Department of Gurmat Sangeet
Recognising the
teaching of Gurmat Sangeet as an independent academic discipline under the
Faculty of Art & Culture, Punjabi University happens to be the first University in the
World, which has started the Department of Gurmat Sangeet. Initially 10 seats were allotted
for the newly started M.A. in Gurmat Sangeet course. Taking into consideration the enthusiasm among the students, the
number of
seats in this course were increased to 20. Jathedar Akal Takhat Sahib, Singh
Sahib Giani Joginder Singh Vedanti, while inaugurating this course termed
it as a mega event in the field of Music as well as Sikh History at
International level. He also congratulated Punjabi University, especially its Vice-Chancellor Swarn Singh Boparai for this initiative.
In this
Post-graduate course of Gurmat Sangeet, students are being taught all Ragas in
different singing styles contained in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. Raga-based
different Kirtan Chaukis and Kirtan Maryada is also taught. In
addition to providing exhaustive study relating to Sikh religious principles and
practical training of Gurmat Sangeet, workshops on communication skills in
English are also held to meet the requirements at the global level.
For Research
relating to Gurmat Sangeet at Ph.D. level, a Research Journal is also published.
Reference books, text books on Classical Music, Persian Classical Music,
Hindustani Music, Sufi Music, Folk Music & Indian Tradition of Kirtan are
also made available to the students. Monographs, Biographical sketches of
Kirtankar gallery is also maintained. The Department of Gurmat Sangeet is also
preparing documentary films on renowned Kirtankaras.
Holding of Gurmat Sangeet Workshops
and Annual Sangeet conferences are some of the other regular features of the
department. In the recent past, department has initiated the following
programs and projects on Gurmat Sangeet.:
Rabab Revival Program :A Rabab workshop was organised by department of Gurmat Sangeet, Punjabi University, Patiala. This workshop was inaugurated by S. Swarn Singh Boparai. On the valedictory day renowned Sikh Scholar bhai Ashok Singh ji Bagrian was the Chief Guiest. Speaking on this occasion bhai Saheb, while, congratulating the efforts of Punjabi University for the revival of vanishing forms of traditional music said that the efforts of Punjabi University would be written in the history in golden words. He said Punjabi University deserves great applaud for its endeavour in this field.
Revival of String Instruments : Dr. Gurnam Singh, Professor & Head, Department
of Gurmat Sangeet stated that Maharani Perneet
Kaur, MP has donated Rs. 5 Lacs during the establishment of Gurmat Sangeet
Chair. Department has purchased these instruments with the help of grant issued
by the honorable M.P. so that this eloping tradition of Gurmat Sangeet could be
revived.
