Greg Lopez for City Council

Who is Greg Lopez? Greg Lopez is a native of Santa Cruz. That’s right born and raised right here in Santa Cruz. As a father, he is concerned with the direction of politics here in town. Too many jobs have left the area and are not replaced. Our main tourist area, the Beach Flats is in a state of continued decline. Drugs and prostitution are openly peddled in the streets and violence is a common place. The Downtown area is still not rebuilt and it has been thirteen years since we had the Loma Prieta Earthquake. Traffic problems persist and no solutions are found. Where is all the affordable housing that is promised election after election? Politics as usual, or time for a change? It is time for the residents of Santa Cruz to change the direction of politics and VOTE to make the change NOW!

The Beach Flats: Greg will work to clean up the Beach Flats and surrounding areas. Santa Cruz is one of the most beautiful areas in the world and visitors contribute a great deal to our local economy. So why is it one of our most visited areas is one of our worst areas in the city? The Beach Flats area, long neglected, is a constant source of trouble for our Police Department. Attempts in the past to invest in the Flats have been put on hold or scrapped altogether. When will the quality of life for people in the Flats be improved? The time is NOW to make the decision to revitalize the area. Greg Lopez supports the revitalization of the Beach Flats area.

Traffic: Traffic is another problem long talked about but little has been done to improve it. We have to be innovative and look for real solutions to our traffic problems. While looking for solutions we need to look for lasting results. The Mission Street Corridor is an example of how traffic can be improved. So why are we going to tear it all up again to do the under grounding of the utilities?
As industries and jobs leave the area, people have to increase their dependence on cars to get from place to place. Commuting to work is common place. An increase in quality local industries would reduce the gridlock and create jobs. Reducing traffic doesn’t mean reducing jobs so there is no traffic.

Housing: Santa Cruz must work to find ways to make housing more affordable for its people. One way is to work with UCSC to house more students on campus. Housing students on campus makes good economic sense. This would free up existing housing and make it available for other groups of people that compete for this affordable housing. Also less traffic would result when students don’t have to commute to campus each day. We must look for new housing opportunities, including combination Retail/Housing projects. We need to protect our neighborhoods from projects that increase the density of traditional neighborhoods. We must look to locate new housing along existing transportation corridors and in areas where traffic will have minimal impact. We must look for solutions that don’t threaten our Greenbelt or other natural areas.

Retail Business: A strong Tax (Sales Tax) base is directly related to City Finances. When a city has a strong retail district it can generate more from sales tax and this revenue can be used for

the good of the community. Santa Cruz has seen a great decline in its retail options. Car dealerships have moved to Capitola. Gone are the downtown Department Stores. Where do the people of Santa Cruz go to buy items like bed sheets, bath towels, women’s under garments or men’s suits? The answer, of course, is not in Santa Cruz. Greg supports a strong Downtown and more retail opportunities in Santa Cruz.

Jobs: Santa Cruz has lost many good paying jobs. As these jobs leave the area people need to commute to other communities to find work. While in these communities they do shopping and this too contributes to our sagging economy. We need good paying jobs like Liptons, Wrigleys, Salzs Tannery and Texas Instruments. Good paying jobs make Santa Cruz a more affordable place to live. Greg will work to attract good paying jobs to Santa Cruz.

• Greg supports the widening of Highway 1.
