THE
BRITISH SHORTHAIR
CAT
Bamse

British shorthair is the largest cat amongst the shorthaired breeds. It is heavy buildt, large and muscular. Firm, short legs. The head is big and round with small ears. The male cats has well developed round cheeks. The eyes are big and round. The coat is thick, short and dense. See the STANDARD for more information.

There are many colours of british shorthairs, see the EMS Colour codes for more information.

The british shorthaired is usually calm, gentle, affectionate and a little lazy. He loves to play, but wants to decide by him self when, and for how long. You will hear the cat purr a lot, but seldom hear him miaow. In spite of it's size, the british cat has a weak voice. And he only uses his voice when it is necessary and appropriate. (When there's no food left for instance....) He can sometimes be independent and reserved, but can also surprise you by acting as a little kitten - but only for a short time.

He is strong, healthy and hardy. And he is very brave, and does not get scared of whatever.

These cats will give you lots of love. A moderately active cat, they are not destructive as a breed, adapting well to any size household. British are very easy going, and are affectionate to numerous people they consider family. And they get along well with other cats, as well as children and dogs. British shorthairs are very affectionate, quietly following you from room to room until they can settle by your side.

The british shorthaired cats are not very good at climbing trees, they like to stay with all four stumpy legs on the ground. As they are hardy cats, they can go outside even here in Norway, and will even catch mice and birds if the occacion appears. But it's not necessary to have outdoor possibilities for your cat. The british is so calm and quiet, that you can keep him inside in your apartment.

The british shorthaired cat is not so calm as the persian, but the calmest of the shorthaired breeds. It's far from so active, demanding and noisy as siamese and burmese cats. British have an expected kitten activity level up until they are about a year old. They start to slow down after a year. By the age of 4 to 6 years they are very sedentary. Also refered to as coach potatoes!!

The british shorthairs are very healthy and long lived. You can expect a british to live from 12 to 20 years.

A male weighs about 7-8 kilos, and the female 4-6 kilos.

Please remember: every cat has it's own personality. Even litter mates can be quite the opposite in character!
