Tuscaloosa'a Eastern Bypass numbered
AL 297
(May 2005)
The Paul W. "Bear" Bryant Bridge was opened to much fanfare in 2004. Sen. Richard Shelby, who is credited with obtaining much of the highway funding for the bridge, did not make it. But a platform of politicians and dignitaries gave speech after speech.

The above photo shows a newly installed state highway sign on the northbound onramp from Jack Warner Parkway. So far, the bridge is all that exists of the Eastern Bypass, AL 297. The next stage, which will cross Crescent Ridge Road between
Holt and Alberta City, has been surveyed but the numerous homes and stands of pines between the two points have yet to be touched.
