There may be a good reason for a schoolchild to give a teacher an apple. She may not be making a high enough salary to buy her own apple.

Perhaps that's also why the pictures show that she is so excited about receiving that magnanimous gift.

Why are salaries low?

You've heard it all before. There are endless excuses for maintaining low teacher salaries:

• It's just a job for women (why don't the feminists scream about this one?)
• It's an easy job in which you just work in the morning
• A period is only 45 minutes, so add 1/3 to the hourly rate
• Where else can you get so many paid vacations?
  • You get off for all holidays
  • You get off for the entire summer
  • You get off for other days as well
  • You get lots of vacation days
• The children don't learn anything anyhow, so you're not doing your work
• You don't like the salary? There are plenty of other teachers who can replace you
• You should be doing this work out of love for the next generation
• You're only working in order to get out of the house
• If you want a high-paid job, go ahead and get one
• It's your choice
• There's more to a job than just money. Is that all you care about?
