Teeth

Some people go to great pains to make sure that their teeth look good.

They may get orthodonture which is expensive, but not that painful or they might take other corrective steps that are more painful in order to make their teeth look good.

This does not mean that it's not warranted in many cases. After all, bad or discolored teeth can have a definite affect on a person's appearance and corrective work on a person's teeth can not only affect their appearance but also their self-esteem.

But that's precisely the point.

In some cases after the person's teeth look better, the person thinks only about their appearance. They think much more about the appearance. They forget about other things. They think about themselves and how they look. This Narcissistic attitude was caused by an improvement in the way they look.

In other words, it created a tradeoff. They fixed up one problem by making another one.

That means that after all of the effort, possibly the pain, and certainly the money that was expended, it is questionable whether the person came out ahead as they improved in one way and regressed in a different way.

Before considering any esthetic dental work or corrective surgery which is purely for esthetics, perhaps it would be a good idea to discuss with the person the deeper reasons for doing it and if these reasons may lead to other problems, then the corrective work should certainly be rethought and possibly reconsidered.
