My first shop was called 7 1/2 it opened in the east village in 1980 I sold only vintage black dresses. Then in 1981 i joined forces withJulia Morton, who did the costumes forLiquid Sky. We opened a shop together called Einsteins. At the time I was doing costumes for Iggy Pop, Ethyl Eichelburger and various down town stars. Julia and I also designed a line of dresses for men and for the entire year of 1983 we toured the US doing mens dresses fashion shows. Then in 1984 we moved to a larger location and I had just met Greer and I brought her in. So we added her dolls. Greer was an enormous downtown art star. her dolls of Teri Toye and Diana Vreeland were legendary as was she. In '85 my jewlery line took off and I was selling globally...they were surreal pieces like baby grand piano hats... baroque picture frame brootches...and miniture tea set earings etc.....in London Isold in Harvey Nichols. I had a rep too in London .....einsteins attracked a very high brow crowd...art smart elite. PAUL MONROE |
