Uhura's story
Paul Kupperberg – Writer
P7 Uhura picks up coded comm beams from Klingons!
Kirk places the ship on yellow standby alert before even listening to message. Uhura still has to put it through decoding and translation
The Klingon vessel hails Enterprise, want to talk to captain.
Kirk – They’re way out of their own territory.
Spock – most unusual. The Klingons have made a point of staying out of Fed space since the cessation of hostilities many years ago.
Klingon – you have entered protected Klingon space. you will turn back and leave this sector immediately!
Kirk – You ought to check your charts. This sector is well within Fed space. your presence is a violation of the treaty of
Klingon – Correction. The Cryblon system is a recognized Empire outpost. Turn back. You have been warned!
Spock – They are mistaken, captain. The Federation/Empire treaty allowed for no such
Spock – The Klingon ship appears to be hiding behind fourth planet, Tally, in a stationary orbit.
Uhura picks up a narrow-range comm-beam on the Klingon frequency, originating from the planet’s surface.
Spock – they would appear to be setting up a base. No strategic advantage that I can see.
Kirk – The Klingons know something we don’t.
The job requires experienced combat troops
Uhura – the readings from the Klingon ground station are inconsistent with standard matrix for a comm-beam. Something is very wrong. Klingon comm interference.
P12 Uhura takes shuttlecraft Keppler. Kirk and landing party are in grave peril. With the data she has they can be saved and the Klingon outpost destroyed. Klingons, at least two dozen of them, maybe more. The Klingons are employing an interference blanket, it could be scrambling tricorder readings. Klingons have discovered a way to use radiowaves to paralyze the human nervous system. The Klingon neural disruptor beam weapon has the landing party totally paralyzed, soon even their respiratory reflexes will be stopped. Uhura counters it with a spectrometer.
P16 Klingon warrior elite, guarding base of huts and satellite dishes, not like other Klingons Uhura has seen. Sentries typical Klingon militarism. Uhura vreeeeets one.
P16 Kentak! What has happened?!
We have been infiltrated! The commander will have our hides.
It is a lone human, and a mere female one at that!
Uhura kher-blaaams the Klingon base
By the dark stars, the woman, she did that?!
Stop her! Kill her! She must pay for her effrontery!
Klingon warship, most annoyed, comes after shuttle Keppler. Ker-vhaaams a hole in the Keppler.
The Klingon warship and neutral disruptor were dealt with through diplomatic channels. Frequency-disruption shields were added to all Fed vessels, rendering secret weapon useless.

Granite Cluster is in uncharted space near the Klingon Neutral Zone.  A unique astronomical phenomenon.
Enterprise receiving a distress call coming from inside the Klingon empire.
P4 Klingon colony Tarnak II. 12 light years inside Klingon space. Distress call – We are under heavy attack from unidentified vessel. Our weapons have been destroyed! Respond immediately!
There are no Klingon vessels in the area. None register on long-range sensors.
Three hours at warp eight for Enterprise across Klingon Neutral Zone
No artificial power, no humanoid life on Tarnak II.
Who would benefit from a war between the Fed and the Klingon Empire? The Romulans? They are currently allied with the Klingons. maybe a Klingon faction staged this themselves to force a confrontation with the Fed. Kirk doesn’t believe anyone, even the Klingons, would do this to their own people.
According to Klingon design principles, the computer facilities should be downstairs.
Someone purged all data before the computer banks were destroyed.
A Klingon battlecruiser, Captain Kang, is entering the system at warp speed. Their weapons are armed and have not responded to Enterprise hails.
You have transmitted your pathetic human lies! Your weapons leave a trace and a cowardly stench!
If you have the courage to attack Klingons, have the courage to admit your acts and face the consequences.
I give you one second to surrender your ship before I blow you out of space.
It is better this way. Klingons prefer to kill our enemies in combat, not slaughter them like animals.
You have tasted Klingon blood, now taste Klingon vengeance.
Spock reads Klingon transporter activity. 4 Klingons.
3 Enterprise security dead, two Klingons stunned, leave them for their crew to pick up later.
Kang’s ship less maneuverable in asteroid field, but use weapons to clear the way. Enterprise more than a match for that ship in open space.
Maximum power to weapons! Do not let them run! Fire!
The Klingon vessel has collided with an asteroid and lost warp power.
Tarnak II sparked a major interstellar incident. The Klingons are massing their forces near the neutral zone. The Klingons have cut off diplomatic relations. They are preparing for war.
The Organians were advanced enough to stop a Fed Klingon war cold. Presumably they would do it again.
Organians intervened when the conflict threatened their space, and their resolve has not been tested since.

The Chosen Part 2  Blood Enemies
Kevin J Ryan -  Writer
We may be looking at war with the Klingons. they firmly believe that the Enterprise destroyed their outpost. No luck reopening diplomatic relations. Starfleet has sent the Klingons the Enterprise’s reports, logs, and sensor records. But they don’t believe any of it. The Klingons see the attack as a direct challenge. They are mobilizing their forces. The Klingons have asked for Kirk.
Its not the first time the Klingons have called for Kirk’s blood.
P19 map of Klingon, Federation and Romulan space.
Fed simulations show the Fed could maintain a defense against both Klingon and Romulan Empires for approximately four months. The two empires could maintain hostilities for five to six months, depending on their level of cooperation.
The ship the Romulans sent is not the Klingon battlecruiser class currently in favor with Romulan command.
It is extremely unlikely that the Klingons would have shared information about a defeat.

Two weeks after attack on Klingon outpost.
A third party is trying to set the Klingons, Fed and Romulans against each other. Possibly Tholians or Gorn. The natives of Meta IV, who believe the rest of the galaxy is not real. They are the Chosen.
Kang comes into Romulan space to attack Enterprise in revenge.
Thousands of Klingons were slaughtered like animals! Honor demands we have our revenge!
There are too many good reasons to do battle to fight and die for nothing. And I will not be manipulated into battle. I will wait, briefly, but if this is a trick, both of your vessels will know my wrath.
Kang as agreed with the Romulan Commander Koram to extend his cloak around Enterprise, as long as he is permitted to keep his weapons locked on Enterprise.
McCoy – You can’t put us next to an angry Klingon with an itchy trigger finger.
Commander Kang has already transmitted his report to his government and the immediate treat of a Fed-Klingon war has dissipated.
Kang – After what they have done, they will be allowed to live?
Kang and Koram prefer a different type of justice, judgment has already been rendered.
Kra-thooom! The Metan ship.
Kang’s sash is on his left shoulder.

months ago the Klingons came. Their Fed spies learned of the prohibition against visiting Talos IV and decided what was bad for the Fed must be good for them. At first the Talosians were able to combat the Klingons with the powers of illusion but their defiance angered the Klingons. The Talosians cannot dominate a mind filled with strong emotions.
The Klingons treat Pike like some kind of lab animal
Koloth - Most of the Talosians are dead, it was quite entertaining to see creatures so unused to pain tortured, but we kept a few alive to teach their powers to my men. Now a handful have the power, but they’re teaching others.
Probe deeply and strike swiftly Kamar!

Kamar has Kirk relive Edith Keeler’s death, his strong emotions break the illusions
Apparently my dear Captain Koloth has never sampled the consequences of overconfidence

Klingons destroyed the defenseless Benecia Medical Station, an orbital facility, no survivors. They begged for mercy but the Klingons showed them none. At least four K’tinga class ships.

The Klingons don’t have the technology to make a field that absorbs pure energy from matter, electromagnetic forces that hold molecules together
Photon torpedoes weaken remaining ship’s shields so phasers can slip past and damage the ship

Koloth – Is there some sort of interference on the channel, Kirk? I seem to hear a most annoying buzzing.
Kirk – Say hello to the nice Klingon, Mr. Ambassador Averill Stanton.
Koloth – No need to apologize, Kirk. We have bureaucrats in the Klingon Empire as well. Though they do tend to be unusually accident prone! What I wouldn’t give at the moment for one simple, unassuming battle. This is unquestionably the single dullest assignment of my glorious career

Judgment Day!
Enterprise escorts Ambassador Averill Stanton to Magellan’s World, a minor frontier mining planet currently under jurisdictional dispute by both the Federation and the Klingon Empire.
Stanton - Klingon incompetence pure and simple caused the explosion. The Klingons’ so-called mining shortcuts are dangerous in the extreme!
Captain Koloth – Our mining techniques have brought Magellan’s World out of the stone age.
Koloth – Kirk likes to live dangerously, doesn’t he?
The Klingons are wining the competition here, they’d have nothing to gain from such sabotage.
Stanton with Miss Alisa Ruthven, miner. This is war, us against the Klingons! don’t want the Klingons to gain dominion over this planet? Stanton will help Ruthen save this world from Klingon tyranny.
Kirk and McCoy walk into Klingon mining camp without suitable escort. To talk with Koloth.
Koloth – I know why you are here, and I resent it. I will not allow you to accuse the Klingon Empire of sabotage! We have labored well for these backward peasants. We have dragged them from the pit of ignorance to the summit of knowledge! We have enlightened them, transformed them. How dare you think us guilty of betraying them? How dare you hold us in such little regard?
Koloth – If you do know who the saboteur is tell us, and they will face swift Klingon justice fro their crime!
Magellan – Sorry, I’ve seen your kind of justice! Not a very pretty sight.
Koval used to fly with Captain Koloth, until that underhanded earther Kirk filled Koloth’s ship with tribbles. Never could stand those oversexed little furballs. That’s when Koval quit the service and got into mining instead.
Alisa Ruthven gives Koval sedatives in his drink, drags him to mining facility to take the fall for her sabotage.
The Klingons win the voting on Magellan’s World. Koloth agrees to Magellan’s terms that the Fed would be able to purchase half the dilithium mined here at a reasonable price. The Klingons will cease the strip-mining that has been destroying the ecology, and adopt the Fed’s methods.
Koloth – Makes me wonder why we ever wanted this cursed planet in the first place! humans, feh!
Koloth has lizard pet.
Magellan stays on as governor.

Konom sometimes wishes he could be more Klingon, but it is against everything he believes in to strike this monstrous reptile, and thus become just as bad as the rest of the Klingons.
Konom hesitates to fire at beast, endangering landing party. He’d be everything he’s trying to deny. Nancy tells him it would be self-defense, not wanton violence and terrorizing.
Konom fires to help save Nancy – My god forgive me.
Konom’s added assault did the trick. The beast disintegrates. Konom is upset, Nancy comforts him.
Nancy pulls phaser to defend Kirk from threatening native, Konom grabs her arm – No, Nancy. There’s got to be a better way, a peaceful way.
Nancy considered a goddess by native leader Makora.
Narcotic herb from Gamma Trianguli IV incapacitates humans, but has no effect on Klingon physiognomy. Konom will not allow Makora to kill the Enterprise landing party, or take from him the woman he loves! Makora proposes a joust, but Konom refuses to fight and flees.
Konom can’t believe he’s running, he left Nancy.  But he can’t fight. I’m a Klingon, I should be tearing into these maniacs, but I’m a freak, I just cannot do it. If he calls the Enterprise for help, they’ll know he ran. He’s really failed everyone. Unless he turns around and goes back. The Fed gave me asylum from the Klingon people who couldn’t bear the shame I brought onto their murderous reputation. I owe them my life.
Konom was never a fighter, like Bearclaw, that’s what attracts Nancy to Konom. But she wonders why he ran, he could have saved them all.

But every so often there comes along one member of a race in whom bigotry festers like a canker, one such is James T Kirk. His hatred of Klingons as a whole, his vindictive and constant persecution, are legendary throughout the empire. indeed, as my ambassador has said, there can be no peace while Kirk lives. A human who would far prefer to see every Klingon in the galaxy dead! ever have the Klingons defended themselves. Fought to protect our interests. And ever has there been one who has treated us as if we ere the lowest of the low. James T Kirk. His hatred is unstinting and unswerving. I have heard tell that he is incapable of speaking the name of our race without adding the epithet ‘bastard’ immediately thereafter. What other reason but bigotry could there be besides that?
Kirk – Perhaps because you murdered my son in cold blood?
Emperor – I see. You call us bastard because in defending ourselves we killed your bastard. If you are going to attack me, I would recommend caution. I left a trail of bodies a kelicam wide in my ascension to the throne. I’ve defeated greater warriors than you.
Kirk – No, you haven’t. and that’s what’s really sticking in your craw. Klingons understand war. They live and breathe war. And you understand that casualties occur, that lives are lost. War sickens me. I don’t’ revel in it, as you do. But when forced to fight, my crew have not only proven a match for your people, but we’ve out-thought you, we’ve beaten you, every single time. See this hand, soft, white. Not as tough as a Klingon hand, not as strong, not as unrelenting in its grabs for power. But this hand has turned you away time and again. That’s why there is no peace while I live. Because I’m a symbol of the Klingons not being as tough or conquering or powerful as you think you are. While I live I represent every failure you ever had. I’m not the one who believes that he’s superior to another race, who wants to exterminate the member of that race who proves Klingons aren’t the mightiest people in the galaxy. That I’ve fought and killed Klingons doesn’t bother you. That I’ve embarrassed you, that you can never forgive me for. But you took my only son, and I can never forgive you for that, so we’re even.
Emperor – No, the life of one Klingon is worth a hundred human lives. Worth a hundred Nasgulian lives as well. Salla, do not think that your cavalier treatment of my ambassador has escaped me. both my memory and my reach are long. When this business is settled, we will settle business between yourselves.
The Emperor questions Commander Maltz, who wears Imperial Guard style collar and sash on right shoulder
Maltz – I was there for the slaughter of my commander and comrades. All we wanted was the secret was the secret of the Genesis torpedo, a devastating weapon that threatened to tilt the balance of power to the Fed. Had Kirk complied with our request, we would have gone on our way peacefully. Instead he pretended to bargain in good faith, tricked our men into boarding his ship, and then destroyed it. To deceit he added treachery, murdering Commander Kruge rather than accede to our simple request. He’s a criminal of the highest order.
Areel Shaw-Cogley – It sounds like a brutal experience, Sub-Commander Maltz.
Maltz – Brutality is nothing new to Klingons. particularly in our dealings with Captain Kirk.
Areel – You owe your life to the fact that Kirk did not kill you even when you begged him to.
Maltz – Klingons do not beg
Areel – If a member of Kirk’s crew had killed your son, and you had the chance to avenge yourself on Kirk by taking his life, would you have?
Maltz – Yes.
Areel – You are in disgrace, are you not, Maltz?
Maltz – In a manner of speaking.
Areel – You would say or do anything to achieve your previous rank, would you not?
Maltz has no answer.
Kirk detects that the circular disk from Ambassador’s honor sash the Emperor has on his belt is a bomb, and has beamed out. Sarek restrains the Ambassador while Spock twists arm of the Emperor. explosive planted by the Salla.
Sarek - The Emperor and the entire Empire owes Kirk. If one Klingon life is worth a hundred human lives, how much is your life worth? The life perhaps of one James T Kirk?
Emperor – The scales are balanced. But be warned. I will be watching you carefully and the slightest wrong move against the Klingon Empire will bring those precariously balanced scales crashing down upon you!
Ambassador to Starfleet officer – Kirk and the Nasgul have humiliated me. there is only one thing for this. Something must happen to make Kirk untip those scales. I want you to make sure that he’s in a situation where he has no choice but to offend the Klingons, and then we‘ll have him. You’re our highest placed, most deep spy, and your job is not over.
Spy – If you can’t trust a highly placed Klingon spy to make life even more miserable for Kirk than he already has, then whom can you trust?
There are beginnings of talks with the Klingons and the Fed.

P23 the Lamver unit is a device that could be the greatest boon to exploration since the creation of warp drive. Interdimensional gateway device. The lamver unit was developed as one of the first cooperative scientific ventures between the Fed and Klingon Empire. It represents not only a scientific breakthrough but a diplomatic one as well. The purpose of the unit is to create something that the Fed has been seeking for some time, interdimensional exploration, create a slipstream gateway to alternate universes. The lamver unit is placed near a star and converts the matter of the star into the energy required for a slipstream gateway. The transformation would take approximately one solar year. There was a great deal of debate about the unit. There were some who thought that it might be perverted into a weapon or access to alternate universes might mean new territories for races eager for conquest. But the cooperative nature of the venture. Kristenian The Worthy found on planet chosen for first test.

Starship Lafayette attacked while on escort duty by Needran System, located in neutral space right near Fed and Klingon frontiers, Hubble Frontier region. planets rich in vital resources required by the frontier colonies set up by both sides.
Cloaked Klingon vessel comes to their aid. Captain Anderson sends her thanks to the Klingons.
For the Klingons to be so cooperative, if the Klingons have designs on the Hubble Frontier Region, they must first establish a viable presence. They may not exhibit such admirable behavior later.
Raids on Needran shipping for months. When the Needrans asked for convoy protection, both Fed and Klingons sent in light cruisers to ride shotgun. Neither side wanted trade disrupted. According to treaty Fed and Klingons signed with the Needrans, both sides are entitled to equal representation. The Enterprise and a Klingon battle cruiser are sent when attacks escalate.
P7 qul HoH Klingon ship that aided Lafayette.
If Fed and Klingons both send more ships, not a desirable outcome.
P9 Captain Kedyn of the qul HoH – what I did was done for the good of the Klingon Empire, not your Fed. Instability here does not serve our purpose, or so say my superiors. A Klingon battle cruiser is on its way. When Commodore Khezri arrives I will no longer be in command of the Klingon Force.
Kedyn denies Kirk’s question on sensor data as a clever attempt to measure our technical capabilities.
Spock – Keydn did not seem entirely pleased with the Commodore’s impending arrival.
The Fed needs those colonies to compete with Klingon expansion, and those precious colonies will need the resources mined and ship from Needra. Transportation interests Fed and Klingon fleets conducting coordinating escort operations. Otherwise shipping might shut down, then the Klingons might decide to use force to get what they need.
P13 Imperial battlecruiser Qapla, the name translates as success.
Kirk – Optimists.
Commodore Khezri – My compliments on your Klingon pronunciation, Kirk. I doubt this ship is truly welcome, but we, like you, have interests to protect. Our mutual treaty with the Needrans does grant us equal status.
Khezri denies Kirk’s request to examine qul HoH sensor record of attack on Lafayette.
Khezri – Patience, Captain, patience. It wasn’t long ago that my people had a sizable price on your head.
Tyrion Legion, 20 star systems, up from nothing in a few short years, want to take their corner of the galaxy.
Khezri – The Klingon way is different from the Fed. We have a saying, as long as a mother gives milk, her life is holy. Needra nourishes the empire well.
Khezra – Why doesn’t Needra have weapons and armed vessels of their own? The riches of a system like yours demand protection. And with your great wealth, you certainly could have afforded to buy state-of-the-art weapons.
Lantine, Crown Melak of the Needran Government Assembly – We are not a warrior race like yours. We invite those who might be enemies and make them friends.
The qul HoH has been attacked while on routine patrol, need immediate assistance. Their battle damage is severe, communications are still scrambled. Khezri requests medical assistance. Many on qul HoH were killed.
Khezri wears cloak, sash over right shoulder.
Khezri – Klingon sickbays are not so well-equipped. It is no shame for Klingons to die in battle. And it is fortunate Captain Keydn escaped without serious injury.
The unknown ship appeared from nowhere and shredded the qul HoH’s defenses. The intruder would appear to posses a cloaking device superior to the Klingon system, effective weapons, and can attain greater velocities than Enterprise or Qapla.
One of the Klingons wants to talk to Kirk. It will remain confidential. Kirk won’t execute him, the senior defense officer, injured in left eye. Shields and sensors are his responsibility, battle readiness. It is not easy to sneak up on a Klingon warship. Two days ago there was an abnormal fluctuation on my calibration lock. Someone tampered with sensors to allow a cloaked vessel to escape detection. One other, and captain, has access to the equipment.
Keydn gives data on combined Klingon/Starfleet convoy to Tyrion informer Zandir. The perfect chance for the Tyrions to destroy the Enterprise and the Qapla. The Needrans would be conquered by the Tyrons and ruled by Keydn and Zandir, long before Klingon and Starfleet reinforcements could arrive.

Commodore Khezri already knew the sensors on the qul HoH were sabotaged, when Kirk informed him.
P1 Daig logged his suspicions and Khezri had already reviewed every log entry by every senior officer on that ship. Daig has nothing to worry about, under Zhezri’s command truth, even unpleasant truth, isn’t grounds for execution.
McCoy – An honorable Klingon? What’s this universe coming to? We could be on the brink of a real breakthrough in relations with the Klingons.
Kirk – There’s been some real cooperation between us, and Khezri, I think we’re finally learning to trust each other.
The Klingon cruiser Qapla leaves orbit, for the region where both the Lafayette and qul HoH were attacked. ignoring Enterprise hails.
A combined Klingon/Starfleet convoy en route.
Khezri told Keydn there would be a convoy.
Keeping a vessel the size of the cruiser Qapla cloaked when there in no enemy in range is a huge power drain.
The Klingons can detect the Tyrion’s cloaked ships, revealing Keydn is a traitor.
Khezri destroys one Tyrion ship, the other two flee at warp 15.
Keydn – I invoke the warrior’s right of quick execution.
With a little persuasion Captain Keydn revealed that the Tyrion fleet has nine of their large ships, eight remaining.
Khezri to Kirk – Our mutual enemy if far from invincible. Let us plan a massive pre-emptive strike on the Tyrions together.
Spock – There is some military logic in such a strike at their prime base.
Khezri – Starfleet power is defensive, I know, Starfleet’s major weakness. Force may be needed, Kirk. Are you ready to use it? Our patience has limits. And what about Zandir, it was interesting to find that he was Keydn’s co-conspirator.
Miss Gallan to Zandir – I’m just as Fed up with the Fed and the Klingons as you are. I could turn you over to the Klingons. I bet they’d have some fun with you.
The Fed-Klingon fleet is due at Needra within three days.
Kirk to Khezri – Your insistence on offensive action forced me to try this intelligence gathering mission without your participation.
Khezri – Bold action worthy of a Klingon, my compliments, Kirk. The Tyrions are coming and we will have to fight them, the only question is where.
Kirk – Maybe we can stop the Tyrions without firing a shot, wouldn’t that drive Khezri nuts?
Enterprise and Klingons go toward Tyrion Defense Zone together.
Khezri – have you come to your senses yet, Kirk? A devastating first strike is our best chance for quick, painless victory. I know you humans are squeamish about spilling your own blood.
Kirk – Isn’t there a Klingon proverb that goes
The man too anxious to spill blood should beware of cutting his own throat?
Khezri – Well said, but be warned, I will not let your reticence drag us down to defeat.
Khezri and the Qapla cloak going into battle with the Enterprise, against the Tyrions, decloaks, weapons at full power, when Tyrion ships powerless.
Khezri – I’m removing a blight, the Tyrions are helpless.
Qapla continues attack approach, cuts communications with Enterprise. Kirk moves Enterprise in path of Qapla, protecting Tyrions, fires across Qapla’s bow. Qapla veers away.
Khezri – Kirk, this is no time for weak human mercy. We must seize the chance to finish off our common enemy.
Kirk – Have you forgotten Innaxx 5, Khezri? I bet your emperor hasn’t. your brutal defeat humiliated the Innaxxi. What little was left wasn’t even worth occupying. But it took only six years for them to recover enough to destroy a dozen Klingon outposts and kill thousands of your people.
Kirk gets the Tyrions to sit down and talk.
P24 Rutz to Khezri – How will you explain this to the Emperor?
Khezri – Hmmm. It was the only way to snuff a viper in its cradle.
Rutz – Nice turn of phrase, sir. What if he doesn’t believe you?
Khezri – Then you and I face an abrupt change in our fortunes, Rutz.
Kirk – The Organians predicted years ago that someday there’d be peace with the Klingons. this incident could be another harbinger of improved relations.

Skellen Three, a sparsely populated planet in non-aligned space. Mining colony has expressed interest in Fed affiliation. This middle of nowhere happens to fall between Klingon and Fed frontiers. Strategic location, to say the lest.
The manager, froglike Mr. Jebitok, believes covert Klingons are responsible for theft, sabotage and terrorism. Unmarked ships of Klingon design are skulking around the system, Klingon agents sighted on Skellen. SF Admiral Tomlinson was informed, but Kirk hasn’t heard about it. Bird of prey caught on freighter visual recording.
The Klingons have as much right to be here as Fed does. Why are they being so sneaky?
Fire-fang from Minott 6, one of the most dangerous creatures in the galaxy, four headed snake.
P15 Grax, Klingon male, working with Ravia, a Nasgul, older sister of the Salla Vlagro. Ravia is leader, Domine, of other, agricultural colony, on Skellen Three. Grax supplies her with weapons.
Never keep me waiting like that again. not unless you’ve got a better weapons supplier than me.
Next shipment in five days. It’s not easy for Grax to get the stuff out of Klingon space.
Grax’s suppliers are reliable, they are fellow Klingons who agree with Grax that the Empire is diluting its blood hate of the Fed. We will build a new empire that will sweep out the old order.
Grax’s bird of prey is on the ground on Skellen, at Skellen docking facility, unbeknownst to authorities.
Harry Mudd overhears Grax and Ravia plotting conquest. Mudd escapes in his ship, pursued by Grax in bird of prey. Enterprise rescues Mudd, fires at Grax, who withdraws.

At Ridge Road mine site, in underground structure well camouflaged, found a splintered shipping container, with Klingon printing. Someone tried to obliterate it. ties the Klingons in to whatever’s going on.
Commodore Khezri enters Skellen system. Closing fast. Hails Enterprise.
Kirk – We know about the sale o f Klingon weapons to troublemakers on Skellen 3. If this is a prelude to a Klingon incursion
Khezri – The Empire has no such plot in mind. Those weapons were stolen by a group of reactionary renegades bent on replacing the Emperor and his council with a faction more eager for war with the Federation. They sought to arm criminals like Domine Ravia and form an unholy alliance. I can assure you that this scheme has been terminated, along with those behind it. except for one individual who you know as Starfleet Admiral Tomlinson. Tomlinson was a Klingon mole planted inside Starfleet years ago, quite successfully I might add. He turned and became a double agent working for the conspiracy against the Emperor. We want him back so he can be dealt with.
38 Tomlinson, aka Kerzuk, will receive Starfleet justice. Kerzuk has escaped true justice for his crimes against the Empire.
Khezri has persuaded Ravia to return the stolen weapons, she and her group will depart Skellen in hours. Maria Martinez will take over the mining colony.

Debt of Honor

Post Doomsday Device, SOS from near Romulan Neutral Zone.
Upper vessel is a cruiser of Klingon design, roughly comparable in size and capability to Enterprise. Exterior markings indicate it is Romulan. This is consistent with intelligence reports of significant technology and equipment transfers between the two empires. the other part of ship, attached under bridge bulb, is its predecessor, a standard configuration bird of prey. Unsuccessful encounter with Doomsday Device.
Post V'ger
Trio of heavy cruisers taken out by V'ger. those targets suffered a complete mass to energy transmutation before being absorbed into V'ger's data storage network.
The Enterprise retraces V'ger's route, encounters debris, structural components of a Klingon dreadnought. This appears to be residue of a more conventional confrontation. Aboard Klingon vessel most impressive piece of technology, state of the Klingon art. Huge power systems mated to standard engines, stacked lasing crystals, a scanning array that's totally dedicated to fire control, contained within a hull that's twice Enterprise size yet clearly designed for a minimal crew and a rudimentary adaptation of the Romulan cloaking device. It's a gun platform, too big and cumbersome for use in any fleet engagement, only one thing it could be good for, blowing holes in planets, a terror weapon. Pure and simple. Knowing the Klingons, not a deterrent, but a key element of a preemptive, surprise first strike scenario.
Romulan intelligence has been predicting for some while a growing schism between the two main branches of the Klingon race. With those possessing a smooth cranium losing status to their age-old rivals, who both Rom Empire and Federation have been encountering more and more frequently of late, whose skull structure is more articulated.
Klingons don't like failure, even when it isn't their own fault.
The fact of the vessels existence would cause Romulans to go to war without a moment's hesitation and not stop until every last Klingon was eradicated.
The Klingons aren't fools, they had to know that. They must have gambled that the fact of the gunship's existence would be sufficient to deter any such response. For all we know the Doomsday Device gave them the idea. The gunship was attacked by creatures. We'll take full-spectrum schematics of the gun, a set for Kirk and a set for Romulans. Let the Klingons know, and balance of terror.

Kor - To my ship and crew must go the honor of being, to use that phrase of yours, Kirk, the stalking horse. The bait to lure our enemy into an attack. The lose of the dreadnought during the V'ger encounter caused my people an irredeemable disgrace. As a consequence, our rival Klingons gained ascendancy in the High Council. And we, as a race, were discommoded. Banished to the farthest reaches of the Empire, stripped of the right to call ourselves Klingon. Stripped of our honor. The council will never rescind that order, the political cost would be too great. But whatever they say we must know the truth. Kor's ship, the Revenge. D7-M.
Seeing Jamie Finney in Federation colors, Kor's crew's first instinct would be to kill.
Khadri - you were fairly challenged, I was fairly defeated. It is an honor to serve.
The Klingons are our enemies but this is a golden opportunity to take a look at their culture from the inside. Regardless of government policy, we need bridges built between our two peoples.
The Klingons put up a valiant fight against creatures. Enterprise beams Klingons to safety.
How dare you steal us away from our comrades in the midst of honorable battle?!
Kirk and Kor's orders.
68 Hroth, Klingon male - A human sentiment, unworthy of the moment and the man. It was Kor's duty to remain with the Revenge protecting our withdrawal until he knew all his crew were safe. But it shall not be forgotten that our officers chose to stand with him. And that the female who had earned Khadri's place chose to return to his side. It may be that you are not so spineless, weak and degenerate a race as we have been taught. In honor, our captain pledged our service in this enterprise. We shall not foreswear his memory.
Hroth - They will bleed, these creatures who have claimed our ship and captain. By all we hold holy, they will burn.
The Klingons have edged weapons.
Kor and Finney and his ship survive, pulled in to alien mothership.
Lt Finney in Klingon uniform, Kor - she has brought honor to it and her name. Without her we would not have survived this long.
The Klingons are restless. They want to board the alien and show the critters a real fight.
The Scott's version of the earlier Klingon cannon, and the detonation of the Revenge's antimatter core, close rift in space critters are coming through.
Kor - Finney, there is no risk, since the discommodation of my people, we have been assigned to the farthest fringes of the Empire. it is the functional equivalent of banishment. Physically our races are much the same. You could easily pass for Klingon, albeit a small one. And you have already proven you possess the courage of a warrior. You have my word, none of my crew will betray you. What more perfect means to learn about us, and we about you, without compromising the security of either state?
Kor, a decorated Klingon fleet commander.
On my deck, boy, you had best be prepared to back such insolence with steel.
Kor - Occasionally a true commander must think in broader terms than the specifics of state policy and interpret his oath of loyalty and duty in new, perhaps revolutionary ways. consider this an opportunity, long overdue, for our races to get to know one another. And perhaps take first fledgling step towards the fulfillment of the Organian prophecy that one day the Fed and Empire would be both allies and friends.

Kevin J. Ryan - writer
SD 8544.9
A working phase inverter would have eliminated the usefulness of any known cloaking technology. The Defiant, SD 5693.2, was testing the new technology. The loss of the Defiant caused Fed to abandon the phase inversion experiments. Could also have revolutionized interstellar travel.
Theragan works by deadening some nerve endings in the central nervous system. Won't work against prolonged exposure of phase inversion. Theragan is a nerve gas in its pure form, long term use could be dangerous. Intoxicating effects.
Romulan agent impersonates Fed scientist Dr. Allison Juram. The Romulan Empire can not allow the Fed to have the results of the interphase experiment. If she destroys the Enterprise and the Defiant with the inverters on-line, the ripple effect will be catastrophic for the Fed and the Tholians. The Tholians will blame the Fed, the resulting war between the Tholians and the Fed will eventually lead to a Klingon attack on a weakened Fed. When the time is right, the Romulan Empire will seize power on a scale never before seen in the galaxy.

The Klingons are interested in Mardelva because of reputation for superior shipbuilding. Their new EX-300, about the size of a bird of prey. A cloaking device that’s three times as effective as the best Klingons and Romulans have, using fifty percent less power.
To be blunt the Fed has never taken to Klingon threat to Mardelva seriously. Perhaps the rebels are taking the stolen EX-300 to the Klingons. if the Klingons get their hands on this new technology, it will tip the balance of power in their favor, perhaps irrevocably.
Starfleet Command is forced to agree with the Mardelvans, the Enterprise will take all possible steps to keep the EX-300 out of Klingon hands. Bring it back or destroy it.
Klaa taps his fingers on command chair armrest.
Klaa thinks – What a shame I can only kill Kirk once.
Klaa – I was considering strategy.
Vixis – How to kill Kirk again?
Battlecrusier de-cloaks off port stern. Commodore Khezri. Klaa and Vixis transport over to Khezri.
Klaa – We are surprised to see you, sir. to what do we owe this visit?
Khezri – Your report on your encounter with Kirk.
Klaa – You came all this way to compliment us, sir?
Khezri – More like reprimand. Do you have any idea why Kirk and his ship are even here?
Klaa – No, sir.
Khezri -  Hasn’t it occurred to you that might be important to know?
Klaa – Yes, Commodore.
Khezri – With more stealth and less bluster, you may find out. And with luck, you will live to make more such mistakes. We have never paid much attention to these Mardelvans before, perhaps that is my mistake.
Klaa shocked at this admission.
Long-range sensors show the Enterprise leaving Mardelva.
Khezri – Ahh, so the game resumes. You have a chance to redeem yourself, Klaa. Kirkis after something, I want to know what it is before he finds it.
Klaa runs out.
Klaa overhears Kirk regarding the EX-300.
Klaa – We face not only the Enterprise my love, but a new lethal and ruthless enemy, as well.
Vixis – Yet we must be cautious. Khezri must have no excuse to damage your career.
Klaa – Would you have me back away from our adversaries?
Vixis -  Never, my love. But we must engage when it is best for us. My hunger must be satisfied!
Klaa – And now, Vixis, my blood runs hot.
Klaa and Vixis had feast, brown animal carcass, purple octopus, violet tubers, russet potatoes, blue cranberry sauce. Use d’k tagh, small ax, and triangular four prong forks. Skulls and weapons on walls of quarters and an animal skin.
Klaa – I’ve always hated battle on an empty stomach!
Vixis – So I have. A well-fed warrior is a strong warrior.
Klaa’s ship intercepts another message for Enterprise.
The EX-300, after attacking another Mardelvan outpost, heads for Klingon space. Enterprise heads directly for Klingon space.
Klaa cloaks, sets course to intercept, two enemies for the price of one. If Kirk so much as brushes a toe into Klingon territory, he and his ship will be reduced to space dust!
Klaa and Vixis wear communicators on upper arms with narrow bands. Klaa’s is square, on right arm, Vixis, triangular, on left.

Klaa dreams of destroying Kirk and Enterprise, after he has accepted Kirk’s surrender.
Vixis in dream – Show no mercy, my love.
Klaa – Time to restore my honor. Victory is ours.
Klaa had his d’k tagh sheathed at his neck.
Vixis kicks dreaming Klaa out of bed. She told him she would if he blew up the Enterprise in his sleep one more time! Furs, sheets, mattress, pillows.
Klaa – I’m sick of Kirk haunting me. I’ve got to get him.
Vixis – Patience, my love! All in good time.
Third Mardelvan outpost destroyed by stolen ship headed for Klingon space.
The EX-300 is found waiting right on the edge of Klingon territory. Once the EX-300 crosses into Klingon territory, Enterprise can’t go after it without starting an interstellar war.
Klaa – Maintain maximum cloaking. Damn that Kirk! So close to our space! He must know we’re following him. He’s taunting me!
Vixis – If he is, he’ll pay dearly soon enough.
Kirk – We are keeping a sharp eye out for cloaked Klingon ships in the area.
Scott – those Klingon devils, they must’ve set this trap.
Mardelvan Vayla – The Klingons wouldn’t oblige us with an act of overt aggression, so we created one ourselves. When this ship blows up the Fed will hold the Klingons responsible. They’ll finally do something, and Mardelva will be safe.
The Mardelvan conspirators Vayla, Garad face harsh judgment for destroying three outposts.
Kirk – Enterprise to Captain Klaa, sorry I wasn’t able to give you an excuse to shoot. Maybe some other time. Until then, have a nice day.
Klaa – Damn you, Kirrrrk!

The Aegis chooses agents from all over, humans aren’t the only species capable of getting themselves into trouble. They’ve decided that what the Aegis doe is wrong. They are free to leave, but they also want to destroy the Aegis. They are fanatics, intent on undoing everything the Aegis has ever done. Civilization as we know it could disappear. Lots of Aegis interventions have failed, however well-intentioned, made things worse instead of better.
Evad – No one is wise enough to meddle this way, not even the Aegis.
The Aegis wanted to prevent Starfleet abrupt abandonment of the protomatter project. The Thevosians would have eventually sold it to the Romulans, who would have used it to attack the Klingons, eventually dragging the Fed into a galactic war.
Evad starts to strangle Chekov when she thinks he lied about the ship being operational.
The Aegis rebels are remanded to Gary Seven’s custody, sent home for trial.

Time Crime Part Two: Nightmares
Writer: Howard Weinstein
Something in the Klingons’ past seems to have been changed.
Spock, Lt. Worf and David Marcus view original Klingon history and the current altered timeline from Guardian of Forever.
Lt. Worf gardens fresh fruit on Enterprise.
Worf – Imagine if someone told you that you were completely different, for thousands of years you and all your ancestors ate your young! They were not the poets an scientists and builders that I know as Klingons.
Klingon spice fruit
McCoy – Klingons are as devoted to honor and duty as anybody in the galaxy.
Klingon Ambassador Kor, a renowned scholar of his homeworld’s history has joined Spock to review the Guardian’s records of the past.
P14 Khartan must be the key. He is revered as the leader who unified our society and set us on the road to peace. 650 years ago. His funeral. More a celebration than a dirge, he lived long and well, expired in his sleep. And left a foundation of peace that has lasted to this day.
In the correct timeline, Khartan was assassinated at mid-life, with Klingon society poised at the brink of a peace treaty that was never meant to be. His death shattered all possibility of peaceful unity. A forty year civil war initiated the brutal lineage leading to contemporary Klingon empire.
Illustration of Klingons riding saurian beasts. Fighting with various bladed weapons.
To the Klingon people, the Khartan that lived to old age was earth’s Christ, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Chiang Shih all in one, savior, leader, father figure.
P17 there was a conspiracy, led by Zorjak, the chief of Khartan’s palace guard. A warrior apparently determined to preserve his place in a society he feared was about to change drastically. The murder happened during the annual festival of honor, a traditional harvest celebration dating back to ancient times.
To save the Romulan people from genocide, this Khartan must die. Ironic is it not. That a peacemaker will have to die to set time to rights?
The correct timeline has the Fed and the Roms and the Klingons constantly on the verge of war.
P21 Chairman K’Uda - The Klingon Confederation cherishes itts ties to the Fed and its people. We cherish the peace we share. But the billions of lives lost in a conflict that should not have happened cannot be dismissed as abstract. Therefore, and will great reluctance, the council concurs with the recommendations of Captain Spock and Ambassador Kor, an effort must be made to reestablish the original timeline.

Worf feels guilty about Khartan, killing a great Klingon leader, ending a reign of peace before it could begin. Duty and honor now seem hollow concepts. I despise what I did. Our mission failed.
Despite the death of Khartan, the correct timeline has not been restored. Kor and Spock spent the entire trip back to earth trying to figure out what went wrong. Those tampering with time have changed more than one event.
P4 They have found that Azeek the Potent was never born. A Klingon warlord, supposed t have been born some 400 years ago. Potent refers to his ability to avoid warfare, fathered 24 sons. Azeek’s sons and their heirs had more taste for battle than their patriarch. They established a lineage of leadership that led eventually to the bellicose Klingon Empire.
P6 the assassination of a particularly brutal Klingon leader named Baraga, some 200 years after Khartan’s death. Saving Baraga will restore proper time. Had Khartan not been assassinated , Baraga would not have been risen to power. Ambassador Kor has researched the details. after Khartan’s assassination came two centuries of chaos, petty tyrants in a succession of wars, until Baraga took power five hundred years ago, a tyrant whose bloodlust exceeded all who’d ruled before him. With the first modern war machines, he was the first Klingon despot with a real chance to conquer the entire planet, until his own death in a sabotaged flyer. After he was killed he became a martyr, a savage holocaust was launched against his opponents. his successors did not foresee the popular uprising against them, against the death and destruction. They were overthrown, the healing began, the second chance for peace was not wasted. But that was the wrong timeline. Baraga escaped assassination, his oppressive rule continued until he was overthrown in undemocratic fashion. No reign of terror, no backlash. Klingon society went on to evolve into a brutal but viable 23rd century interstellar empire.
SD 8530.1 Klingons and the Fed Council approve second attempt to correct the timeline. The other Klingon government would never permit a mission affecting its very existence.

If Baraga survived the assassination attempt then the timeline should be corrected.
P16 Admiral K’Uda – Kor! What are you doing in Fed space?! You’re supposed to be patrolling the Ga’chuk sector!
Kirk - Even the Klingon government wouldn’t be foolhardy enough to try altering time for strategic advantage.
Divak – I’ve watched our Empire grow feeble and impotent, a few years ago, an imbecile like Gorkon the Coward would have been killed before he could do damage. Now his faction gains allies, he may even rule one day. pursuing peace overtures with your Federation. The Romulans have always believed as de we strongest of the Klingon people, that peace grows from power, and power grows from the end of a weapon.
We few Klingons with clear sight joined with a small band of Romulans bold enough to go along with our plan.
And what tribble brained plan was that?
If the Klingon people no longer had the stomach for battle, we set out to give them the peace they whimpered for so spinelessly. By changing history, and creating an alternate reality where two weak peace-loving societies, the Klingons and the Federation, could be defeated by a single strong one decided to conquest. We will try again.
No one speaks for Kor!
If we do not act now, K’Uda, at best, you and I and the entire Klingon leadership will wind up on Rura Penthe, with the poorest of accommodations, I assure you. At worst, we may bring about the immediate destruction of the Klingon Empire for now and all time to come.

The Ukaran Sector was recently the site of spirited, and so far peaceful competition between the Fed and the Klingon Empire. Both building colonies in an effort to become the dominant presence in this largely unexplored and unsettled part of the galaxy.
3 Excelsior was the last Starfleet ship to visit the area, and the first to send a landing party down to Zantak Prime for a quick look around. Zantak Prime is the main crossroads on the Ukaran frontier. It’s location made it one of the first places in the sector to be settled. A bustling port of call and center of commerce, not all of it legal. Zantak City. The Ukaran sector is unstable enough without Klingon – Federation hostilities.
Main task- investigate rumors of problems with the Klingon colonies in the Ukaran sector. The Fed needs to know, militarily and politically. These problems might indicate growing pains or the disintegration of the Klingon Empire. Rumors of Ukaran sector Klingon colonies failing. One already gone, one never started, one, on Omega Proxani II just closed. Proxani colonists told to return home, they came to Zantak Prime instead, just waiting, very angry, may start their own colony. This makes big Klingons on homeworld very angry. Disgruntled Klingons threatening to start a breakaway colony.
Klingons don’t always understand the difference between espionage and reconnaissance.

The Klingon colonists on Zantak who tried to tear ex-Starfleet Intelligence Captain Nafaritaj Nolli apart were to be the recipients of an item he had.
The Klingon Empire may be wounded, but it’s not dead. There’s nothing more dangerous than a wounded animal.
The Federation might want to know what’s’ going on with those Klingon colonists. A Fed-Klingon war in this sector, the Ukaran Sector, would be bad for business. Based on what I saw of the Klingon effort, I’m betting on the Federation.
Orana Dellamonica was hired by Nolli to buy an icon stolen from the Klingons, it was supposed to help bring down the whole damned empire. the Sponauglans stole it, Nolli hired them to get the Klingon icon to Rahak, then he paid Rahak to sell the icon to Orana. Orana was supposed to leave Zantak, rendezvous with Nolli in space.
Orana didn’t do the job just for the money, she’s hated the Klingons for years, ever since they convicted her on trumped-up smuggling charges. Thy awarded her an open-ended stay at one of their lovely prison colonies. Mining desolate desert world. She escaped.
Nolli was a Klingon specialist, now a wanted man. Four months ago he was relieved of duty for erratic behavior, including apparent plots to overthrow the Klingon government. He’s very good at what he does, and very dangerous. He could start a war between the Klingons and the Fed.

The tIq’a’ was made by a blind artisan who foretold the death of Kahless the Unforgettable. Legend reports that the icon was completed on the day Kahless died. It is said to contain bone fragments and hair taken from Kahless, and sealed in secret compartments. Reading indicate an age of 1500 years, consistent with the date of Kahless’ death. Made of an alloy known to have been used by Klingon artisans of that time. It does contain Klingon organic material within. The tIq’a’ has been kept at an ancient monastery on Boreth. Klingon clerics have waited there for centuries. Kahless, it is believed, will return from Sto-Vo-Kor, the heroic Klingon afterlife.
