THEME :A Virtual Pet Store

BROAD CONCEPT: Competition i.e to compete with other pet stores it is necessary to know what the consumer likes,wants, and needs..

GRADES:3rd – 6th

INTEGRATED SUBJECTS: Language Arts, Mathematics, Technology, and Music

UNIT GOALS AND PURPOSE:
Goal 1

Students discover what to do to determine peoples’ likes and wants.

Goal 2

Students will learn to use technology to do research, record data, and interpret data.

Purpose

By trying to answer the question, “What animals would we offer for sale in our virtual pet store?”Students will understand that surveying and polling people is one way to ascertain a good representation of peoples’ likes, wants, and needs.They will also determine that various statistics are available on the WWW.

Evaluation

Students will work in groups of three to develop a virtual pet store.They will incorporate their understanding of collecting data by using the data to make decisions on the types of pets to sell(see rubric included at end).

STUDENT ACTIVITIES WHICH WILL PROMOTE ENGAGED LEARNING: 
Day 1

Activity 1

Anticipatory set:If we were going to open a pet store, how would we know which kinds of animals to sell?

Students will brainstorm until they come to the conclusion that a survey or poll could be taken.

The class will list their favorite pet on the chalkboard.They will determine that it is difficult to ascertain what the most popular pet is by viewing all the information written.

The students will be prompted to explain a better way to show the results of the class poll.

The students will view a teacher made KidPix slideshow explaining how to tally information to enter it onto a graph.
 

 

Day 2, 3 & 4

Activity 2

Working in groups of three, student will decide on a group of at least 30 people to survey for their favorite pet.They can survey people by using e-mail, telephones, or personal questionnaires.

Data will be tallied, and entered into a spreadsheet program (Cruncher).The data will be used to create a bar graph.

Students will compare their results with those at  http://healthypet.com/Survey/index.html item #5.

Evaluation:

If their results were different, they will try to explain why.Discuss why the results of the survey at healthypet.com might be a better representation of the most popular pet. 
 

 

 Day 5

Activity 3

Results of each group will be displayed on the T.V./Monitor.All results will be entered on the spreadsheet program.A graph will be create to represent the data.

Evaluation: 

If the results of all the groups’ data is different than their individual group’s data, students will be asked to explain why by writing a short detailed explanation.Explanation should include that a larger sample sometimes reveals different and more reliable results.

Day 6

Activity 4

Students will decide how to display the results of their survey to the rest of the school (school newspaper, hallway bulletin board, etc.).

 
 
 
 

Day 7, 8, 9, & 10

Activity 5

Students will use HyperStudio to create a virtual pet store.

They will research on-line pet stores to decide what products to sell and what prices to charge.

Activity 6

Students will sign on to the Children’s Book Chat to discuss possible book titles to stock.

Students will use the results of their surveys to determine what animals and how many of each to stock.

Day 11

Activity 8

The class will discuss what advertisers do to let people know about their business.

Working in groups of four, students will make up a jingle that describes the types of animals for sale in their pet store to the tune of “How much is that doggie in the window?”

Students will perform their song for the class.The class will vote on the song to use to advertise their virtual pet store.

Evaluation:

They will make a graph using graphing paper to record the results of the vote.

Day 12

 

Activity 9

Students will use a projector to present their virtual pet store to parents visiting during “Open House”.
