There are several requirements for being a successful counselor:
For starters, it is important to refrain from doing things only according to the book (or according to this website). Try to be spontaneous in your way of doing things. Improvise things by using your intuition.
This does not necessarily mean that you should reject your studies or your experience. However, sometimes it helps to break away from the mold. You, too, must act out of the box.
Let issues settle for a while, and then formulate your own ideas and concepts. Your fresh approach may help you do things differently, and thus you can help your client try a different approach.
Work with other people. Although counselors constantly come in contact with clients, it can nonetheless be a very lonesome position. Join an international on-line forum such as Jewish Psych or a committee of counselors or consultants in your area or region. You will then be able to work more easily with your clients.
