Developing your counseling skills

What is the best way to develop your counseling skills?

The activities that you learned in school should prepare you for eliciting reactions from people. They do seem to work in school settings. Yet, when you go into the field, those same skills don't necessarily work.

You may have been told to reflect what your client says, to show empathy, to show that you agree with them, or to cause them to react in a positive way. These options are supposed to help the clients open up and speak to you. What happens when they don't work?

Experience does help in these cases. Your skills will develop over time, but you should be in touch with others in order to assure that you are on the right track.

The counseling section of website and the Jewish Psych Forum will give you some additional hints. In addition, this website is a dynamic entity, with additional hints added periodically. Stay in touch.
