Our generation has seen an explosion of jobs in technology and high technology including computers and many people who are looking to their future are considering jobs in the high-tech fields. Is this the way to go?
Possibly. If you are fortunate enough to be one of those who succeeds then you will be happy that you went into it. However, although the success stories are highlighted in the press there are a tremendous number of failures as well. There are also people who have failed several times before they succeeded by sheer persistence they were ultimately able to succeed, but this certainly does not mean that anybody can succeed.
The Computer Gemach is a way of seeing whether people can persist with computer work before going into it.
The high-tech industry has its ups and downs and even if you would be able to succeed there's no guarantee that you can succeed at any given time.
If you are working for a company, it is difficult to predict when there will be layoffs and mass layoffs or whether they will be hiring. You will never know.
You also hear stories about the high salaries. That is true. There are many people who do receive high salaries but there are an equal number of people who receive abysmally low salaries. There are also others who do come home with a very high salary but only after working very long hours so that the salary per hour is quite low.
Programmers and certain other people in the high-tech industry often work under a tremendous amount of pressure for employers who do not understand the need for taking more time in order to put out a satisfactory product. Software is sometimes issued before it is really ready and the complaints come back to the programmer.
The bottom line is that although the high-tech industry seems to be very attractive, it is questionable whether it is for everyone and it is questionable whether somebody who wants stability or job security should go into it. If you feel free with speculating about your future with the hope of a higher than usual salary without feeling very concerned if your hopes do not bear fruit, then maybe it is a job to consider.
