The Faithful Remnant
The faithful remnant of Israel consisted of a small minority of God's Covenant people. These people were truly counter culture and did not follow the ways of the godless or the idolaters. They did not adulterate God's laws with men's traditions. They weren't liked very much by the apostate religious establishment either. The faithful remnant by their very existence heaped shame and discomfort on their pseudo religious rivals. The faithful remnant wasn't very popular with their contemporaries but those few who served God faithfully were like an oasis in a vast spiritual desert. They served God faithfully! That's a church philosophy that God can really bless and prosper. The dominant philosophy in the modern day American church seems to be taken from the movie "Field of Dreams". It can be summed up in a quote from that film, "build it and they'll come". Build an expensive huge building, implement the right programs and structure, and the rest will take care of itself. If you are willing to cater to people's superficiality, you can build an empire. It wouldn't disturb me so much if it didn't work so well. Well I'm going to burst a few peoples bubble and say bigger is not always better. The emphasis of numbers and expansion has distorted the real mission of the Church. Please allow God to take care of the numbers and just be faithful to what God has revealed in His Word! I have it on good authority this is what pleases Him.
