BROAD CONCEPT: Different types of Transportation (and their uses)
GRADES: Kindergarten
INTEGRATED SUBJECTS: Mathematics, Technology, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Physical Education
UNIT GOALS AND PURPOSE: Students
will have an understanding of the six different types of transportation
available. Students will also have an understanding of what each mode of
transportation is used for through videos, pictures, and the Internet and art
projects. The assessment for this unit will be ongoing and performance
based. I plan to use my classroom observations to evaluate their
understanding of the units’ concepts.
TIME FRAME:
10 days one activity per day
OBJECTIVES:
In this lesson, students will:

STUDENT ACTIVITIES WHICH WILL PROMOTE ENGAGED LEARNING:
Activity 1: (Math) The teacher will start the class off by letting the students know they will be starting a unit on transportation. With the help of Mrs. Tucci’s 4th grade class and the use of the computer lab, the students will complete a 22 question online survey from the website called Transportation Choices Survey. http://www.marc.org/enviroment.airquality/letkidslead.htm. The results of the survey will be graphed onto excel in Microsoft word.
Activity 2: (Language
Arts) The teacher will lead a discussion by making a KWL chart (what
we Know, what we Want to learn, what we have Learned) using the Inspiration
program. This chart will be used every day of the unit as knowledge of the
different modes of transportation increases. Questions the students have about
the different types of transportation will also be added. A printout of
this chart will hang in the hallway. The teacher will then read the online
storybook of Thomas the Tank Engine to set the stage for learning.
Activity 3:
(Physical Education) The students will
watch the video movie, Cars, Planes, Trucks and Trains. If the students
have any questions about the type of vehicles they saw or didn’t see, the
teacher will check for understanding. After the movie the students will
learn the action poem, How Do I Get From Here to There?” using body movements
and music. Room mom helpers will videotape the students dancing and
singing to the new song they have just learned.
Activity 4: (Math) Have each of the students bring in five different magazine pictures of transportation. The teacher will graph the results according to the different model types, such as planes, trains and automobiles and trucks. The mode of transportations that is dominant in the graph (ex. 15 planes, 10 cars, 2 trains, 7 trucks) will be drawn on construction paper and displayed in the hallway.
Activity 5: (Social Studies) Using Kid Pix Deluxe 3, the student will design their own driver’s license. Information on the driver’s license could include: My Name is ____________. My birthday is_________. I am a girl/boy (circle one.) My hair color is__________. My weight is___________. My height is ___________. After this activity is completed, the students will move to the computer lab to visit the student websites listed on the last page of this document. Each of these websites offers a vast amount of information on the unit of transportation.
Activity 6: (Math) The teacher will show the students a gallon container fill with water. She will ask the students how may miles they think a car can go on a gallon of gas. The teacher will record the students answers on paper. The students will then move to the library, to use the software, Encarta, to find the right answer.
Activity 7: (Math) The students and
the teacher will create a timeline on chart paper of the evolution of the car.
The students and the teacher will use Microsoft word to re- create a timeline
which represents the evolution of the car and how it has changed in many ways
over the last 100 years.
Activity 8: (Math) With the help of Mrs. Tucci’s4th grade class, the students will use Kid Pix Deluxe 3, to draw and label two word math problems such as, two cars were in the parking lot, two more cars joined them, how many cars were there all together? If five boats were in the harbor and one boat left how many boats would still be there? The student will then print out their work and glue it against construction paper to hang out in the hallway.
Activity 9: (Social Studies) The teacher
will introduce the guessing game called, “What vehicle would I use?”
She will describe a situation to the children requiring the use of a vehicle.
She will ask them, what vehicle they might pick for the job and why. She
will provide models for the children to consider. The student will then go to
the front of the class and tell why he picked that vehilce for that job.
Again a room mom will be video taping this.
Activity 10: (Social Studies) Using Mrs. Tucci’s 4th grade class as helpers, the students will use Desktop Publishing to design a brochure on their favorite way to travel. Their pictures should be detailed and easy to read. A few short sentences about why they picked this mode of transportation should accompany this brochure. The students will print them out and hang them in the hallway.
SHARE YOUR IDEAS:
The students will share their work in several ways: We will be working closely with the other two kindergarten classes. The work that the students do will be displayed in the hallway for the other grades to see. The teacher will make copies of all of the graphs made and completed as well as copies of the online survey as examples to analyze in their own graphing skills units. A virtual tour of a transportation museum will be the culminating experience. In addition a party will be planned for the parents to come in and view the 10 days of work completed by their child.

STUDENT AND TEACHER ROLES:
The teacher’s role in this unit is
to be guiding influence for the students. Questions will be answered by
redirecting the student to keep them on the right track without giving them the
answer. With the help from the two other teachers and their classrooms’
as well as the room parents, this experience will be educational as well as fun.
The student will be the active participant to his or her own learning. The
student is responsible to stay on task, bring in the assigned assignments and
share with other what they have learned.
