Identify the Colour
Go for a short walk, and once you’re somewhere fairly dark (street lit is fine) produce some coloured pieces of paper or card (or anything, really!) which are clearly numbered.  Get the girls to identify what colours they are – it’s a lot harder than they probably think!

Darkness drawing
Do this one in the dark.  Give each girl an index card (easier to write on without support) and a crayon. Peel the colour name labels off. Then ask the girls to draw a square in the middle of the card, a circle in a top corner and then a triangle on top of the square. Then they should write down the colour of the crayon they are using. When you get back see how mis-shapen the drawings of a house and the sun are, and how far off the colour guesses were!

Rafts

Try making mini-rafts big enough to take a night light candle, and float them in the stream, paddling pool or pond, or in a large dixie or baby bath.

Darkness wide games

There are loads of wide games which can be played in the dark.  Here’s one to start you off:
Have a large candle in the middle of your field or other outdoor area.  Secretly give half of the girls a red counter (or bit of paper or whatever) and the other half a yellow one (or use some other way to secretly divide them into 2 teams).  The red team has to put out the candle, the yellow team has to stop it being put out – but they’re not allowed to hang around near the candle.  If it’s warm you could provide the girls with water pistols!

Zap
Played after dark (usually without any torches) with carefully specified boundaries!  Two girls have torches (off) -they are "it". Other girls hide while "its" count to 50. "Its" then walk around in the dark to find girls. If they find someone they ZAP them (by flicking on their flashlight). Once ZAPPED the girl then takes the flashlight (now off) and she becomes "it" and continues to look for other girls. Meanwhile the girl that had been "it" has a chance to hide.
