Because the battery life of a laptop is limited, some laptops feature a special monitor switch.
When the laptop is opened and the monitor faces you, then the monitor is ready for use.
Some laptops go into the sleep or hibernation mode, turn off the monitor, when the laptop is closed. To be turned on automatically you open up the monitor when you open up the computer again.
Some laptop monitors have to be turned on when you open up the computer. Check your user's manual for information.
The indicator light in some laptops can be viewed when the laptop cover is closed. In this way you can see whether the monitor is on, in hibernation or sleep mode, or if it is off.
