Nearly 23 years after Doctor Finlay's Casebook made it's last appearance on Radio 4 (not counting repeats), the strains of Trevor Duncan's March from his "Little Suite" heralded the return of the characters created byA. J. Cronin to BBC Radio 4 in Dr Finlay: Adventures of a Black Bag, A 6 part series which was broadcast from 8 October to 12 November 2001. The characters returned in another 6 part series titled Dr Finlay: The Further Adventures of a Black Bag from 25 November to 30 December 2002.

From the BBC Press Office release:
  Scotland’s best-loved doctors return in six more comedies about life, birth and death in small-town Scotland. John Gordon Sinclair plays Finlay and Brian Pettifer plays Cameron, in six stories taken from the books of AJ Cronin.The stories have been adapted for radio by Sue Rodwell.

  As the first story opens, Dr Finlay is still trying to bring the practice into the 20th century (the stories are set in the Thirties). Each episode reveals the extent of Finlay’s medical knowledge and the limits of his understanding of the foibles of human nature when he is confronted by the inscrutable maladies of the townsfolk of Levenford.
