There is no question that it is a good idea to raise a child with more than one language. However, in certain circumstances, this is not advisable.
Even under the best of circumstances, the following considerations should be applied:
You raise a bilingual child for his benefit and advantage.
At a certain point, the problems caused by raising a child as a bilingual may outweigh the potential benefits.
In this regard, each family is different, and the efforts exerted to raise vary, as well as the degree to which the child accepts this effort.
While raising a bilingual, it is important to stop for an introspection every so often. During this time it is important to evaluate whether the benefits are concomitant with the effort.
If it is worth it for a child to raised as a bilingual - and in most cases this is indeed the case - then by all means do so. However, if it is causing problems, strife, interference, ill will, or other serious negative factors, then it may be a good idea to cut back on the bilingualism.
Of course, as with any other situation, it is wise to consult with others in this regard - especially with parents who have raised their children as successful bilinguals.
