Different Kinds of Talk

This page is still under construction.

There are various different kinds of talk.

Emotional talk. Emotional talk really has no substance in reality. Since it does not present the facts in an objective way, the information is biased and it only serves a purpose of trying to persuade people to do things in a certain way. However, that way that it persuades people to do things is not necessarily the best and it will not necessarily result in a wise decision.

A serious discussion can be destroyed by appealing to emotion and once a person has appealed to emotion there is no way to turn it around and to say okay I will no longer appeal to emotion. I'll handle things or I'll discuss things in a different way. Once you've already appealed to emotion that discussion has been destroyed and it is nearly impossible to undo it and to create a good discussion anymore.

Teacher talk. Teachers don't really want to fix up problems with students. Neither does the school administration. They just want everything to be smooth. They want the classroom teaching to continue. They want the parents to be quiet. Therefore, there is little that can be done in a classroom and the school officials don't really try to do anything worthwhile.

A teacher will usually do something to neutralize the disturbing influence of a child. After neutralizing the influence the teacher can go on with her work.

Sometimes people try to handle but not fix situations by using teacher talk and after they do use this teacher talk they are in a position that is similar to that of the emotional talk. They can no longer say okay let's start all over again. Discussions don't work that way.

Clearly, various forms of talk do not necessarily lead to productive or constructive results. To the contrary, they may impede a good discussion which could lead to a constructive result.

Does that mean that talk is always inefficient, poor, or misleading or a negative influence on progress?

Not necessarily.

A talk which leads to a proper discussion held according to proper guidelines will be able to result in a desireable result.

However, talk for its own sake or emotional talk or teacher talk is never of value.

Where do you want to go now?
