Games Mora (Italy) "Mora" means finger in Italian. This is an old game which is very popular. Two players face each other and count in Italian, "Uno, duo, tre" and then shout out numbers between 0 and 10 (this could be in English). At the same time they throw out any number of fingers on one hand. The player who accurately guesses the total number of fingers is the winner. All After (Ireland) Needs at least 5 people. One person is "off" and all the others who are "on" count to ten. They then chase the person who is off. The person who catches the person who is "Off" is then "off". Donkey (Ireland) This is a ball game. All the players stand in a circle and throw the ball to one another. If you drop the ball you are now "D" and if you drop it a second time you are "O" and so on until you are "DONKEY" when you have dropped the ball six times. If you are "Donkey" you have to act like a Donkey! Korebe (Turkey) The game is played by about 5 to 10 children. At the beginning of the game, one person is chosen to be it, and then the eyes of that kid are covered with a kind of blindfold. When the game starts, the person who is it--the blindfolded person--tries to catch the other kids. If someone is caught, that child becomes the new it, and the game starts over. Nascondino (Hide-and-Seek, from Italy) With a counting-out rhyme, one girl is selected to be the "seeker". Keeping her eyes closed, she then will count for a number, which should be equal to the number of all the players multiplied by ten plus one. Meanwhile, the other players must hide somewhere. When the "seeker" has finished counting, she must go and seek the hidden players. As soon as the "seeker" can see a hidden girl, she must run to the "lair" and call out her name and the place where the player is hidden. The hidden player must run and touch the lair before the "seeker" can touch it. The first child who has been discovered will become, in turn, the "seeker". If another hidden child can touch the "lair" before the seeker, it will be "free lair for everyone" and the seeker for the next round of the game will be the same as before. Alleyway A board game from eastern Europe, found on my unit website here. Crafts Wood carving In Scandinavia they make intricately carved wooden ornaments. Try your hand at carving or whittling wood. For a small project find a stick about 1 or 2 cm thick and 10 or 15 cm long, and whittle a spoon using a pen knife. Make sure girls know how to use the knife safely first! Snow globes Much of northern Europe has a lot of snow. Make snowstorms as gifts or ornaments. Instructions here. Flowers The Netherlands is famous for its bulb fields. Try making paper flowers, like tulips or daffodils. Or if you can get hold of some real flowers try your hand at flower arranging (never pick flowers from public areas, and only from gardens with permission). Instructions for paper daffodils and roses at http://www.oocities.org/hgc2b/contents.html . Swedish Doves Make paper doves to make into a mobile. Cut out dove / bird shapes from thin white card. Cut a small vertical slit in the top of it’s back, and feed through a “fan” of white paper. Fan out the “wings”, draw on a face, then make a few more. Hang from a coathanger or some straight pieces of wire to make a mobile. Food Swiss fondue You need for each person 1 square chocolate 2.5mls (half a teaspoon) cream small silver tray ( eg. individual pie dish) teaspoon cocktail stick 2 pieces of fruit or marshmallows tea light or small candle Wooden clothes peg And for each small group: chopping board matches Method 1 light candle 2 clip peg on to silver tray to form" pan" 3 put choc in silver tray and hold low over candle to melt choc whilst stirring 4 when melted stir in cream 5 spear marshmallow or fruit with cocktail stick and dip into choc/cream mix 6 eat 7 repeat until no fruit/marshmallows left 8 eat rest of fondue with spoon Bread and cheese There are many famous European cheeses – why not try some with French baguettes. You could drink blackcurrant juice from wine glasses with it! Pizza (Italy) Make mini pizzas. Either find a recipe, or make bread roll pizzas: Take half of a round (burger) roll, spread it with some ketchup, add toppings of your choice and some grated cheese and eat. If you use veggie toppings or cooked meats you don’t even need to cook them if you don’t want to. If you prefer them hot, just put them under a hot grill for about 5-10 minutes. Dutch alphabet biscuits (with marzipan) and Russian potato cakes and little pancakes are on my unit site here. Also check out the French guides' site for French recipes. Other activities Pioneering In northern European countries when scouts and guides go to camp they make elaborate furniture from long wooden poles and ropes. Try some mini-pioneering with garden canes and string, or skewers/ cocktail sticks and thread. Can you make a table? An impressive gateway? A bridge to cross a river?? Keeping Guiding alive In some countries in the past, Guiding was suppressed for political reasons and Guides had to hide their uniforms etc. What six items would you choose to hide to keep the Guiding spirit alive and why? Build the Leaning Tower of Pisa Materials: Toothpicks or cocktail sticks and lots of miniature marshmallows The Leaning Tower is one of the three parts which make up the Cathedral of Pisa. it was built over 700 years ago and today it leans over more than four meters. Divide into two teams, give each team a supply of toothpicks and marshmallows and challenge them to build the Leaning Tower of Pisa. See which group can build the tallest, skinniest and the one which leans over the most without actually falling over. Countries Members of the Europe region are: Armenia Austria Belarus Belgium Cyprus Czech Republic Denmark Estonia Finland France Georgia Germany Greece Hungary Iceland Ireland Israel Italy Latvia Liechtenstein Luxembourg Malta Monaco Netherlands Norway Poland Portugal Romania Russian Federation San Marino Slovak Republic Slovenia Spain Sweden Switzerland Turkey Ukraine United Kingdom Europe Links Many of the European scouting/guiding organisations have their own web pages. These can all be found from the WAGGGS page at http://www.wagggsworld.org/aroundtheworld/regions/eurolist.html. Some of them have information aimed specifically at foreigners like us, for example Austria: http://www.ppoe.at/bereiche/int/ France: http://www.guidesdefrance.asso.fr/ (click on the Union flag for information in English) Don't forget that many European countries have more than one association. |
