Wait
Every Moment
Life is like a taxi.
The meter just keeps a-ticking
whether you are getting somewhere
or just standing still
- Lou Erickson
Psychologist William Marston
asked three thousand people,
"What Have You To Live For?"
94% were simply enduring the present
while they waited for the future…
waited for something to happen…
waited for the children to grow up and leave home…
waited for next year…
waited for retirement…
waited for a better time…
waited for someone to die…
waited for tomorrow,
unable to see
that all anyone has is today
- this day
- because yesterday is gone
and tomorrow exists only in hope.
- J.M. Drescher

Although there are many merits to waiting, it would be wrong to give the wrong impression. It does have its limits.

Man never has enough time. Time is more precious than any other possession. A minute lost will never be recovered. Every moment should be put to its best use, as you perform worthwhile activities.

This might seems to contradict the other articles that describe the merits of waiting.

However, it doesn't.

Use your time wisely. Do what is needed in order to accomplish all that is necessary.

When it would be appreciated, wait for others, but without wasting your time.

You may choose to carry around a little recorder to record thoughts, memoirs, or articles while waiting for people or buses.

You may carry a list of things that need to be done when no other time is available.

Thus, you can have your cake and eat it too. You can gain someone's appreciation by waiting for them, but you do not have to waste your time while doing so. That would be the best of all worlds.

In this way, your waiting time can always be put to good use.

Will you be traveling? Plan to accomplish extra things in case you are stuck in a traffic jam or the bus comes late. Make a list of specific phone calls that could wait - but you could get them out of the way if you have extra time. Take along a recorder and dictate some optional business things that keep getting put off. Perhaps you can prepare an advance list of specific issues to plan or think about if you have extra time.

Multitask at your computer. Handle several things simultaneously. If you are at another computer terminal while "wasting" time, then get permission to go online and handle some of your own business, to manage some of your own websites, or to download some things that you don't have time to handle at home. Be sure to carry around a portable flash memory device at all times.

Of course, you should handle work in a different program while downloading large files. That extra download time can add up.

There are other ideas for spending your time wisely:

Your own list can be bigger than this, based upon your own needs. Just make sure that you always carry around something to do in the event that you have some spare time. It's worth the extra bulk and weight.

You will be amazed at the end at how much can be accomplished by utilizing your slack time, if you just prepare for it.

Where do you want to go now?
