Children have never been very good at listening to their elders, but they have never failed to imitate them. - James Baldwin |
The best inheritance a person can give to his children is a few minutes of his time each day - O. A. Battista |
Your children might do things differently from you, but after living with you for the first two decades of their lives, they should certainly be able to part from you with an appreciation for their parents' wonderful information, skills and abilities. Whether they continue in your footsteps is not the issue at this point. It is only necessary for them to be exposed to the things you offer, so that they can have a positive feeling for their parents.
This can only be done if you share your background with your children in an exciting, positive, and worthwhile way - not as lessons, not as mere "quality time," but as issues that are important for you. It should be taught as part of your life. It should be presented on a regular, ongoing, daily basis, so that they know, understand, and appreciate who you are and who you were.
But, you say, your children are not really interested in the things that you have to tell them.
Perhaps. However, it usually depends to a large part on how it is presented.
If it is presented in a positive and exciting manner then they will be interested. They need to understand that they turned out the way they did because of your own experiences.
