. This decision will be made according
to the amount of music uploaded by an individual user.
